8-10 post scrimmage thoughts

From a skill position standpoint, the Griz are loaded with current and future horses. Anyone that can't see that is blind. EH and Jamaal Jones are absolute and proven beasts. A MAJORITY of FCS teams don't have ONE receiver as good as either of those two. The Griz have TWO. There is a great supporting cast of receivers for now and the future too. Running back is stacked as well, for now and the future. Trust me, Calhoun is going to be a beast. I will reserve judgement on Gus before I call him a horse, but he has shown he has the tools. But, he has to do it in games, and against some high-quality opponents the first four weeks of the season. AS we ALL know, the OL is simply put, the issue. PERIOD. At least right now. Can they get better (keep in mind, Schmaing sat out of the scrum today)? Yes they can. In time for NDSU, and or without Weyer, I have no idea. Probably not. But it's the issue, Stitt knows it, Germer knows it, TY knows it and has to even call off his dogs because of it. I'm sure NDSU is going to know it, Griz fans know it, everybody knows it. It's a dead horse that is never going to stop being beaten. It's a major concern.

However, to use that concern to rally and already get a pitchfork out for Stitt, and his system, or to use that concern to say the Griz don't have talent, that's not reaching, that's just pure lunacy.

Sober up hav, it's over and everybody knows it. Haven't you been following along? No O-line, no running game, no backup QB, and now the bad system has surfaced. Obviously it's up to the defense to win games, I don't know how many 7-6 or 6-3 games we can pull out. Despair is everywhere...Everett hasn't been sober for a week, Brint hasn't shown up to work all week, and CDA is burning shit down again. Is there still time to get Bobby and save the day?

At least the offseason was good. And we'll still beat the Cats.

I was under the impression that all they have are backup QB's....

Just got home from work (got to love mids). I did take in the scrimmage before work though. It was great to see BW there. I think the worry warts need to give this offense some time to get in sync. Almost every year at this time we are bitching about how bad the offense looks. It was that way under Hauck, Pflu, Delaney, and now Stitt. Yes, the OL looked terrible at 1st. and needs a lot of work. They unfortunately are dealing with a new OL combination thanks to injury, etc. The OL personnel from today's scrimmage is very likely the 1 we face NDSU with, barring some changes for the better with a few of our players. The bright side is, the OL gave the QB's more time as the scrimmage wore on. I think that was a result of the fast pace of the offense. That pace will be very difficult to defend as a game wears on. I don't recall any plays that took more than 20 seconds from 1 play ending and the snap of the next play. My guess is, most the plays were ran about 15 to 17 seconds apart. That pace is impressive.

I am pretty sure there was some serious ass chewing behind closed doors after the scrimmage. To be honest, because the OL was so inconsistent, it really was hard to truly evaluate rest of the positions. Our small backs did not do so well either in protection, and the QB's were under so much pressure they could not even compete swings and screens to RB's. Our only big HB, Counts appeared to have sprained his right ankle. He could not put any weight on it. I hope he will be alright. BW was pretty accurate, the running game was non existent, but the QB's would have gained more yards if plays were not blown dead as soon as they were touched. One play I think Simis could have taken it to the house from 35 to 40 yards out.

Speaking of QB's, the scrimmage did not start off well for the offense at all, especially the QB's. I am guessing Stitt thought Gus really could not gain much with the way the OL was playing, so why risk injury to him, and why not see who would emerge from Prater, Simis, and Chalich? All the QB's were hurt by dropped passes, I think Prater had 3 or 4 of his passes dropped. Prater has a great arm, but needs to find some consistency and get on the same page with his WR's. Chalich has great touch and his passes are very catchable. His TD pass to Henderson was absolutely beautiful. He placed the pass right on the money, Henderson did not have to break stride. As for Simis, he impressed me the most of the 3 backup QB's. He seemed to have the most command of the offense. He throws a good ball as well. He also can beat teams with his feet. He was by far the most consistent QB in moving the chains. From this scrimmage, my rankings in order are Simis, Chalich, and Prater (his WR's hurt him, but he also makes some questionable decisions).

The WR's dropped several passes, including passes right on the money. Ben Robert's 40 yard TD pass from Simis was one hell of a diving catch. This WR crew will make quite a few plays this season once our QB's get the time to find them. Despite the inconsistent results from this scrimmage, I am actually pretty encouraged by our passing game. I am more worried about our running game at this stage.

