Some time ago, UM moved its disorganized enrollment services from under the vice president for student affairs to the provost’s office. The reason given was that the president “wanted academics to be at the focus of our recruiting strategy.” But there have been other problems. The Independent reported UM ended a $700,000 contract with a marketing company from Iowa, hired to attract students, after it sent out messages urging teens to apply to “Montana State.” Kuhr said UM decided to change its recruiting strategy, bring the work in-house, focus on academics and “be much more specific about UM.”
