Advertising fail ....again

Once again...one of the biggest griz games of the year....vs our rival....weber is in town. UM once again has failed to advertise. There won't be 4k tonight and maybe 50 students. The university should be appalled, two back to back championships and they can't advertise fr this team and get butts in the seats? Back in 06-08 I remember seeing almost a full area at week games and I remember seeing advertising and free ticket give aways, huge student promos. 2013 is so so so easy to advertise in and nobody at the UM does. What a joke. For all that read this, I hope you all come support this team tonight and support this team that has had ups and downs but is growing and can be a very fun team to watch. Its cold out....the Olympics suck....come watch the griz play first place weber state tonight!!!

I am sure expenses have been cut from advertising, promotions, etc in many different aspects of athletics. Finances are rough for the school of late. Also, this has been the case for the the majority of the last several years.

It is frustrating. I too hope it changes for the better. In the meantime, it would be great to hear some kind of reason why GRIZ basketball is not more promoted?

Its not about money. You realize 90% of advertising today is online. Facebook, Twitter, instagram. The UM does a horrible job with social media. Also ticket promos and radio advertising cost the UM .......guess it......zero dollars. The man labor it takes to take 20.sets of tickets to radio stations is very small. Free advertising and the UM is sleeping. I'm a fan of other universities who post and advertising with free advertising 10x what the griz do

I feel you have a legitimate point. I know Haslam appreciates feedback from GRIZ NATION. I have emailed him a few times on various issues, made suggestions, and voiced opinion. I took the time to word things professionally. Each time he responded or got the right people involved. Each time there was improvement in the areas I suggested improvements in. One was simple as a disappointed GRIZ fan. The other was a huge complaint about pregame and post game audio coverage as a paid member through gogriz.com. I honestly did not expect a solution, at the very least a quick change. All be damn, the next GRIZ game full Audio pre and post game. The GRIZ have been very good about it since then too.

Like O'Day, he too cares about how GRIZ NATION feel is quite open to suggestions, feedback, and constructive criticism. I am not sure which Egrizzers have addressed things with Kent. I can say he has impressed me the few times I've contacted him. Maybe others can add to this. The more feedback we get the more Kent has to work with. For the record, if you should choose to bring this to his attention, let me be the 1st Egrizzer to tell you, this has my support. Here is to hoping you can get more egrizzers/fans to get on board too. :thumb:

Additional marketing can be done, no doubt. But I've seen a handful of social media hits regarding this game, and I rarely use any form of social media. I know the UM Griz FB page has "GAMEDAY" splashed across it's home page.

At some point, I believe, we've got to stop blaming UM, and start blaming the people who don't show up for games. I presume they can all read a schedule.

Being a fan on pages of Washington university, unlv, duke. I literally see 6-7 duke posts about their football, basketball games on game days and one to two on non game days. I have right now 18 colleges who are promoting thier games this week and weekend on my facebook feed. 5 on instagram and a few more on twiter. I have seen 3 from UM this week. Which is getting the job completed but not really excelling. As a manager of a department or job im not happy with satisfactory work. Your either excelling or there is room to grow. The UM marketing and Advertising has a ton of "room to grow"

As I said, I view social media as a pain in my ass, so I'll defer to you on that.

But I guess I'd ask my question again a little differently: Should a university have to put out 15 FB messages about a game against Weber that's been scheduled for 9 months, just to get people aware of it? If it does -- if that's how they're going to fill the place -- then in my mind the issue is much larger than simply lack of marketing.

No the issue is griz bball was it was the only thing to do. Now ppl go to maulers games, watch Netflix, rent movies at home. There is much more to contend with now than ever. You can watch the game online..if you want. Even big university areas with 5x the population are working harder to get 10k to the area. So if Washington, unlv, Nevada, usc, cal all are doing this to make sure they are getting fans to the arena.....shouldn't we?

There has been plenty of press regarding the game this week in the Missoulian, as well as on TV sports. If people are not interested enuf to read the sports pages or watch local TV sportscasts, they probably are not interested in coming to the game anyway.

I think that's a bad attitude to have and why our fan base is so flaky. Only the diehards are welcome? What about the casual group that heard about their friends going on facebook or saw the UM talking about it so they decided to go? Most ppl under 40.don't get the paper or watch local news anymore. This ain't 1990.

We get it. More can be done. And we may even agree.

But you've got to realize that UM Athletics just doesn't have the resources that a Cal, a USC, a Washington or even a Nevada has. Shit, those schools probably have 3 times the number of interns that UM has full-time staff. Yes, they could probably market more. But there's an opportunity cost associated with it, even if there isn't a hard cash outlay.

I think they should have had fun with Wayne being named the Sexiest Basketball coach recently. Bring in the cougars, which bring in the men. Damn, that sounds just too damn simple! lol

Um athletic interns dont have enough to do. Trust me. Have written our AD actually a few days ago so we will see what his response is

I think this is a total cop out. The great and revolutionary thing about social media is that it costs next to nothing and you can get a ton of bang for you buck for promotional purposes. The athletic dept could hire a marketing or journalism intern (preferably someone with good writing skills) to do multi-platform social media writing for almost nothing. There is a reason these social media companies are valued at billions of dollars; they have the ability to reach millions of people with the click of a mouse. Any brand trying to legitimately market themselves these days strives to have a strong social media presence. The UM Athletic Department has done a piss poor job promoting the program online for years (which is another reason the budget cut excuse doesn't hold water), so its no surprise we are already way behind the times in our social media presence. Yet another example of the Engstrom administration dropping the ball. This is becoming an alarming trend.

Here is what they have on social media for the ISU game, this Saturday.

Sat is the tailgate....anyone know that already? No....well that's hard to plab for something you don't know about. $1 for hotdogs and chips and soda I believe and it starts at 5 I think. I would know of the UM was advertising it...but instead they invite 130 ppl to a event on facebook. Its Friday....people make plans for the weekend on friday. The UM should be blowing up Twitter, instagram and facebook promoting the game and the tailgate. Instead people won't know and go skiing or stay home or go to a movie or if the maulers are in town....see their giant promo in the center of town and go there.
