Article on Pflugrad

Please Board of Regents...give RE a letter of recommendation and show HIM the door. He has ruined people's lives and the reputation of the University based on overreacting to unsubstantiated and inflated accusations. That is NOT leadership.

The University of Montana deserves better!

Instead of writing this here write to the BOR. Let them know your concerns.

Back on topic here.....

I have one more piece of "inside info" that was not disclosed that I know of.

I was told that after the firings of Phlu and O'day, eh hem, "change of leadership direction," Royce called all of the remaining coaches into a meeting. With a smirk on his face, he said, "So, which one of you wants to be the new head coach?"

Unbelievable if true...

Which raises the issue of whether a "change in leadership" was really the goal. Why the hell would you turn to the current staff for a change in leadership? That's all that's been done to date both for the AD and the head coach, who may as well have been in the room given that he'd been on Pflu's staff for two years and Hauck's before that and had only really left the program for a few weeks.

Whether Engstrom was smirking, stammering or drooling is irrelevant. His actions to date have caused a lot of damage and no measurable benefit. Those in the public who support Engstrom assume that getting rid of Pflugrad and O'Day -- and I could add another to that list, but I won't-- was the necessary lancing of a festering boil. Somewhere way way down the road, it's all going to be better. And if we can't see that, well as Pat Williams put it, "Many people have a love affair with their team, particularly their football team.... the public has trouble intellectualizing because they have this love affair."

As this goes on, with no real improvement in sight and every additional step made by the administration, seemingly making matters worse, it seems that RE is the one with trouble intellectualizing. You have trouble intellectualizing when all you're trying to do is throw people under the bus to CYA.

Oh Geez guys... do you have "evidence" of this smirk?

No proof, just hearsay from one of the coaches in the room. Does the smirk really matter? He could have said it with a stone cold face, but that still doesn't detract from the lack of professionalism. This goes along with the hearsay that RE fired Phlu and O'day together as well.

Maybe he was just trying to lighten the mood, making the best of a crappy situation. Maybe he was sick to his stomach for having to fire them. Who knows? What if there are some really bad things that come to light in the investigations... things that the head coach and AD knew about?

Shocking...

Nope. These firings were completely unjustifiable. There is no damning information looming behind the reports of the NCAA. Pflugrad was essentially fired for no reason, I know that is really hard for Bobcat fans to grasp. If this body in the closet is revealed, than I'm wrong. But I'm not wrong. Pflugrad was fired for NO REASON.

You Bobcat fans are trying really hard to justify RE's actions but you are failing miserably. There was no grounds for dismissal at all. None.

Engstrom is a moron and needs to go. His clueless line is that we needed "new leadership." Yet he then hires a new head coach from within the system and a new AD from within the system. Seriously, how fn dumb is he??

The problem is that, while you may be completely right, UM didn't need a reason, grounds or justification. That's the downside of these employment contracts. Once they're over, all bets are off.

Griz fans can bitch, moan, speculate, complain, threaten, cajole, indict, dream up conspiracies, withdraw financial support, call the Board of Regents, call Gwen Florio, e-mail Engstrom, and launch investigations, but none of that's gonna bring back Robin.

...which sucks, because I liked him.

My reply, which has gone without answer:

Brint Wahlberg: Thank you for the reply Missoulian Newspaper. I missed those articles where you've interviewed Robin Pflugrad and Jim O'Day after their termination and got their side of the story. In fact I missed pretty much any article/opinion piece that looks at the side of the story like this reporter has. I don't recall much press from the Missoulian pointing out the alleged gang rapes by athletes were investigated and didn't result in charges. Was there a Missoulian article on all of the discipline measures that Pflugrad put in place like this article reports? This was the first I'd read also that Engstrom wrote Pflugrad a letter of recommendation as well. That's three things I count which are not "opinion" but are rarely reported/if reported at all.

They've always been a joke of a paper. They could really make a name for themselves with a big story like this right in their back yard. But apparently they are too lazy or just don't care about the truth. People got shafted on this deal BIG TIME and it is the solemn duty of a newspaper to expose it.

FYI: According to the Missoulian they contacted The Oregonian yesterday seeking permission to run Goe's article and were refused...

Now whatever will they do? It's too bad they don't know any kind of organization that could, you know, WRITE THEIR OWN FUCKING STORY!!!!!!!!

I know. The thing is it would be easier to accept if this sort of thing was normal protocal when firing coaches. Problem is, I have yet to find one other case, in the history of college athletics, where a coach is fired and no explanation is given to the coach or to the public. This firing was unprecedented

The other way to look at this article is that yet another nationally recognized publication has written an article in which the University of Montana and its president end up looking like clueless hicks.
You have a Pulitzer prize winning newspaper call to speak to your president, who doesn't make himself available. So, you send out your journalism school dean who offers nothing resembling truth or integrity.
if you're the Oregonian, you can't be too impressed, nor can recruits in the pacific northwest, or any potential coaches, or any of the region's schools.
Well done, Royce.
