Another GRIZ experience

smaller venue versus the BIG boys...

it is what it is, the biggest show in Montana, the Big Sky and for pure passion it holds it own with any of them. Loud is reletive and loud by our perspective certainly works here. USC, Bama and their moneyed programs do have a lot of passion but person for person, it is hard for any of them to match with our fans when fully 'ginned up' on a UM football Saturday.

OUr stadium confines works well and as one poster noted, puts most fans literally on top of the game day action. The design and location of Wa Griz certainly does not hurt the volume either.

Bottom line it works for us and although we may not match the big boys decibel for decibel we are loud and proud and will continue to use our Griz roar to our advantage.

If the measure of a game day experience is the decibel level per person and the amount of liquored up folks, then I would concede that UM is tops ... if, however, it's a tradition of a great time held throughout the game day, into the stadium, throughout the game, passionate fans, great players, tradition etc, then there are many other places that far exceed what I experienced there. (My opinion so no need for personal attacks, "Snappy!"). I think it's great that the Big Sky has a place like UM. For the resources and the population base it's a gem. But my point is that it's easy to become very provincial in outlook when that's what you're used to experiencing and become so full of yourself that you don't realize that there is more out there that is equal to or better than what you know. It doesn't make what you have less when you acknowledge that there is a big world outside of Montana.

It should make you proud when you go out, see what there and that you measure up favorably (if you wonder why people shake their heads as an earlier poster noted, when you insist that what you have is always the best, it's because they are pitying you for your lack of objectivity and willingness to be open to any other view).

I would hope that you get a chance to experience a place like Kyle Field (Texas A&M) and their 12th man tradition ... for a college atmosphere that is the standard to aspire to and it has little to do with the decible level (though it's considerable) or the number of people there and everything to do with how it's done (even seeing a telecast of the game does not give a whit of how much fun it is and how challenging it is to play there).

I know this is going to come across as "preaching" and Lord knows none of you want to hear that from (gasp) a woman and non-Montanan, but go someplace other than your usual gameday experience (preferably in a totally different region of the country) and embrace the entire experience. Don't compare it with what you're used to but just enjoy it and talk with folks. Immerse yourself in the whole scene.... Some of those experiences will be better than your usual and some will not compare as favorably, but the end result is that it will only make your life richer and hopefully you will be more willing to acknowlege that there are really good things out in the big wide world and not have this childish reflex to insist that only your fan experience is the best.

You may be have a point in your own humble opinion but the next time you go to WA Griz for a game, maybe try to do the same...?? ;)

I've been in numerous "big time" stadiums and have never experienced the passion and love for your team from every damn person in the stadium as there is at WA Griz!. What can I say?? I just love the Griz and the game day experience!!

I've yet to see the above bolded "feeling" more beautifully displayed than it was at the ASU/Griz semi-final playoff game in 2009!

That particular evening was beyond magic!!

Too bad there is no measurement for the crowd effecting the opposing offense to jump offside in critical situations. Especially in north end. Griz win that one hands down!!!

Amen brother! It was both cold and loud and was as a good a game as I can imagine ever seeing. It was a privilege to be there. I think it's about time for my mid-summer replay.

What makes you believe that I didn't? I'm beginning to think that how the Griz fan is judging the fan experience and my value are different. Yes, noise and love of team are a given to rank high on the meter but there has to be traditions and pageantry that makes the entire experience, well, an experience. Monty and little Monty cavorting around the field not withstanding.

I do believe that WA-Griz is an outstanding venue. It's the giant Montana sized "we're better than any other venue, professional or college, large small, new or established (louder, more passionate, more football savvy, etc)" assertions that makes me continue to express my doubts. With little impact or persuasion, I might add.

I will take the SEC out of the equation, being never to one of their venues, but would love to go. KC Chiefs, and Nebraska games were the only ones that even compared to a GRIZ playoff environment, both of which were better.

I hate to be too strong a critic but when compared to the USC games in LaLa Land, UM fades...when the white horse takes the field does the run around the arena, 95,000 people go nuts..when the band leader marches toward the other team's bench and sticks the Trojan sword into the ground, they grow louder and then the team comes on and the band never stops nor do the cheerleaders and students..Now, That is impressive. for its size, UM does great, but being loud and drunk is not the same as being enthusiastic...[/quote]

Really??? I was in la la land several years ago for an USC - Notre Dame game. Sell out crowd, close game. While USC's traditions were pretty damn cool, the atmoshpere was no where near Grizzville. In fact, the ND fans, who were well out numbered, were much louder than the USC fans. On an asside, I had to fly out of missoula the morning after the Appy playoff game. I sat in front of two App. fans who could not stop talking about the game day atmosphere. They both agreed it was far better than their own and both agreed it was much louder than Michigan's (they attended the game when App upset Mich.)

