Appy State under the lights

FCS-FBS TRANSITION AT A GLANCE
• On March 27, 2013, Appalachian State University announced that it would join the Sun
Belt Conference on July 1, 2014.
• With the move to the Sun Belt, Appalachian State football will transition to college
football’s highest level, the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS — formerly
known as Division I-A).
• Appalachian State football must complete a two-year reclassification process from FCS
to FBS. Among other requirements, Appalachian State must raise the number of football
scholarships it offers from 63 to 85 during the reclassification period.
• In the first year of the reclassification process (2013), Appalachian State will play a
full Southern Conference schedule but will be ineligible for participation in the NCAA
Division I Football Championship. Appalachian will also be ineligible to officially win the
Southern Conference title, as the league would forfeit its automatic berth in the Division
I Football Championship if its champion were ineligible to participate in the postseason.
• In the second year of the reclassification process (2014), Appalachian State will play a
full Sun Belt Conference schedule and be eligible to win the Sun Belt championship but
will not be eligible to participate in a postseason bowl game.
• Appalachian State becomes bowl-eligible in 2015

So could we call this our first FBS win?

So could we call this our first FBS win?

No, but you could call it one of our last FCS wins.
We will just be FCS transitional this year.
All we did was give scholarships to walk-ons that we already had.
We accepted FBS for next year way after recruiting time passed this year.
One transfer, but they are sitting out this year - they have to do so.
So basically and actually we are just an FCS team this year.
But if you win, I would probably say that, even though not really true.

Could we have some very early season snow for the second half again?
That was nice. Believe that game is still the highest viewed FCS game ever.

I want you guys to go FBS eventually and bring MSU, let's form an FBS conference if we have to
or join the same one. Would be great to be in a national FBS conference with the Griz.

Glad it's going to be a night game. Last years opening game, 400 people had to get medical attention
at East Carolina noon kickoff, because ECU wanted it on national TV. Never want us to allow that to happen again.

Idaho is FBS Independent this year, after being in the WAC, and are scheduled to be in the Sun Belt next year for football only. Believe the rest of their sports are BSC next year. Am I wrong?
(So tempted to write U-da-ho, but will not.)

No, you're right. Idaho was to us as GSU is to you. We tend to give 'em a little crap on this board.

70, are you making the trip to Missoula?

Wish I was, but have an operation scheduled for a couple of days before then. Would move it up, but they are making me wait. Probably would not anyway because it just about killed me to walk a mile or so to Kidd Brewer Stadium last September. EMS came to see me as soon as I limped into the stadium. I'm old, but not as old as I sound. Just a lot of medical junk.
I'll be there in spirit though. Then will follow you guys like I do every year right after my Mountaineers.
Hope for a safe game with no injuries with both teams discovering plenty of offense and defense.

Funny. App State is the only team outside of a few other BSC teams that I have on my sports ticker.... :thumb:

Believe the fan nations of both teams kind of formed a bond in a way years ago. Was kind of us both being at the top or near the top almost continuously. We also both held off the barbs of the Northern schools and others that liked to poke sticks at the bears. Neither fan base brags way too much when they win, or harps on and on about losing. Both being kind of rural and situated in the mountains also played into seeing a lot of our teams in the other. Being so distant from each other probably helped in that we wouldn't get to play each other much. Just my thoughts on why I have followed the Griz.

Appalachian State - my second favorite FCS team - about to become my favorite FBS team.

Good luck on your upcoming season - except for the epic clash in MSO!

Finally went ahead and got my flight out there and booked my hotel, the campus inn. Nice to see its a close walking distance to the stadium. What are the tailgate rules in missoula? Really pumped for this game, and can't wait to see Washington-Griz in person.

You are only allowed to shoot a man if he too is carrying a sidearm..

And, what's ours is yours.
