A suggestion; make Mick Delaney interim HC

BWahlberg said:
Mick who just retired, IMO is the guy that should be sought out to help weather the immediate storm. He's well respected within the ranks of the team and the ranks of Griz nation. He knows the current system. He's managed this squad in a prior time of transition as well.

I can't imagine hardly any player that would not support such a move. I hope that if Mick is interested that the interim AD would consider it.

Great call BW.

The retirement can wait for 1 year.

100% Classy Man.

... Delaney will rejoin the Griz just before they reconvene spring drills on April 9. He said President Engstrom asked him to be the coach Friday afternoon. “He called and asked if I’d be interested in trying to help,” Delaney said from Butte. “And I just felt at this time it was the right thing to do. As difficult as things were yesterday, he asked if I’d be interested in trying to keep things together.”

... Delaney was as shocked as anyone by Thursday’s news. “I was completely,” he said. “It’s been a hard, hard day, yesterday and today. I’m close to Robin and Jim both, and when something like this happens your heart goes out to them. They’re tremendous people and I respect them both.”

Delaney has been a head coach before: He coached his college alma mater, UM-Western, from 1991-92; he guided Great Falls High to the 1974 State AA football championship; and he was UM’s wrestling coach in 1968-69. “He’s my coach,” Bob Beers, who coaches the Griz offensive linemen, said Friday. “He coached my son (at UM-Western); he’s coached me (in 1968). I’ve coached with him and we’re going to support him and be behind him. “I think viewing the circumstances and the way they went, it’s probably a good pick for what’s going on right now. It solidifies the staff; it doesn’t fracture the staff. Our feelings are hurt, but there’s no resentment. He’s a good choice.” Delaney returned to UM in 2008 following the firing of Lubick by CSU. He left on Feb. 9, and now he’s back with little idea on how long he’ll stay.

Brints just pissed cause Chris scooped him on the official announcement yesterday. Get over it dude.

I still think Chris cheated on that and over-rode me posting the players letter 1st, lol

:D

And for the record Brint, you should be the next SID at UM. Who's in that position now? Guffey?

Funny story, Guff had me replaced as the "score runner" after the 1993 season in favor of his own son. It was a volunteer job, I sat with Chris Walterskirchen and took scores and stats to Bill Moos, Mick, and Peter Christian. It was fun to do, sat up in the pressbox.

Mick makes sense for these reasons:

1. He knows the spread offense, there would not be a loss in consistency with the system.

2. He knows the current practice schedule/plans, he wouldn't interrupt that.

3. He's worked with almost every coach on the team and has their respect.

4. Every player will respect and respond to him

5. He's handled this team in a time of transition before when Bobby went to UNLV

6. He was assistant HC under Bobby, can't recall if he was under Pflu

7. He's well known and respected in our recruiting pipeline and will help calm any nervous feelings with recruits.

8. Additionally he will have a calming effect over guys that may be considering transferring off the team.

9. He takes sh*t from nobody, demands the most out of his kids, would handle any other discipline issues accordingly (although the new SCC pretty much takes that out of the coaches hands).

-------

For the sake of at least the rest of spring ball... Mick is the best choice.

ALL the right reasons Brint--again the local savvy scribe/voice of reason nailed it! :thumb:

Again why so many posters on here need to learn to listen to Brint! He's right again!
A good choice to get us thru Spring ball...

and maybe through the Fall. I believe there was really good momentum built last fall and there are talented Griz athletes that want to return to the playoffs and show that last year was not an accident. Mick has the respect of the players and coaches. :thumb:

If my math is right... and maybe its posted elsewhere and I haven't seen it... but isn't Mick 69-71 years of age? If you hire him permanent, just remember he also has to recruit and as Pflu said, a lot of parents want to know how long a coach will be around and if there's stability in the program. I don't see that with Mick having... ummmm... so much experience under his belt. Just sayin'... it is a consideration, whether you like it or not, that has to be throw into the mix.

So you know what it's like to be fired. That's a great trait for an AD.

good ole' montana! never move forward always go back NEW BLOOD is needed some coach that has NEVER been here. if you want to move in a different direction IMHO. Montana needs to PAY it's coaches, you get what you PAY for. montana will not pay it's coaches a fair wage for the work they want!

From Saturday's G.F. Tribune:
"It's something that I have a lot of mixed emotions about," said Delaney, who retired a few months ago after serving four seasons as an assistant on Pflugrad's staff. "But it's the right thing. It's not about me; it's about the kids. I'll try to keep everything together until they do make decision as to the next fulltime head coach."

It was a good call and all you azzholes know it. We need to focus angst on the O and D coordinators.

guess i am an azzhole then, cause I don't think it was a good call, and it's showing more every week. To be fair, it's not Delaney's fault that he got thrust into this and is not very good at it. It's fuck wad Engstrom, for firing a great coach who wanted to be at Montana...not just use Montana.