Get off it sister!

I’m not sure why you would continue to write on this subject on a Griz board. Of course we are a bunch of homers. The girls never looked prettier and the beer tastes better at Wa-Griz. This is a given for us. It's a little like going on a go army msg board and saying you guys are ok but there are better armies out there. You're NOT going to enlighten us here.

Does your life lack excitement (see also Eagles message board) and you have to come on here to create an argument? I'm all for freedom of speech but what do you expect on a u of m msg. board? Do you imagine that you will change any of our minds? Your continued posts on this subject are acts of futility. Mind your own garden, girl! Do we want to compare it with game day in Cheney? I would hope that all college football venues could match the excitement of Griz football for their fans. For me it’s the greatest sport played. You guys have come a long way and I hope your facility improvements and fan support continue. It makes for a stronger conference and a better atmosphere for all. I just don’t understand why you would continue to post on this subject on this board. Go to AGS or another source if you want to bellyache about the Griz game day experience or how other schools have better traditions. If your goal is to straighten those Griz fans out it is falling on deaf ears and destined to fail.

I encourage you to continue to post on other subjects on this board but continually telling us our game day experience is lacking sounds like sour grapes to me.

Hope you're having a happy 4th!

Go Griz!

I am going to comment on this topic. Posters know that I am not a Griz homer, and will give an objective opinion, without wearing maroon-colored glasses. I think that I can provide a very objective opinion, too, as I have been to SEC football games at Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, and The Swamp. I also attended a Florida/Georgia game in Jacksonville.

I have also been to Big Ten games at Ohio State, Michigan, and Wisconsin. I have attended football games at Arizona State, Stanford, and USC.

Washington/Griz stadium is CONSISTENTLY louder than any other venue. I would say that I have only personally seen two other games that were as loud and crazy, and they were the Georgia/Florida game, and the LSU/Auburn game in Baton Rouge.

Go Griz!

I'm not your sister and I'm not a girl (anymore than you are a boy). Truth be told I got tired of reading all those topics about RE and JJ and other crappy off season stuff on your site so I figured this would be the easiest way to get you Grizzers all fired up. Looks like I was pretty successful ... If you go back and read what I wrote there is nothing about straightening out Griz fans or that your experience is lacking ... Just that it's comical that you can't acknowledge anyone else that has a great game experience (some of them every bit as meaningful to their fans and often seeped in a longer more storied tradition).

And you're encouragement to post on any other topic is more of the condescending response that I've come to expect on your board from the likes of Snap and AG1, just couched in nicer terms. Unless you're mods plan on banning me for expressing opinions, I guess I'll post where I want and about what I please. That's pretty much what today's all about and as a 90% disabled retired vet I figure I earned that right for myself and you too.

HannahO. If you were my chick you'd have tasted a backhand long ago...

just kidding. Happy 4th. Just finished smoking a pork tenderloin...what do you want on your sammy?

Well, if it isn't Snappy ... little man that called me a hag earlier and now thinks he could have backhanded me if I were his chick. Here's a pic of me at age 28 and I wasn't a hag then and, though I might be older, I'm not one now. More importantly, you and your hillbilly attitude would never have stood a chance!

Happy 4th! Grilled ribeyes and pork steaks (no sammys for me, sonny).

Here's a pic of me at age 28 and I wasn't a hag then and, though I might be older, I'm not one now. More importantly, you and your hillbilly attitude would never have stood a chance!

Happy 4th! Grilled ribeyes and pork steaks (no sammys for me, sonny).

Such a cute boy.

PT in August at Fort Bragg, NC; short hair is the only way to go but I didn't run into any problems with that issue among the men there. I guess I can see, given the reputation Montana men have for sexual confusion, (sheep, boys, women? It can be sooo confusing) why you might be befuddled, poor thing.

I havent read this entire thread but.........is that a picture of your son? I bet he gets picked on a lot in middle school and that is sad considering the internal fight hes obviously having with his sexuality and all.

Hope you had a good 4th!

Sorry, I like my women to look like women. Not have a flat chest and a boys haircut. But hey if you want to brag about it on eGriz then go right ahead.
