Another missed opportunity for UM

Most of UM's marketing is going out of state and is paying off in a substantial increase in those applications (in-state are up as well). Local universities fighting over resident students is just plain silly. While in the short term it may help a particular institution it is even out over time. Frankly the BOR has the same number of dollars to spend whether it goes to the MSU side or the UM side really doesn't matter. There isn't a problem unless net enrollment decreases which it hasn't) Its all a matter of simple economics.

If a Unit president wants to impress the BOR, he will do 2 things lower the amount of Institutional support to athletics and increase the number of out of state enrollees. Next year I suspect UM's enrollment will be down again despite a higher number of new students but soley based on their 3600 graduates this years as opposed to MSU's 2,048. (A number that matters) MSU may have succeeded in bringing students back but they seem to be flunking out the second time around.

I am all for bashing our marketing because I do think they need to do a better job, but seriously, a home show in Butte on Mother's Day is "another missed opportunity??"

There was a gem and quilting show somewhere too I am sure the University should have been handing brochures out at.

Hey, hold on there, if graduation rate is an important metric, you can't recruit... well... quilters.

Well since MSU is kicking our ass at enrollment these past few years, I'd say it's time to make an effort. Anywhere the Cat goes, the Griz should be in the lead. And a several hundred people per hour all weekend is probably a big enough venue to matter. Where have you seen a UM information booth lately? Besides in Missoula?

I remember the 1990s management trend 'management by walking around' (MBWA). I suppose it was inevitable that our highly advanced connected society should transition in the 2010s to MBMB (management by message boards).

The real metric is employment. It seems to me we had close to 100% of our offensive line seniors get employment in the NFL. As a percentage in fact with the number of folks getting drafted from this years team, we had a higher percentage of folks employed in "their field" than most degree programs...............

How are the other schools in the state doing????

There seems to be no desire to market their product. They believe they are entitled to enrollment. They are in denial that running a university is like running a business. Spoiled idealists; times are changing and they are not changing with it.

UM is keeping some of its marketing powder try, because they are still working on a paid ad/endorsement from Al Gore--to promote UM's dominant global climate change and environmental/conservation programs.
Plus they are the point of the spear in the war on women. Don't forget that on Mother's Day

Just curious how much new scientific discovery and and knowledge is being cataloged by these efforts. Also curious if these programs are sponsored by the political science bureau under the purview of science.

Doesn't the UM have a Computer Sciences program? I can tell you well trained CS grads are in very high demand. Maybe not in Montana but here in Portland they are starting at $60K to $70K+ (for the really good ones) which is pretty good for a first job.

Yes, UM, MSU and Tech have computer science. But, surprisingly, they are not producing many grads. See below and linked article, especially the chart in the link. High-paying jobs, even in MT. $45,000 to $85,000 for starting salaries.

"Mr. Gianforte pointed out there will be 400 computer science job openings this year, but only 40 computer science graduates from Montana universities (see graphic below)."

God, I remember my first job! Her name was Sherry and I was 14.

We were just young and restless and bored
