60-59 Griz win

Thank you Jesus for allowing Tinkle to call it like it is (no sugar-coating): (from todays Missoulian)

...they (Griz) continued to struggle with their shooting, hitting on just 36 percent overall, 15 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

"Guys just have to make shots," Tinkle said. "We're getting good looks and when you don't knock them down you're going to continue to get them because they won't guard you out there. We have to have guys show a little more cajones and be Division I basketball players. We have some guys who want to be a part of the deal and be a guy, well then they need to step up and be a guy."

The Griz extended their 33-22 halftime lead to 40-24 on a pair of free throws by Eric Hutchison with 15:30 to play and looked to be on their way to an easy win.

But eight turnovers in a little more than four minutes got the Argos right back in it.

"They were really extending and trapping out of it," Tinkle said of the Great Falls zone defense. "Once they got one or two (steals) our guys got back on their heels and were just scared. We didn't even want the ball. We ran from it and hid. ... It was pretty frustrating to watch."

The Griz figured to struggle without senior center Derek Selvig, who is out with a badly sprained left ankle. Just how much wasn't evident until the Argos came to town.

"I think this is really going to pay dividends for us down the road, finding a way to win," Tinkle said. "I really credit Great Falls because they came in here expecting to win and they played like they expected to win. They made cowards out of some of us and really dominated, especially the last 15 minutes of the game. But I'm really proud of the guys who contributed to us pulling this out. There were some good things done late that will help us in preparation for conference, which we all know is the ultimate deal."

What Tinkle feels is exactly why I get disheartened/frustrated with Montana basketball, bunch of guys that are cowards and just want be "a guy" on the team, not "THE GUY"!

COME ON GRIZ, GROW SOME BALLS :!:

GO GRIZ

I think the Griz Achilles heel this year will be three point shooting, that is why they really need to get (develop) some contribution from some of their young and very good three point shooters in Weisner, Henderson and/or Gregory.

I also think rebounding will play a big role, along with three point shooting, in the success or failure of this team

I watched a FRESHMAN tie a school record at Gonzaga last night, hitting 9-13 three point shots! The Griz should watch this kid shoot (well MAN!).

Those initialed challenged egrizzers like myself need a little lineup clif note so....

OK, just one game but I have seen two teams out quick Griz, our guys are very good athletes but we look slower - getting our pockets picked by teams exploiting our style.

Maybe Selvig is an answer, but in my view we do not have a credible inside game. Last year we dominated the paint and it gave us opportunities for some shots outside. No aircraft carrier like Qvale to bail us out now.

I like our ball handlers and yeah it is early now and rather have us peak months down the road but still a concern. Watching ESPN bball and the teams with the quicks are now dominating play. The current leaders get the ball up fast and use a passing game to create the best shots.

I couldn't agree more man. Unfortunately none of the three attempted a 3 point shot last night and I don't think Henderson got on the floor.

Weisner didn't have a good perimeter look, but had two nice drives off early O & scored on one of them. The official box said Gregory was 0-5 and 0-2 from beyond the arc. One of Gregory's missed treys rimmed out. Both these kids are good shots & I expect things will click when they adjust to the speed of the college game.

not that this is an indictment of what's to come with the Griz, but i've been covering Frontier Conference BB for seven years and UGF will finish no better than sixth this season. You can almost set your watch by the Argos' finish every year no matter how much talent they appear to have. Right now, without having seen either team play, I only have UGF finishing ahead of Tech this season. Possibly Rocky but unlikely.

You're on. I can't even name the teams in the conference, so we are on the opposite sides of the spectrum. This reminds me of a recent bet against a friend I played against in college (a former runner up for the Heisman who started for the Vikes in 2 Super Bowls). $20. We had texted before I went to the Griz game. Later in the Griz game, I got a text from my buddy, saying "Would you settle for $10?", which was a good indication my team had won. I'm already preparing my speech for the end of the hoops season. "Would you settle for 50 cents?"

Gregory is very quick. His shots looked fine. They just didn't drop.

I think you mean Gregory. Henderson didn't play.

Oops, my bad. You are, of course, correct.

Duquesne should have been the wake up call for UM....it was a blow out...and they are were an average team....UM, MEN AND WOMEN have got to pick up the speed and aggressive play if they are to compete on the top level....Selvig has been hurt more often the the Griz QB..so, where is plan B?

Eh, the first half of that game may have been a blow out, but as soon as Montana figured them out and adjusted, they were able to keep up with the Dukes. They even won the second half. Shame it wasn't enough to actually win the game! I am still confident that the Griz can figure it out and get their act together come conference play.

bet is on...I'm wrong about ALOT of things, Frontier basketball is not one of em. UGF is ALWAYS talented. it's yet to make a difference in CONFERENCE play. Sixth, seventh or last, I'll be collecting that dollar :)

Looks like you're wrong.

The Griz sure have come a long way since that near disaster against UGF!
