EWU was good for the 10 or so years Cooper Kupp was there. Happy to see him graduate.
They were the best team in the conference for awhile once Bobby left to UNLV. Their offense was something else during this era. Not only Cooper Kupp they had Aaron Neary who would go on to play for the Los Angeles Rams and Jake Rodgers who would go on to play for the Denver Broncos on the offensive line and they had Kendrick Bourne at the other wide receiver position across from Kupp. Bourne is still playing in the NFL currently on the 49ers.EWU was definitely a dog fight during my college years at UM all the way until 2021. They had some incredible players during that 15 year span
I totally agree with your assessment of the red field and that long awaited win. Really happy the #6 made the move. Now maybe I'll have some favorite memories of EWU.Getting the monkey off our backs and finally winning on that ugly ass red field last season is one that comes to mind, solely because it was a relief to finally happen.
Maybe they're just trying to forget: https://gogriz.com/news/2004/9/17/UM_EWU_game_lodging_package_availableNot one person at QB Club, including the coach, people in the athletic department, or anyone in the Club has ever heard of the Governors Cup.
Loved watching this hilight tape. That 2011 squad was legit, lots of studs. Jonathan Smith was our OC that year and our offense was clicking all year with JJ at qb, too bad the season ended up the way it did, and all the bullshit that ensued !One of my favorites was 2011, when EWU had won the title the year before. The goal line stand at halftime is an underrated memory of mine of watching games at WA-Griz.
Totally worth the retina burnEven if watching the telecast was painful for the eyes.
The current team doesn't even know who Eastern is.
I would say Michael Wortham sure does! That’s not good considering the current team plays them on Saturday![]()
I've known that the EWU/Montana rivalry game was called "The Governor's Cup". And I've always thought that there needs to be a trophy for this game as well. How cool would it be to be an FCS program that has three rivalry trophies that it plays for? Not many FCS programs can say that.Weird. Never heard it called that, and where's the trophy btw??

Was at that game. Another great memoryOne of my favorites was 2011, when EWU had won the title the year before. The goal line stand at halftime is an underrated memory of mine of watching games at WA-Griz.
Yeah oddly my family members that attended EWooo seem to think there is a rivalry with UM. I am regularly reminding them there isn't, never has been, and we don't care about EWooo. This is not a rivalry from this side of the equation. They think its a rivalry, the university of montana grizzlies do not consider this a rivalry. Not one bit. Bobby shared a great interaction with Wortham from back in spring in qb club.
I never missed a home game from 1993 through 2015 to include the playoffs, to the point of my wife being induced early so I could make it to the UM/Idaho game. Last game I went to with my Grandfather before he passed was the McNeese play off game in December of 1994. Man I have spent a lifetime in that stadium and at that school. Was at that game. Another great memory
I recall some awesome games here, in Joe Albi in Spokane and in Cheney (pre and post red turf). Even a controversial often talked about finish in old Dornblaser.
Most teams have more than one rival. I consider EWU a rival. They've been tough in men's and women's hoops and those games (as well as the football games) usually have an edge that to me makes it a rivalry.
What's wrong with having rivals? Griz boosters seem to love this woeful conference we're a part of. Aren't Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Florida "rivals" with Alabama? And vice versa among all these schools and others?
Are Portland State, NAU, Weber, Northern Colorado, Cal Poly, or Utah Tech the UM "rivals"? Are MSU, Idaho or EWU?
That’s what the team does every week, ie learns about the opponent. It’s only Tuesday. All opponents treated the same. One game at a time. There is no rivalry with Eastern. Each opponent is respected and taken seriously. That’s not good considering the current team plays them on Saturday![]()
