APPY state in talks to join CUSA

PR,

It seems to me that many of the things on your list are not necessarily advantages or disadvantages, but rather reasons for potentially not making the move.

And FWIW, I understand those reasons, and many are compelling even for me. But they ARE reasons, not disadvantages. I think anyone looking objectively would conclude that Montana is positioned just as well (and perhaps better) than App.

I view most of my list as reasons and/or advantages for App St to move up. Generally, UM doesn't have the same reasons or advantages. App St's location close to large populations, good recruiting areas, and opponents to play, give App St considerable advantages.

Well thats it for Appalachian State football.

Even in on of the lowest FBS conferences they will start getting owned every game. Fans used to winning most if not all their games will give up and the the stadium will be 95% empty come game day.

Its not even possible for an FCS team to move up and be successful. We all know Boise was one in a million and hell since thats already done the odds are now 0 in a million.

RIP Appy state football!

And then their fans will go on a witch hunt for the school president for making this stupid decision! :D :D

I have a lot of respect for Appalachian State and figure the program will join a new conference within the next year or so, but I also wanted to share a quip from the Sideline Chatter section of the online Seattle Times about Florida International switching from the Sun Belt to Conference USA

• Greg Cote of The Miami Herald, on Florida International switching from the Sun Belt to Conference USA in 2013: "If this were a poker hand, it made the leap from a pair of twos to a pair of threes."

That about sums it up OTG. The conference they will "move up" to is about as relevant as the conference they are in (kind of our situation).

The big boys are going to stake out their turf soon. We won't be in that mix and despite the chagrin of their fans Boise won't be either. When it settles we can move up to where we fit and compete with similar institutions in football. Jumping for jumpings sake is asinine at this point.

Eventually we will end up at the same level as Appy and hope we can continue the "rivalry".

Well good for Appy I am happy for them really. As many have mentioned or believe the upper end FCS and lower end FBS schools will eventually be in the same league. I can and would like to see that. When will that take place, who knows?

I think if UM would have went to the WAC there is a good chance we could be sitting with UI and NMSU outside looking in, however the Griz might have gotten that offer from the MWC as well. I think If both Montana schools where to have been invited in the WAC I certain both MT schools would have been offered by MWC to join. By adding both MT. Schools they would have brought in the entire football watching community of MT. I am aware the population in MT is just at or just surpassed the the million population point. Will everyone of those people watch football, no they will not but a good majority of them will.

At this point this is all moot as the Griz are where they are. I am starting to wonder if O'Day and Pflu maybe have been fired for other reasons. Let's face it O'Day let it be know in his move up letter that he saw big changes coming in college sports and pushed for it. It is also my understanding that Robin was a fan of the FBS setup as well. Could there be a chance that O'Day and Robin had knowledge of some of the most recent conference changes that took place and felt we really were going to miss the boat so to speak and brought it up AGAIN to Engstrom? Could Enggy looked at it as a challenge to his grand decisions to stay in the BSC so Enggy got rid of them? Enggy did make a comment that he felt a different direction was needed so he decided not to renew contracts with O'Day and Pflu.

I think the whole dam things smells from top to bottom. Enggy made the best decisions all around for him self plain and simple. I just wonder who's paying him paying him above and beyond his normal salary!

Blast away ass clowns!!

Interesting... I see a lot of parallels between our situation & App State's situation.
Wish I did.

Well, for instance...

Missoula's small population, but large surrounding fan base vs Boone's tiny population, but large surrounding fan base

Both are THE premier FCS powerhouses

It seems like the only thing stopping us from moving up is the lack of money earned by the football program being put back into it.

It is no more money than it is lack of vision and the motivation to grow...

Just read that George Mason turned down the A10 and is staying in the CAA.

Wouldn't that have just been a sideways move?

D1 to D1.
Indeed, but the A10 is a better basketball conference than the CAA, so it was half up and sideways move?

Looks like there are about 4 FBS conferences available for east coast FCS teams to move up. There is currently only 1 out west and it's filling up quickly. There is simply more teams and available conferences out east.

Yes and if the Griz were to move to the WAC wouldn't that also be a sideways move?

D1 to D1?

One of my gripes on this board are the posters who don't recognize that the Griz are CURRENTLY playing Div I football. They are.
