A Huge W, What a game!!

:thumb: :thumb:   to the Coaches, players, and Fans. Finally an atmosphere, well the last 12 minutes at least. Even before then, fans were much better tonight. Still have some work though. One of the most exciting games I have seen in quite some time. Neither team would die. That was a game that represented college basketball as it should be.

Two things still need some work though. FT shooting, and FG% defense, inside and outside. Many things to like and to be encouraged by.

Offense is showing signs of continuity and unselfish play. Finally we had a complete offensive game tonight. We penetrated, drew fouls, balance inside/outside game. Especially encouraging was many players showing some heart and contributing in unexpected ways.

Ellis- Finally, the game he played last year. Great ball handling, took the ball to the hole often, and a pain in the ass on defense, going for steals. That is type of play the GRIZ need every game.

Chavez- Any question who is the "FAN FAVORITE" this year. Looks like he is going to bust ass every minute he is out there. At least has the last few games. Rebounded and scored well tonight. Chavez brings the "energy and passion" we need off the bench.

Dloughy- Decided to rebound when he was not needed to score. Great job on the boards Matt. Goes to show his athleticism allows him to contribute in every aspect or as needed.

Chase- Not many minutes but what a contribution, 4 pts, set picks, and gave the GRIZ an needed attitude.

Strait- Looked like Andrew of old offensively. Actually looked more comfortable from the FT line too, even though % was not quite where it needs to be done. He just looked less nervous and much more confident. He is becoming a quite good passing big man.

Hasquet- Clutch FT shooting. Team showed other's could step in when he struggles. That has not been the case for most part of this year. (Another story involving Jordan later.)

Martin- WOW!!!!!!!! Finally the game GRIZ nation has been waiting for the last 1 year plus. He shot lights out, played tough D, took care of the ball, wanted the ball in clutch time. Matt was in a zone tonight. His team mates, coaches, and everyone in the gym knew he was in a "ZONE". Matt brought an electricity to Dahlberg very seldom experienced in recent years. His play got the crowd going to stay!!!! How huge was that? I am not surprised at his game tonight and have a feeling Matt will be a key player rest of the year. However, hope he does not HAVE to go for 20 plus very often. Just hope he scores when called upon, and plays with the confidence and desire he did tonight.

Now to the coaching staff. Tinks for realizing that Ellis and Martin were difference makers tonight and Rundles was struggling. In recent past, they were going with equal playing time. Tonight got away from that, and stuck to the hot hand and chemistry thinking as for minutes. The staff's patience with Martin is beginning to pay dividends. He is not struggling like he was. I honestly feel the more laid back approach is much more effective when dealing with Martin. Granted LK toughened him up, but took a year plus to begin to get Martin back. I would not wish Martin's rollercoaster ride the past year plus on any player at any level. Also huge  for realizing when to bring Chavez in to light a fire under the team and the fans. Tinks has learned Chavez is the fan favorite. He will use that rest of the season, especially at home.

Now more onto Hasquet that I mentioned later. After the game, as the team was walking off the court. I watched Jordan every player beyond what the other's were. Finally he approached Tinks, expecting a congratulatory high 5, pat, or hug, etc. Jordan was like a kid in a candy store. He hugged Tinks with a huge smile. Walked with Tinks across the court, I could not hear what was being said. It looked as if it was Tinks reassuring Jordan that every game does not have to be on Jordan's shoulders and both being relieved that the GRIZ finally had 7 solid contributions in one game. I watched every player and coach coming off that court. No player was happier or more grateful than Jordan for the W and for Tinks. Both just appeared to have had a huge load taken off their respected shoulders. BTW, Martin did not want to leave that court. Nobody had energy than him coming off the court. He was jumping up and down, high 5 ing anyone, including fans.

Great night for all of GRIZNATION, not only a W, but a great atmosphere too. :thumb:

I sort of thought the knock on Chavez was that his defensive effort didn't match his offensive skills. But the last few games I've had a chance to watch on TV I thought his defense was as good as anyone's.

