Does it come with a miniature cell phone?
Maybe there will be some Break Dance Fighting.

Funny thing about that movie, one of the models in it was named Brint.

I've always thought you looked like a male model.

Just how big is this going to be? Looks like a very small building...especially for 2.5 mil...

Is has a lower level for Adams center use as well. I'm trying to recall but prior numbers I've been told was in the 5000-6000 square foot range.
Yikes! I doubt there is a house within two miles of me that is smaller than that. What is wrong with the library at UM? Is a special study area for college kids truly necessary? What is the real purpose?

Having studied in the library as soon as 2 years ago I can tell you there's nowhere near enough room. Computers are almost always all taken, limited study areas for groups or with tutors, some bigger rooms but with poor to no wifi.

The student athlete academic lounge is no bigger than the common living room and has maybe 10 desks/computers in it for 300 student athletes. Putting something there will be helpful for those that need a convenient spot to study before or after practices or meetings.

Having studied in the library as recently as four weeks ago and throughout all of last semester, space is not an issue. And sure, the computers are in high demand, but I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for one.

Also, I've never heard of anyone not being able to find a quiet area to study in. Most people don't even look at the 4th or 5th floors.

I think the bigger issue would be talking directly with a tutor or having designated areas for athletes of certain sports. Personally, I think it's overpaying for what we're getting directly, but the bigger benefit will come from being able to boast about it (i.e. getting to brag to prospective athletes' parents).

Athletic study/academic centers have become necessary to compete for top recruits. The thought is that the athletes spend so much time in the athletic area, that it makes sense to have a dedicated study area there. That way if they have an hour between, say film study and practice, or lifting and therapy, they can study on site.

The current one is roughly half the size of my office and basically contains a handful of desks in a dungeon like room.

Here's the related newspaper article. Has some same and some different info, than what was in the press release posted above. I chuckled at a few of the quotes.

I think an academic center is a great addition for the student athletes, but I don't think it outweighs the need for an updated locker room and weight room. The library is only like a five minute walk from the Adams Center anyway.

The library is pretty much full at all times. There is often no chance for kids to get access to the computers after 10 a.m. Unless you're williung to sit around and watch until someone leaves. What college students have time to do that?

Many athletes also don't possess their own computers, laptops are tablets. Many come from situations where that is just not an option. The Student-Athlete Academic Center will provide more Academic Resources for these kids. The Student-Athletes deserve those resources. Anyone who thinks the Academic Center shouldn't have been a HIGH priority either A. Doesn't care about the Student part of Student-Athlete or B. Is very naive to what a lot of these kids that come to the UM DON'T have at their disposal.

Here is an article from last November that focuses on the improvements to dressing/locker rooms. Aside from help with recruiting and academics for athletes, these improvements will help Adams Center to host more events, such as concerts and high school tournaments. Hosting more events at the Adams Center should help improve the financials situation for the Adams Center, which ultimately should decrease the amount of support Athletics pays to the Adams Center.

I know first hand since I did not own a laptop when I attended UM until my junior year.

I never had an issue getting a computer or study room... there are always laptops available for checkout from the front desk.

Good grief. I went to the UM Library because it was warm and that's where the books were. I took my only technological tool with me, a Picket Slide Rule, for my Physics and Chem homework. Don't I feel ancient?

That is awesome. I heard that they were considering that when I was there, but wasn't around long enough to see it materialize.

The Montana Grizzlies Academic Center for Athletes Who Can't Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too

I don't wanna hear your excuses! The building has to be at least... three times bigger than this!
Maybe there's more to life than just being really really good at sports.

A Picket slide rule? Must be nice to be wealthy you pompous son of a bitch. I had to make due with a rusty old Blundell. In fact, I'm posting from it right now.

I tell you what, the Missoulian comments section sure does gain the attention of a lot of the knuckledraggers that read that paper. Good grief.

A bunch of curmudgeony old fucks.

I'm all for the Academic Center, and it's location. But, I still had to chuckle at these two statements:

When recruits and their parents come on campus, they'll see that not only do we talk about academics, but we put our money where our mouth is. We can show them the investment we're making in their education," he says.
.
.
.
The new facility, which provides space (and not to be overlooked: plenty of windows) not only for dozens of individuals at a time, but rooms for group study as well, comes at a cost of $2.5 million, all of which was privately raised.

Soooo...just to clarify. When he says "we put our money where our mouth is," he really means, "we put other people's money where our mouth is." Right?
