Are the Cats becoming a dominant program?

They only had 10K at their first playoff of game in 4 years. Not a dominating sign....

Towson had ~2,100 by comparison.

Wofford 2,100

SE Missouri 5,700

James Madison 7,300

Nichols 8,500

Northern Iowa 4,00

JMU and UNI are both more traditionally powerful programs than Montana State, so I'd say the attendance argument is a dud.

When you combine the nasty weather and being Thanksgiving weekend with students gone and Bridger Bowl being open, the crowd was pretty good. Lots of out of town people did not show due to the bad roads.

I would venture to guess that most of Saturday’s attendees were from “out of town.” Along with 40,000 of their brethren in the Gallatin Valley.

I agree, it was a pretty good crowd for a Bobcat game.

The naysayers simply haven't done their homework... All of the elements that portend an ascending program are in place in the Gallatin Valley. First off, a stable institution with an outstanding president who understands the public profile importance of winning football bringing in a bright new coach when a change was indicated. Waded Cruzado was also key to cutting in half the time frame for expanding new end zone seating. And unlike the cowtown of my undergrad days Bozeman today is the fastest growing city in the state.

Looking at the demographics of the metro area with its high per cent of aggressive entrepreneurs, big ag folks and high salaried workforce one might reasonably conclude that increasing dollars will be headed to supporting athletics - namely football. They have a state-of-the-art airport (the busiest in MT) that further facilitates recruiting efforts. Contrary to one poster's comment Montana is more than capable of supporting two premier programs. Fan support is cranking for Cat supporters who will soon be seeing major upgrades to Bobcat Stadium including replacing and expanding NE sideline seating. Their AD is also talking of plans for construction of an indoor practice facility

Unfortunately virtually every check mark attributed to MSU is currently lacking in Missoula. Hopefully, given time, Bodnar will right the ship but this is going to be a long slog in playing catch up with a sister institution that is already arguably in the lead. Wish it weren't so - but the evidence is hard to refute.
Hard-bitten Cat haters are going to find increasingly little solace in butting heads with reality. :coffee:

Spot on. Are the Cats becoming a dominant program? Who knows, but they're sure not dominant yet, not even in the Big Sky conference. I just hope Choate & Gregorak stick around. Bobby too.

Cats vs Griz since 2010, interesting.

Wins: MSU 5 (2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, 2018); UM 3 (2013, 2014, 2015)

BSC champs: MSU 3 (2010, 2011, 2012); UM 0

Playoffs: MSU 5 (2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2018); UM 3 (2013, 2014, 2015)

Just curious, but what does this have to do with them being "a dominant program"?

No, and I don't think the Cats, or anyone else in the FCS will ever be a "dominant" program ever again. At least not to level that the NDSU dynasty has been. But then that was not the goal Choate set out to accomplish. He's always said his one and only goal is to build a "Championship" program. Yes, I believe the Cats are on the way to becoming a championship program.

I see you conveniently left out 2011 like it didn’t happen. We all saw what happened that year. I don’t blame cats fans for trying to pretend it didn’t. So that skews the info you just typed.

We are FAR away from being a dominant team. But like many fans I’m at least optimistic about our direction. But a dominant team wouldn’t need to win 4 straight to sneak in the playoffs.

Hopefully in the coming years we’ll have the look of a dominant team and that starts by dominating our own conference. Not there yet...

As a Cats fan, I'm not going to consider MSU on the road to dominance until they can find a QB who is a QB and put their stud RB/LB where he belongs.

No. Needed some last second luck to beat an absolutely middle of the road griz team this year. Are they getting better? Yes. But they are still not back to where they were during the middle of the ash years when they legitimately had the best team that they’ve fielded in the last 2 decades. Next season I expect both Montana and Montana state will be on the rise.

We wouldn’t even be having this conversation if it weren’t for a fumble on the one yard line. msu surely didn’t dominate UM and lost to all the competition it played that were at the top of the conference. Including ISU. Are NDSU and Alabama dominant? Yes. Are msu and um mediocre? Yes.
Spin it anyway you must but the fact is both Montana schools have a long way to go become “dominant “ and the only thing going for msu is they are beating um.