Is he working harder on D? Or has he just not had a chance to showcase his skills, for whatever reason?

Kinda puzzling to me? Seems like with more minutes he'd have All Big Sky numbers.

Mike was told if he wanted minutes he needed to pick it up on the defensive end, which is what he is doing now. I don't know how anyone can't be pulling for Mike with all the struggles he has had, and he keeps battling his demons and working hard.

I never thought the problem was with Mike's effort, but rather his knowledge of the schemes.

The zone that the Griz run has some tricky rules that don't really go with basketball common sense. It's not enough to bust your ass, you also have to know how to do it right.

Love to watch this guy work down low, he has the quickest move to the basket, leaves defenders grasping at air.....

Tink has to find more minutes for Mike!

I don't know if he has to find minutes for Mike. Maybe a few more but not too many. Mike is the best coming off the bench in a situation like saturday night.

Comment about Griz zone having some tricky rules is right-
it doesn't look like or act like a zone. I believe that people get
lost which benefits the opposition. The Griz should run a
traditional zone like ISU and play Chavez with Strait and Hasket.
Its not rocket science.

The griz zone or man to man is not rocket science. General rules are 1 pass away, then defend 1 step back and 1 step toward the ball. 2 passes away, 2 steps back and 2 toward the ball. Opposite baseline you are right in the middle of ball and offensive player on opposite side of the ball.

There are a few principles though that can make it difficult though. (1) Regardless of man or zone defense, the griz do not like switching men or zone coverage areas. If a switch is done, it is very temporary, more of a shadow than an outright switch.

(2) Force the ball away from the paint or to offensive player's weak hand. Simple concept applied at most all levels.

For reasons beyond me, the defense has been breaking down. 1 missed assignment has been killing the GRIZ. I am not sure what the solution is, but do know all the players have to be on the same page. Maybe a player is over anticipating, in turn ball fakes and reversals work well. In this defense it is KEY for each player to keep an eye on the ball.

I have seen the GRIZ practice each of the last 3 years, trust me, the coaches preach the little things over and over. I have faith our defense will find consistency, just as I had faith our perimeter game would be found. 1 obstacle at a time. We have the coaches and players more than capable of winnning the BSC tourney, hosting or not. We will be there in the end!!!!! :thumb:

What is this zone defense called? Is it a 1-2-2? 2-1-2? or something else? Or can it be several variations, with the step back/spacing rules being the same for all? thanks...

Basically it is Zone defense with some man principles. Variations are dependant upon opposition strengths and weaknesses. Many collegiate coaches have similar defensive philosophies to what the GRIZ have been teaching the last 3 years. If you want to understand it better, how about calling the basketball office for a schedule of their clinics? :thumb:

I believe the defense is based upon our offensive scheme for football. :thumb:

The zone they run is more of a matchup zone. I run a form of it at the high school level, and the biggest problem, is that at root while it is a zone, you have to defend men in your zone. The shape of the zone, depends largely on where and what the offense is doing.
This is why there are breakdowns, because you aren't in a space all the time, the zone moves a bit more in a matchup than in a traditional say ISU zone. In ISU's zone, they want teams to chuck it from the perimeter say 39 times, and take away a complete aspect of a teams offensive game plan.

The advantage of the matchup is dictating where the offense goes. A good matchup takes away wing entry into the zone, dribble penetration, and free passes around the perimeter, this is donee by moreon ball pressure and forces teams to play much farther away from the basket than in a traditional zone. Temple back in the early 90's was probably the best example of a true matchup zone. They would force teams to use 25 seconds of the shot clock to get a clean look at the basket. In a nutshell, you can shoot a team out of a traditional zone, whereas it is more difficult to do in a matchup style, because there is more on ball pressure, and the defenders play men rather than an area.

At least that is my education on the issue of zones w/ man principles.

:thumb:  for saving me that much more typing. You explained it about as well as possible. I hope people take your explaination. If not, attending a Griz coaching clinic may do the job.
