If I have to go with someone that I've seen it would be the mining city boy...Jay Fagan. As I get older I give more recognition and appreciation to the road graders of the football world. :butt: Nothing like an "o" line man that piss pounds, and denigrates his opposition all f.....g day!!! It would be nice to see the Griz impose their will on people again this year. :egriz:

Not a back pick Rimrock. A few years ahead of me as a Bulldog and a very good player. Was not cocky or arrogant - just like a miner. Grabbed his lunch pale, headed into the mine with his pick and helmet. Got the job done everyday - all day. I hope our line grinds people this year as well!!

"Impose our will". A Bobby Hauck quote (who is also a Butte boy, kinda)

As far as Butte guys who played for the Griz, I'd have to go with Lance Allen. Good guy and a funny son of a bitch (not to mention a great ass).

I played football and baseball with Lance in Butte, and I can back you up on the fact that he is a good guy and funny. BHS class of 1989!!! :phat:

I know this is football. But favorite griz would be basketball stud Gary Kane. Just because when he was asked what frat he belong to, he said,"Frats are for pussies and f@#$."

I played basketball with Gary in Butte. He was a STUD player (Gatorade Player of the Year) and real likeable. BHS class of 1989!!! :woo:

I am biased because I grew up with him but I go with Todd Ericson. Love Lance, Chad Lembke, Kyle Mirich, Paul LeProwse, Paffhausen but my vote is with Todd. Known Gary Kane all my life as well, great bunch of guys to grow up with.

putter, you are 100% correct in my book my friend. Having grown up in Butte with all these guys and yourself, I can say that all these guys were talented and tough sobs, but Ericson was clearly the most athletic in my eyes. He was the QB, but was brought in on defense on obvious 3rd down passing plays to play free safety (putting your best athletes on the field). He was the point guard on the 22-1 basketball team our senior year. He was a college All-American at FS for the Griz, and had a chance with the Indy Colts... Lembke and LeProwse were baddass linebackers though... Love Lance Allen, Kyle Mirich and Josh Paffhausen too.

I like the colors in this shot of Colt better:

...and yeah, he was great fun to watch. Our current safeties have a lot to live up to (and that's not even taking all the other Griz greats at the position into consideration: Stein, Hauck, McElmurry, Schillinger, Huntsberger....).

I'd throw in Trey Young, from Helix HS in there as a a former Griz great at safety. He was a game-changer, and had a nice CFL career.

Jay Fagan, now that's a name I haven't heard in a very long time. When I was in grade school, he dated my best friends older sister, a Butte High Cheerleader. My friend lived just 2 blocks from me, so I saw them a lot. If I remember right, Jay wasn't the most recruited kid in the world, I believe (I could certainly be wrong) he was a late bloomer as far as becoming a high school standout in football. What I remember was that he was a really hard-working kid that turned himself into a great player for the Griz and had a nice stint in the NFL with the Redskins. I believe he and his wife Terri still live in the DC area?

Bob O'Billovich

Another old school great Griz from Butte was Mick Dennehy.

As a safety on the Grizzlies' football team from 1971 to 1972, Dennehy earned first-team all-Big Sky Conference honors in 1972. He is tied for second in single-season Big Sky history with 10 interceptions in 1972, while leading the league that year, as well. Dennehy is tied for ninth in league history with 16 career interceptions.

Had a great season as Griz head coach in 1996 as well...

Drum roll... My favorite Butte Griz of all-time is All-American Halfback Eso Naranche.

Naranche represented the Univ of Montana in the 1942 Shriners East-West Grid Classic, on the West team.

After his college football career, he joined the armed forces as an army Lt., and was killed by machine-gunning from an enemy plane near Bizerte, North Africa in the spring of 1943.

Click on this link to see a pretty cool football program guide from 1939. Eso was young, but he was still featured as "Montanas Mighty Terror" on third screen down.

The most important game ever played between the two schools (UM and state) took place on

Oct. 25,1941. War was on the minds of everyone with Pearl Harbor just a few short months away. The program cover featured a soldier and said “To Our Boys’ in Arms.”

Montana State scored twice in the first half to take a 13-0 lead. It was the first time Montana State had scored in the series in nine years.

In the second half, former Butte High star Eso Naranche bought the Grizzlies back to victory. He rushed for two touchdowns as Montana won 23-13.

It was the final time Naranche ever played a game in his old hometown (the Griz/Cat games used to be played at Clark Park in Butte). Two years later, he was killed in Africa while serving his country during World War II.

Lembke was a beast and gets my vote. LeProwse knew no limits with pain and was a tough SOB. They are all good people and had that blue collar work ethic. Good recruiting years for the Griz with that crew. FTC

Lembke and LeProwse are the two toughest kids I knew growing up.

Lembke, in addition to being a Dick Butkus type linebacker in high school, was a golden gloves boxer and state place winner wrestler at 189 lbs. A major tough kid. He started for the Griz at linebacker as a true frosh! And later became an All-American.

Same thing with LeProwse, a major tough kid. He threw his body around for the Griz, he played through a lot of pain. I saw him after some of the Griz games, he earned my respect. We fans don't realize how much these student-athletes truely indure.
