must be a terrible drug and alcohol scene going on at AHS... to start programs with punitive measures rather than preventive :twocents:

Whitefish HS is considering it too, yet I don't think anyone is saying they have a terrible drug and alcohol "scene".

right... which is why this is interesting

I'm all for students who participate in extracurriculars getting drug tested. At my high school even the Theater kids got tested. The school paid for a company to come in on Monday's and test at random (getting tested on a Monday allowed for the test to detect traces of alcohol in your system as well). I was probably tested four or five times in 4 years.

I dunno, when I was growing up, having a severe punishment out there was very preventative. I must be a bad parent, because I still raise my kids that way.

yeah... I grew up when punishment could be doled out by my parents... not the case these days

I agree 100% but we (I) did do stuff our parents didn't need to know about. :thumb:

Whitefish board gives preliminary approval to drug testing
Posted on June 11

WHITEFISH - The Whitefish School Board has given preliminary approval to a drug testing program for the district.

The board voted 4-3 Monday to set up a voluntary drug testing program for students who participate in extracurricular activities. Students who don't agree to the voluntary drug testing program would fall under the district's current policy that already sets consequences for drug and alcohol use.

The board also gave preliminary approval to a suspicion-based testing policy for the entire student body.

Board chairman David Fern says the school hasn't had the tools to deal with students who are suspected of using drugs or alcohol. He says under the new policy, the student's parents and/or police would be called and the student would be tested.

The second reading of the policies is scheduled for the July 8 board meeting.
