50th Anniversary Of First Undefeated Season

I was 21, been married for 4 years had two kids, and was at all the home games that year. Dornblaser to me was the old white wooden stadium on the end of the men's gym, not that piece of junk south of the old Campbell Field off Higgins.

I was a student at UM '66-'70 and remember the '69-'70 FB team's achievements well. At that time many of the students were protesting the Vietnam war and not interested in FB. The student body didn't support the FB team at home games. I remember most of the FB team were members of the Sigma Nu and Sigma Chi fraternities and really liked to party along Gerald Avenue for 2 days after a win. Most of the OL and DL players were really, really, big duds walking alongside them going to class everyday. I remember not knowing about a win until a day later on away games as few students had radios or televisions (computers weren't around then). Red beer was the craze during this period.

I don’t remember for sure, but I thought the support was decent. Uperesa was a very big gentleman.

First person from American Samoa to play in the NFL. Do you remember the puka shell necklace. Still have mine somewhere.

4 pocket "seafarer" demim jeans were the rage at that time in Missoula. I remember puka shell necklaces coming a year later ('71 +/-). I was a butter bar (2nd Lt) in Army at Ft. Benning when the shells came out there. All my single fellow peers wore them during their off-time. Credit cards just came out. A hand held calculator just came out too. I was using a 10 key and slide ruler in Army at that time.

Ok, there it is, you've made the list. Knowing how to type & run a ten key without looking are two of my most treasured skills.

I think John Elway’s Dad was an Assistant Coach. Also, my fading memory recalls the offense was modeled after the U of Texas wishbone.

John Elway was one of the ball boys. The pro scouts once asked Mr Rhinehart who the best QB in camp was. Nez said "Keep an eye on that 12 years old right there...he's the real deal" Nez knew talent.

Yes I'm older then Chinese Algebra too

As I remember, they had to graduate from the junior college to be eligible.
Our option QB was also one of the jc fatalities and replaced by freshman Elroy Chong.
The 1969 season was also memorable because of Griz/cat game. According to experts we were favored by something like sixty points. The Griz led 7-6 with the cats other Norwegian kicker attempting a 47 yard field goal.
The TV announcers said "It's good" posting a 7-9 cat's victory final. My TV screen was saved by the announcers saying they're waving it off, Griz win.

Actually, John Elway was 9 in 1969.

I was at that game portrayed in that picture, it was a great year for our Griz.

Ok, it’s Kem, Player, Alabama, Info & myself. That’s it, that’s the list. :thumb:

Well thanks for thinking I’m super old :D .
Actually my dad was 11 in ‘69 and one of his greatest child hood memories was going to Griz games then. I still have a poster of the 1969 Year of the Griz, one of my prize possessions though it’s not worth anything.

Ok, I’m taking you off the list and adding Dillon & Tourist. But that’s it, that’s the list. & if I could find a copy of that poster, it would hang proudly in my office. I got to see them for one game in both 69’ & 70’ & they’re still top five in my estimation of all-time great Griz teams. But what do I know, I’m actually old.

Holy Crap Tourist - We made the list!

Great season, great team. Saw the '69 scat-Griz game at Gatton Field. Come 1975, Swarthout was quoted, "I quit after that season because of Title IX...The Equal Opporturity Officer came to me and demanded half the women's sports that was in the budget. I just knew the handwriting was on the wall for hurting our football program if we had to give up half the money. So I just quit than fight the budget battle." From 'The Divide War: Montana's Golden Treasure', by Pat Kearney.
Political Correctness. :puke: Everything has a cost.

And the football program was never great again . . . oh wait their best years were after title IX. :o It's almost like you are just being an ignorant a-hole. Title IX is why the US is so dominant in international women's sports. Turn on the Women's World Cup now, or the Olympics. Investing in women's athletics was the best thing to happen to our national sports teams. If you are a sports patriot you should applaud title IX. But I guess you are just an anti-American misogynist.

Zoo, you seem to have a reading comprehension problem. I quoted Swarthout, and cited my source. I am not politically correct, and never will be. There WAS a cost to UM Football from 1975-85. You obviously did not live through that period. Perhaps you could ask your parents, grandparents, or, god forbid, look up the wins and losses, and even the scores.
There is a difference between 'investing' and spending. You sound like Bernie Sanders using the terms 'revenue' and 'profits' interchangeably. You sound like a poorly educated left wing, young female(at least biologically) radical. There, NOW I'm an asshole. Throw all the insults at me that you wish, I could care less.

Hold up. Credit cards didn’t come out until the 70s?!?
No wonder the Greatest Generation was the greatest generation.

When I was at Ft Benning during "70-'71 that was how we got into the "O" club (Officer's Club). It was with a credit card (CC).

Diners Club credit cards were the first & invented sometime in the 50’s. No word as to whether Kessman showed up in Missoula with one. I know he had one of those playboy keys & a coffee club card though.
