With 320+ teams shooting for the NCAA tourney, its not such a bad thing to have a third tournament. Bringing up any other sport and talking about them haveing another set of playoffs doesnt hold water because other sports dont have 320+ teams. Zags are going to win the WCC or get an at large so are you guys so against this?

The education of Swilly continues:

Actually, saying that bringing up another sport holds no water for the reasons you've cited holds no water. Other sports do not have 97 teams in the "playoffs". Real numbers are unimportant. Percentages are what to look at:

NCAA BB: 320 teams; 113 make the postseason this year.
That's about 35%

FCS: 116 teams (right?); 16 make the playoffs.
That's 13.7%

Just because there are more teams doesn't necessarily mean that less make the postseason. If the FCS were to DOUBLE its post season participation, it still would not be close to the percentage of teams in the NCAA BB postseason.

So, making these kinds of comparisons not only holds water, it can lead to a better understanding of what's really going on.

Apparently, someone has to educate the educator. First, the real number is 122; however, only 109 actually participate in the playoffs. Further, 6 teams are still transitioning to FCS. Thus, the real number drops to 103. Finally, do you know how many of these teams are non-scholarship or offer reduced scholarships? By comparison, how many basketball teams do the Griz play that offer reduced or no scholarships?

By comparison, 53.7% of FBS teams go to the post season.

What a joke, I would think a Griz fan would know a marginal amount about the FCS playoffs after 15 straight playoff appearances.

I'm 98% sure you must be being sarcastic but if not:

1) I wasn't entirley sure of the exact number which is why there is a "?" after it in my post.
2) Thanks for giving me the real number, but even if it were 100, the % of teams making the post season could still double without reaching that of NCAA BB.
3) Not sure what scholarships have to do with calculating the % of teams that participate in the post season in a given sport.
4) FBS has no relevance; they don't play a tournament/playoff. Can't think of why you woul have brought this up (which is why I think you were being sarcastic)

A third tourney is just silly, IMHO. Pretty soon it'll be just like all the FBS bowl games -- if you finish at .500 or above, you get to be in a bowl/post-season tournament. Well, whoop-te-do.

3) Scholarships have everything to do with it. Let me ask you a question.... what happens to a 11-0 San Diego team? Uh, they stay home for the playoffs. You know as well as I do that only ~80 teams have a realistic shot at the playoffs.
4) No relevance? According to whom? Who cares what type of format we're talking about? Is there really a difference between a 6-5 North Texas football team going to a bowl game and a 18 win NAU team? IMO, this gives more BSC teams the opportunity to extend their season and prepare for next year.

Didn't know that not giveng scholarships means that you can't play the postseason. Still, even if its only 80, only 20% make it.

FBS is its own animal; I think you'll agree that it is not structured like every other sport in every other division. This is why I don't think it should be used as a basis of comparison.

Anyway, thanks for letting me know that only 80 teams in the FCS can make the playoffs. Seriously, I did not know...
