A Great Start

This is a solid way to start the season. I enjoy watching how the Griz match-up against other teams from other conf. Then it is fun to see how everyone does in the regular season and a good way to line them up when the tourny comes. This was a fun tourny to watch. Nevada kicked the kitty's butts in Reno yesterday, which was nice. Keep it going and GO Griz!

You're supposed to root FOR Big Sky schools when they play OOC. Nobody cares about the conference champ from a cellar-dwellar conference. Getting a 12 seed and a 16 seed is a big difference.

an obvious weakness is our inability to deal with press, whether the half court trapping defense or the full court pressure...nearly cost us the Boise game and fortunately LMU missed several bunnies.

that said, it looks like we have the makings of a very competitive team, lots of firepower and a gritty defensive effort on the part of all.

Against Boise Tinkles move to put Cherry in at the point just as Boise tied the game from being down 17 made a huge difference and stemmed the tide. Cherry can handle the ball and Johnson is really better when he is not the point. From that point on the pressure was handled. Cherry's shot looks to be poor, but I think he can be developed gradually to be a very good point guard. The Boise situation and his performance was good start in his development. He looks good defensively too.

,,,good point on Cherry and ball handling, he will need some help...guys looked confused and often did not come to the ball or create some safer passing lanes...

however don't want to see Cherry take the fouls, his shooting mechanics appear awful to me, such an unorthadox approach to jump and foul shots. His overall game outside of that is solid for a young guy, a very quick defender and when he gets some help he can deliver the ball off dribble.

Handling the pressure of the let down against the press against Boise and the pressure of the run at the end by Loyola will be the character ingredient that makes this team a winner and threat in the conference.

Cherry's shooting struggles are his upper body being all over the place. He needs to go back to the basics and relearn a perimeter shot. Start from a few feet out, shoot one handed straight up and follow through. Hit consistent from a few feet, go to 5-7 feet, same thing, then 10-12, 15-18, 20 to 23, a long the way add the guide/non shooting hand to support the ball. If he were to do this consistently for a few weeks to warm up and after practice, he would have his shooting become much better in less than a few weeks.

This takes less than 15 minutes to learn, rest of it is just repetition. I have taught this to every player as young 1st grade through HS, every one of them bettered their shooting. I had the same problem going into college, and John Morrison (Adam's dad, which he had Adam doing with small basketballs as early as 2 years old) broke down the fundamentals for me in little time. I worked on it over and over. In less than 2 weeks I was hitting jumpers consistently with very little effort. Since then, I have always shown this to every player I can. It works!
