Andy Martin / Bryden Boehning

I was going to put "vs.", but no serious bone to pick here. Just wanting people's opinions about pro's and con's of these 2 players, and why Martin was let go but Boehning is still here. To me, Martin appeared a little more naturally quick and coordinated. Boehning often seems a couple of movements behind. Hoping that he'll catch up with the speed of the game over time, of course, but I remember Andy Martin getting some pretty good love from the announcers playing against Davidson a couple of years ago.

Well maybe I am a little wistful, but still I'd love to see Boehning succeed. I grew up outside of Glendive - always love to see people from that area do well!

Boehning looked good last night. He is big and strong. He's hard to push around. I liked how he played. In fact, I was impressed and a bit surprised. Guess I had never seen him much. He's better and further along than I had assumed. I think he's going to develop into a nice contributor this year, and has nice potential for the future.

I think it boils down to there was multiple years of college tape on Andy and Bryden had not set foot on campus.

I spoke to today to a big UM hoops supporter, who also played college basketball. He was very high on Boehning, and saw alot of good things in his play last night.

No, he's just finishing up school now. From what he's said though, he's really happy with where he's at now. :thumb:

I see Andy at the campus food service from time to time and he seems to be doing well; buckled down on school, still living in the dorms I gather. Liked to see him on the team and always thought he had a lot of potential, but he is a stoic kind of personality, and probably lacks the "killer instinct" to play hard ball. I think Wayne had high hopes for Andy -- "you can't teach height" -- and was trying hard to mentor Andy into a more active center. Travis didn't have the relationship, or perhaps the patience, and so when Wayne left, that was that.

Without getting into too much from a couple of conversations I've had in particular the love for the game just wasn't really there anymore. That would be why there was no transfer. He's just been a normal student ready to make a life for himself and if that's what he feels is best for him I don't blame him at all.

That's true. It's easy to assume that when you are 7' tall, you MUST live for Basketball, what else could there be? Easy to forget that collegiate sports are demanding, and sometimes you just lose the thrill, and want to focus on studies. I did a Title IX paper a number of years ago for presentation at a coaching seminar at UC Berkeley, and found doing the research that among females that is particularly true. In High School, girls participate at about 90% of the level of boys. In college it drops off to about 10%; women just want to focus on a whole different set of priorities. No reason why guys shouldn't want to refocus as well.
