AJ best closer in Griz history?

I am forming the opinion, for AJ to be successful, he has to have the ball more. With Will Cherry handling the ball more, AJ just doesn't seem to get into the game as well. But the way Will Cherry is progressing, we will be wondering if Will Cherry will be the best closer. But, it may also be, that Will Cherry will be the AJ of last year and look how last year ended.

Best clutch player would be Allen Nielson for my money. If there would have been a three point line he would have been even better. He was also a great rebounder and may have gone to the next level had he lived.

Hard to argue with this one. Too bad most of the Egrizzers never saw many of the great Griz hoopsters of the past. By the way, it is Allan, not Allen. Stew Morrill named his 2nd son Allan in his memory. Stew is married to Allan's former lady Vicki. :thumb:

I got to watch him in HS. Was a 2nd/3rd grader. My brother's '75 team, Peerless, beat #1 and unbeaten Westby in the semi's at the District 1C. Westby went on to a 1-loss Class C Championship. When AN went to UM is when I became a Griz fan. I was in Jr High when Doug Selvig signed w/ the Griz. Both those guys we fun to watch growing up. Some pretty damn good hoops up there "back in the day".

There was definitely some great ball back in the day. I'm not sure of the year, maybe 1977 with Jim Brandenburg as HC. We had an awesome team led by Sugar Ray and a tall skinny guy that could really sky by the name of Lee Johnson I believe. What a treat it was to watch that team! I think we were 11-1 and our loss was to a Kevin McHale led MN Golfer team at their place in a close one. Things then came to a screaching halt as it was discovered that Lee Johnson was scholastically inelligable to play. We endend up forfeiting our wins and were inelligible for the post season. Now that was a bummer! We packed the place every game. It was definitely the toughest ticket in town!

Great thread bringing back lots of memories of my days on campus! Thanks!

after tonights game i have to retract. AJ blew front end of 1-1 in waning minutes of a 1 or 2 possesion game. not his best night

Yep, in fact, he blew two front ends. We could have been up by 3 with 3 minutes left instead of down 1. That stings.

I appreciate that you fessed up to your mistake. I see that AJ in the Missoulian story on the game also expressed puzzlement over his lack of production. Not only has he stopped attacking on offense, but his free throw shooting is haywire.

At the rate he's going, I'm not sure he'll even make 2nd team all Big Sky.

Griz beat WSU in championship game in what well could be the greatest comeback and one man show in history of Big Sky Conference. AJ scores a tournament record 42 points, 34 in the second half to win the game for the Griz.

Just this game alone could rank AJ as best closer in Griz history.

forget best performance in big sky history. that was one of the best games I've seen by a college player I can remember.

After last nights unbelievable performance by AJ I think he just may have convinced me that he is the best closer in Griz history! I saw MRR do some amazing things on the court but nothing to compare to what AJ pulled off last night! Thanks for the show AJ. You are special.

Watching that game kinda brought me back to the SDSU/Griz 1st round football game. Unbelievable comeback!

GO GRIZ!!

GrizBBisking, I'm pretty sure Michael Ray was on the team that almost beat UCLA in the NCAAs.... Correct me if I'm wrong.

MR played 35 minutes, was 1-5 from the floor, 2 points, 4 assists.

Here's a clip of the game. You will see MR on the floor.

Until last night, I thought Eric Hays' game against UCLA was the greatest individual performance by a Griz hoopster on record... I know this was Weber St and not powerhouse UCLA, but yet, what AJ did was special... and as far as overall Griz history, this does rank up there with the South Dakota St. comebacks on the field. Can anyone else remember a "hoop" comeback from so far down in a "big" game by UM?

I am sure it is an impossibility to get a DVD of that Griz/UCLA game, but if anyone knows how to get one I would Love to have it!

Not Impossible. Go to www.ncaaondemand.com and do a search for Montana and Basketball at the same time. It should be the last option on the second page. It is pricey, however.
