Bob Petersen writes frequently to the MIssoulian on political issues. He is one of those people who believes that everything he wants should be free, and paid for by someone else. And he believes that is a moral principle.

I think there is actually an issue buried in Bob's rant. The issue is that Grizzly football is becoming less attainable. Ticket prices are very high for this level of football, wasn't it $59 bucks for homecoming? They seem to go up every year. The University does have control over ticket prices. Also, the decision, not the made by the University, to put Big Sky football on Root reduces the availability of the broadcast into homes in Montana. I know it increases the exposure in homes overall, but it reduces the exposure in Montana.

I am not sure if this is affecting attendance or not, but I have no doubt people are being priced out of attending and viewing. I feel like I am one. I had a free weekend over homecoming, but $59 bucks for a ticket plus the costs of traveling to town, and I decided to watch it at a bar. This is the first year I can remember in a long time I haven't watched all the games on TV because I have to go to bar now, and that gets pricy compared to watching it at home. I'm not complaining, I'm sure I'll still make a game this year, I am just pointing the issue out.

It is not on Basic TV. My parents in Missoula have the basic Dish package and the Griz games are not on. However, the cat game was on. So does Root only show the games they think will get the best rating? Well now that we are out of the top 25 for the last 2 weeks maybe they will show more cat games.

Exactly. Last year I could watch the games from home, essentially for free. Now, I have to go to a bar, where I feel obligated to purchase something or I have to get cable. I can afford $24 once a week. That's not my point. My point is that it is less attainable. The games are becoming more expensive and are available in fewer homes in the State of Montana. That is not arguable. I think this is something the Athletic Department should be considering. The programs exposure in the State of Montana is shrinking! I am not saying this is a sinking ship, but you got to see the big picture. I don't know what the actions are, there might be very little or none needed at all . But hey, if I was in a leadership role in the AD, this would definitely be on my radar.
On the positive side, the Roots Sports deal is definitely putting Grizzly Football in more homes region wide, so that is a huge opportunity.

Not really - there is a free or cheap way to watch the game - go down to the local sports bar - at least now it doesn't take a NASA tech to get the game on TV. It has only been a few years that streaming has been available, and at the beginning you had to pay for streaming access, but the quality was so bad they dropped the fee. Having the game on ROOT sports reaches many, many, times more alumni than it ever would for people who streamed through their computer, or tuned in a satellite. I guarantee for more alumni were watching last weeks game on ROOT sports than will watch this week through a computer. Yes it might change the way you get your access, but it is much more available now than it ever was. For those OTA people, remember than more and more of the games were being switched to CW which also wasn't available in all parts of Montana without a cable assist.

For the guy whose Dad with Dish that got the MSU game on ROOT Sports but not the Montana game I have no idea how that can work, you have the channel or you don't. Was it a weekend when MSU was on the local network?

I agree that charging for the online radio coverage was a terrible decision, and I would encourage you to addresses that issue early and often with Kent an his department, as that needs to change in light of the games not being streamed.

One other note, Iowa: any donation to the UM Foundation can be restricted for whatever purpose you support. You simply need to indicate that with your donation.

Ummm...it costs $8 a month to buy the radio feed on-line. Where I live that is less that 2 gallons of diesel or about the price of a 6-pack. Think of it this way, $8 a month divided by 4 games = $2 a game.

While paying to access a free radio broadcast is an option and it does get you EVERY game,you can generally access the other schools streaming site and get it for free (which is what we did for App state) some of these geniuses fail to recognize not EVERY game is available on Roots and that there will be even FEWER in future years. (nor is it always convenient to go to a bar or take the family to the bar with you)

The athletic department has most certainly done an admirable job chasing every dollar (I still think the ads for DUI lawyers above the Urinals in WG are a kick) There is a point however where that starts to turn off fans and effect the general atmosphere and support. (Id like to fire an RPG at the scoreboard every time the jimmy john thing comes on.)

This TV contract is one of them - although I don't miss hermes.....
