Article on Griz Signee

It might be a little early to anoint any recruit as a starter next year. We aren't exactly hurting with a lineup that would have Will at the point, Kareem at 2, Art at 3, Derek at 4 and Billy R at the post. I don't think that Stockton, Autry, Ward and Wood aren't just going to sit down either.

That being said I am excited about the new recruits and their abilities. However before I spend much time in thought on that group I am looking forward with much anticipation to the successful conclusion of this season and hopefully see the Griz not only make an appearance in the NCAA tournament but to make a solid statement there.

I to am excited about our signees this year. No doubt they will add to our perimeter game, athleticism, and depth. They both should contribute, but GRIZ 1 is 100% right about our returnees. Billy Reader is raw, but should be a good offensive post and rebounder. Selvig will be Selvig, but more intense next year. Kareem and Art both deserve to start as well. What more needs to be said about Cherry? Amazing.

Autry is about to burst out. By the looks of our recent rotation. I am guessing Autry is very close to becoming this year's guard. I have a feeling his minutes will go up this weekend on the road. I also feel he will impress us more as this year progresses. He will not be willing to concede minutes that easily. Stockton will again be the calming influence, yet being a SR next year. He too will not sacrifice his minutes either.

Unless we lose a few more players than Qvale, It is very possible 1 of the 2 new recruits will Redshirt.

Hell Yeah!!!! Love his perimeter shot. GJ, what have you observed of Weisner so far? Would it be possible to get some video of his shooting in practice, and maybe a GJ interview to get to know future GRIZ contributors? Maybe after the season is over for us to look forward next year. I am thinking this season will not end until mid march. :thumb:
 
I plan/hope to get mini-profiles/interviews of all players within the next three weeks, starting with Steward last week, Stockton tonight (or tomorrow a.m.).

Some logistics are involved, so I don't know the order or specifics yet.
 
Jamar is quick enough to play the 2 and has a good outside shot. I personally would love to see Jamar start at the 2 and Steward at the 3. Not that Stockton has done anything to take him out of the starting lineup. He's been very solid for the Griz starting at the 2, and always busts his ass out there. No lack of heart there that's for sure. If it does end up Jamar starting at the 2 and Stockton coming off the bench again, I'm sure he'll get a ton of minutes still. He's been a nice surprise for us Griz fans since he started getting quality minutes and seemed to gain a lot of confidence out there.

Steward has been great since he started getting more minutes. He's always in the right place at the right time, keeps moving getting himself open for easy buckets, can take his guy off the dribble, and is a great rebounder. We now have a 3 in Steward who is a very good all around player both defensively and offensively. I really hope he will continue to start & get the type of minutes he's getting now.
 
Only time will tell. A lot can happen over one off season. Beyond Selvig and Cherry, I am not 100% sure who will play where or how much. If the newbies do well in preseason, there will be very little need to move Steward or Jamar to SG. Both Steward and Jamar are capable of playing 2 guard, if needed.

A few years ago, I would 100% agree 2 signees such as this would have a very good chance of starting rather early in their careers. Tinkle and his staff have recruited well, and doing a great job developing players, since he has had all his own players. The GRIZ program is to the point where it is getting deeper every year. The depth would be even more prevalent this year, if not for injuries.

Things are very competitive for playing time now, and next year will be no different. BTW, in case you have not noticed Tinkle demands defense, and great defense now. Great scoring alone will not get you playing time any longer.

Vaughn Autry, like most Freshman has taken time to adjust to the college game. Meanwhile Jamar was the exception to that, not the norm. In case you have not notice, the only Freshman Tinkle threw into the fire early, and quite often was Brian Qvale. Even with Qvale, he had to cut back his playing time when he was heading on a downward slide. Keep in mind, Tinkle brought Cherry on gradually, but by conference play, Cherry had proven himself to become a huge contributor. Cherry was not handed playing time. He had to earn it, and once he did Tinkle stuck with him.

Unless one of these Freshman are extremely talented and ahead of the curve, I expect Tinkle to continue managing promising talent the same way. He has become pretty consistent in that.

By the way, I have no problem putting my read on GRIZ basketball against you. For the most part, I am pretty accurate on GRIZ Basketball. By the way, I actually look forward to GRIZ players proving me wrong, or exceeding my expectations of them. When they do, I have no problem admitting it either.

I am sure any Egrizzer GRIZ basketball fan respects my GRIZ opinion much more than yours. I am not perfect when it comes to the GRIZ, but do feel in my time on EGRIZ, I have earned a good majority of EGRIZZERS respect when it comes to GRIZ basketball. Feel free to chime in. AS for DUB or whatever your other screen names are, you are the top egriz idiot. Even then, you do have your good moments.
 
I know it's easy to think Dub is going off on you at times, but his last post seemed pretty reasonable, rule. That's just my read.

Anyway, I wouldn't count Ward out so early as either the starter at the 5 next year or at least big minutes at the 4 while giving selvig a break. I think he and Reader will get most of the Post minutes over Hutch. I love Reader's aggressiveness around the basket.
 
You have proven my point Peaux. The fact we are having a discussion on this regarding depth with varying opinions show how much talent and depth Tinkle has put together. Believe me, I am again high on our recruits. I do love it when a new recruit makes an early impact. With everyone returning at guard, the competition will be fierce for playing time.

It is hard for any Freshman on a good team to get significant minutes. Even more difficult when the following are part of the equation.
(1) An all conference/honorable mention all american type player (Cherry) at one guard.
(2) A rock solid, relentless, smart, aggressive, defender,and leader at another Guard (Stockton).
(3) Another young talented swing guard with a high ceililng, and experience under his belt (Autry)
(4) A versatile bigger guard/forward combo that plays solid defense, rebounds, with a high ceiling (Jamar)
(5) An athletic, rebounding, defender, do it all, which will be a SR (Steward)
(6) A player Tinkle has seen a lot of promise in, that may find his shot again (Wood)
(7) Earning playing time requires great defensive consistency from this coaching staff. Most Freshman are not ready that quickly defensively to contribute that much right away.

I am referring to perimeter players only. All these players are proving themselves to Tinkle this year, and will only be better next year. As talented as Henderson and Gregory are, they will have an uphill battle to see significant early playing time. Then again, they may be well ahead of the curve, like Jamar. If that is the case, I will be elated as any GRIZ fan. That would mean one or both are extremely talented if they were to get major minutes as freshman.

I am just being realistic here, and believe me, hope they exceed my expectations for them next year.
 
I would like to see Tinks play Jamar at the 2 this season, and leave Steward in at the 3. Whenever Stockton needs a breather, and see how that lineup does, or start playing Autry more. I am very close to being done seeing Wood take away minutes from the others at the 2 spot!!!
