A WIN: Lots of shots in foot, though

I thought, during the game, that we'd win, but could we have shot ourselves in the foot more? MS was a pretty good team, as I thought they'd be.

I liked both QB's. Both can pass, and run. Our QB's running was better than I expected. The Griz run game was pretty good much, but not all, of the time. 9-19 and 5-7 (Fife). At least 3 drops on Ah Yat passes, so should have been 12-19.

Could the receivers have dropped more balls, especially in first half. Dropped punt early leading to TD for the MS.

Not too many penalties (4), but almost all untimely. MS hurt themselves with 13 penalties. A wideout false starts on a run up the middle.

Missed early extra point, but nice FG late as well as 2 others. KO's by Glasgow ended with no return yardage. Punter averaged 45, despite have to kick short twice. I liked him.

Some bad tackling, especially in space. Way too much. No. 45, the transfer from San Diego St., had 6 assisted tackles and a TFL. I thought no. 99 Hayden looked good at nose.

We let them out of way to many 3d and long situations. They picked up 6-14. UM was 2-9. Not good there.

An o-lineman just ran by the tackler who hauled in Gillman in front of bench later in game, when it looked like he'd have a big gain. Even a brush block would have saved the play.

Ref totally blew PI on long throw toward NEZ in later in 3d Q. Defender our receiver before the ball arrived. I loved how the NEZ and crowd booed that ref over and over. He was probably excited for the 3d Q to end, so he could go to the other end of field.

No TO's by qb's, rb's, and receivers. That was good.

No. 9 was a very good running back, and fast. But was only 19-76 with a long of 14 and 4.0 average. Gillman was 15-89 for 5.9 per carry, and Ostmo was 8-36 for 4.5. Ostmo ran well in first half, and more than 2d half. Rocker had only 1 carry.

The QB could throw nice shorter balls, but wasn't a deep threat. Longest completion was 26 yards. They and lots of injuries, and I'm not sure some of the o-lineman came back. QB was 19-39. Their receivers hung onto the ball well, even when pounded after the catch. Griz averaged slightly more per completion.

Our D stepped up, especially later in game. Lots of sacks in second half, with 3 by Harris. What a game he had. In last series, UM lined up Hayden at d-end and Harris must have been in middle, and he zoomed around the o-lineman for the sack. Must have been a match up issue.

UM was only 1-4 and redzone TD's. Not good.

First downs and total yardage fairly even. 71-63 plays to MS. In first half, UM had only 20 plays until the final drive of half.

I don't like the new 2-minute warning.

Great and loud crowd. 26,482. Got the MacDonald's 4 false starts for some free food.

MS hurt us with secreen passes in the 2d half. Not sure what was up with that.

Xavier Harris had a nice game. The nice TD swing pass to sideline was nice throw. UM made the decision to throw instead of hand off. when MS got substitute in late and got confused.

Griz missing all 3 of their pre season all-americans.

TOP was 36.5 to 23.5, in favor of MS.

Griz can clean up all or virtually all of the mistakes that were made. This wasn't due to lacking talent. Bobby sounded fine with the win and was excited on the radio after game.

Bobby was impressed with MS going into the game and coming out of game. Hard fought game.

MS coach: "What a game, what a battle. "Unbelievable" crowd, but he and QB thought they handled the crowd fairly well. And had prepared for it. MS lost 3 o-line in the first half and that hurt them. He made few, if any, excuses, tho. Referred to the 13 penalties, tho. Guys were prepared extremely well. OC called a brilliant game. Should have sealed off some of the longer runs. Good tempo changeup by Griz on swing pass. Noise makes it tougher to change up, as QB has to go up to line and it takes longer. Montana flies around. Plays great defense. Are physical. Bring pressure from everywhere. Crowd noise got huge and caused problems on the last drive.

This QB was starter early in season last year, and got hurt after 4 games. "Clark earned FCS Offensive Player of the Week in 2023 days before his season ended at halftime of Week 4."

He said they came into the game expecting to win it.

If the Griz finish their last drive at the end of the game - that run game is championship quality. Gilman was superb.

Likewise, the defensive scheme AND execution on MS's last drive was exceptional.

Get some guys back - clean up a few things...gonna be a fun season.

That ref got boo’d all down the west sideline as the teams were switching to the other end of the field. Horrible call. The WR got tackled on his way to the ball and no call? Ouch.

Gillman and Ostmo averaged 5.9 per carry. The 2 MS backs averaged 4.5.

Wood and Wright for MS each had 6 catches. Longs of 19 and 26.

Fontes caught 5 for 68. Harris 3-69. Simpson had a nice, key catch.

Deck returned 3 punts for 34. UM's KO return game wasn't great.

MS articles:

"The Bears entered Saturday night without a starting offensive tackle and exited the game without two more starters along the front. While the line held up for most of the night, the group struggled late and turned the Bears desperate."

"Montana's announced attendance of 26,482 was the seventh-largest in stadium history"

Childs’ return was good, but he never got another one. They all went to Harris.

"Hauck said the Griz had planned to play Fife in the second quarter. However, they had just 22 plays through their first three drives, so they gave Ah Yat a potential two-minute drive, but UM ended up going three-and-out.

The Griz got the ball back for another two-minute drive and let Ah Yat run it again. He led them down the field with a 16-yard pass to Aaron Fontes, a 15-yard pass to Keelan White, a 13-yard pass to Ryan Simpson and a 24-yard pass to Harris. He also ran for 11 yards."

"We’re trying to bleed it," Hauck said of the game clock. "I thought Logan (Fife) did a nice job managing that and running the play clock down to basically zero and bleeding the clock out there while we were running the ball down the field."

Missoulian.