Defensively, really not much to add. Those boys looked terrific, dare I say "dominating". I was impressed on how much more aggressive the defense as a whole played. They made a lot of plays today. Caleb Kidder is a beast. If he stays healthy, he has a good chance at playing on Sundays. The defenders also seemed to square up much better when tackling, than they have the last few years, a lot better form tackling overall.

The best part of the day for me, seeing Ellis Henderson do what he does so well!!! He is back and looks healthy as ever.

I remember Stitt saying that the #1 QB will get 95% of the practice snaps and the others will have to train visually. I'm not concerned for the QB at this point. I'm pretty sure Stitt now knows who the #2 and #3 are and he will now have Gus running the show here on out. Saturday scrim should be better insight of the offense and by the 3rd scrim, I'm betting it will be humming along.

You know, there are certain players from both sides you can't help but root for. Whether Bobcat or griz. I think EH is one of those guys. Hope he plays on Sundays and has some great games this year....except for one game in November.

Lemme see if I have this right: If the offense runs all over the defense then we wring our hands over the defense. If the defense stuffs the offense then we declare the offense doomed. If both the offense and the defense are good or both bad then neither will look good so we bitch about everything. No matter what we have something to cry and whine about. God bless preseason football.

Agreed. It's how I've always felt about Kupp and a few others. And rooting for the kid from EWU to make the Falcons whose dad passed away during the playoff game.

Granted I don't live in Missoula anymore and therefore don't make any practices or scrimmages.....but, have the Griz ever had a scrimmage where the offense looked fantastic and completely dominated the defense? Ever? My point is, relax a bit folks. Defense will always outshine the offense in practices and scrimmages. The offense will be just fine. And maroon colored glasses off.......now.

Punt protection would’ve probably allowed 2 blocked punts (blocking team was instructed not to actually block the punt). But you could see on most punts they’d show the assignments before the snap. My guess is that they’ve not worked on this much yet. There was some confusion continually on special teams.

That was the scout team. The players with the beanies on their helmets... Coaches were holding up pictures for the scout team in the huddle to show them what to do. First stringers were told not to block the punt so the returners could get some looks.

Lider was the one to that looked shaky. Still takes forever to get his punts off. Plus he missed a PAT, which I think is his trademark at this point. Not sure why he's even getting reps as a kicker.

Peoples did a nice job kicking and punting. His leg is not quite as strong as Sullivan's but for a true freshman he did well punting and kicking off.

I guess I didn't pay too much attention to personnel on punts but that makes sense.

Lider should be locked as the punter and with the missed PAT probably just focus on kickoffs and punting. It's good to keep his reps up though with a few kicks - because we did have Sullivan get hurt last year - so it would be nice to have Lider available if needed to kick fielgoals/PATs.

I would like to stay positive but i have been to many Griz scrimmages with new offenses, coaches and QB's and this was the most inept performance I have seen. The offense was worse than any of the spring practices. Granted Gus sat after only a few series, but they were all 3 and outs. Sustained drive? I don't think the 1's gained a first down. The first first down I think was on a penalty. About 30 or 40 minutes into the scrimmage the crowd clapped and it startled me because of the deafening silence up until Caleb Lyons made a great diving catch. Some of the players actually turned realizing there was a crowd in the stands. I may be wrong but it seemed like the longest run was about 4 yards. Late a modicum of rhythm was achieved in the offense. Overall it was hard to watch offensively. Overthrows, drops, throws into coverage, a sieve of an offensive line was the norm. Psychologically the defense knows they are going to eat these guys up. It is not a good mindset for the offense. How many days do they have to find continuity. At the moment I don't see it happening.

We are E-Cynic! Where arm chair quarterbacks, former jr high school stand outs, and spoiled Griz fans live. No one's happy here. We haven't played a game, and the season is pretty much over . Stitt's a bust! Our players will never succeed. Might as well just forfeit. We're like Charlie Brown and our season is Lucy pulling the ball away! ARGGHH!

We have 17 offensive lineman on our roster, we should be able to find/coach some of those dudes up for a passable offensive line.

everyone needs to take a deep breath. Lets wait until we have a few games under our belts before we start jumping to stupid conclusions.

The team is in good hands. They will get coached up. Chill the F out!!

You would think they could get a decent oline....but doesn't seem like it
