A Question

I don't know whether I think some of the unique offensive packages are cool or weird. I think I'm seeing the point of Kose in the jumbo package, but the choice to use Gamboa as a ball carrier seemed like a somewhat pointless gimmick when we don't seem to have a shortage of running backs. So my question is, do you think these packages are crafty or goofy (and why)?

Mike,I would say innovative and bold. Coach is creative and not afraid of failure. I like what he is doing.

I listened to the Coaches Show soundcloud and Stitt explained it pretty well. Obviously there are some great athletes with size on defense, such as Kidder, Kose, and Gamboa. Another reason they are put out there is that being defensive players, they bring extra intensity and energy to the field for their very few opportunities on offense. I like it, although I would prefer to see an actual RB get the handoff.

Really? How many have you seen in games? And how many can be counted on to gain a yard when you need it?

Football is a team sport, Why not draw from the whole team to make the best package for game winning touchdowns. Esprit de corp!

In our jumbo package, I'd line Jamal up as a tailback and give it him. At least he understands the RB position. Give that guy a head of steam with those lead blockers and I don't know how he doesn't pick up a yard.

Why answer a question with a question? ;) So, three in games that I can recall. Seven on the roster. All three that I've seen. By your logic, we can't count on Gamboa to gain a yard when we need it because he didn't get it this time.

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I guess if you just think of it as putting the best athlete you can for the situation on the field, regardless of what position they normally play, it all makes sense. I'm still wondering whether an athletic Linebacker makes more sense than a RB or a DT who is a converted FB, but that's why Bob Stitt is a successful football coach and I am not.

Two Montana running backs have carries this year. JN 33 for 156 (4.7 ave.); JC 12 for 23 (1.9 ave.). Facts are stubborn things.

Is "we don't seem to have a shortage of running backs." a question?

No, but "do you think these packages are crafty or goofy (and why)?" is. You did not ask how many RBs I had seen make carries in games, you asked "How many have you seen in games" - so yep facts are stubborn things (for everybody.) Lighten up, it's just a football board!
