It's coming for sure, and it is going to be crazy

However, the most impactful benefit of this new model is a framework in which schools can directly compensate athletes through a trust fund. Schools within the new subdivision will be required to distribute to athletes thousands of dollars in additional educationally related funds without limitation.

There is no cap on the amount of funds that a program can provide an athlete.

It is perhaps the single-most revolutionary concept introduced by a sitting NCAA leader in college athletics history.

“It kick-starts a long-overdue conversation among the membership that focuses on the differences that exist between schools, conferences and divisions and how to create more permissive and flexible rules across the NCAA that put student-athletes first,” Baker writes in the letter. “Colleges and universities need to be more flexible, and the NCAA needs to be more flexible, too.”

Everyone knows this is coming. Hopefully there is a path forward for the G5/higher level FCS teams to combine for a fun subdivision with their own playoff, probably not likely but would sure be fun to compete with the Sun belt and MWC teams (or what remains after raided by the corpse of the Pac12) for a championship. Snowbelt Conference!!

It just makes no sense that G5 would be the ONLY level of football that does NOT have a playoff...but doing it with bowl games does NOT excite me. The huge draw of the playoffs is HOME games, IMHO.

The Bowl system is already on life support, I don't see it lasting much longer and frankly I welcome this idea:

-Top 72 Teams break off (P4)
-G5 and Top FCS merge
Remaining FCS and top D2 Merge

Each level would have their own playoff system, could also return to the old way of classification: 1A, 1AA, 1AAA

This :thumb:

UM would add teams like Utah State, Wyoming, Colorado State, Nevada, UNLV, WSU, etc... Count me in

Have thought this is where it would end up for years. My only nit would be if the pay for play goes ballistic the P4 would end up with more like 40 teams, don't think 72 will be able to shell out, say 30 million a year in player compensation. It would dial back my enjoyment of big boy college football in either case to an NFL level, a level that means fun to put a few bucks on a 3 game parlay. Would be great for the Griz to compete at the top non pro level though.

Here’s the entirety of NCAA President Charlie Baker’s letter outlining his proposal for player compensation and other “fundamental changes” to the operating framework. In addition to the compensation recommendations that have been well-publicized, Baker points out that “across Division I, schools spend between $5M and $250M annually on their athletics programs. 59 Division I schools spend over $100M annually on their athletics programs. Another 32 Division I schools spend over $50M annually on their athletics programs. An additional 259 Division I schools spend less than $50M, and of those, 144 Division I schools spend less than $25M on their athletics programs.” Comparatively, Baker points out that 98% of DII and DIII schools spend less than $20M annually.
