45 years of Griz Cat Games

I did not write any of this, this is being posted because the dad and his son who currently plays for the Griz have been banned from this site for not having the same opinions as the moderators that run it like a Nazi concentration camp.

The original author also asked that I let every single former Griz player know that just because their names were not used in the writing of this, in no way was it meant to insult the sacrifice and devotion required to be a student athlete, you all are worthy of praise and honor. He also apologizes for any spelling mistakes on names, he was drinking.

The other night a friend who wasn’t from Montana asked me what all the fuss was about with the Montana, Montana State game this coming weekend. I asked him if he wanted the short answer or the long one. He said, “ the short one”. My reply, cats suck! He looked at me for a minute and asked, how long the long answer is. I responded, I can only speak for 45 years of Montana ass kickings, but since I have been alive this one sided brawl has been totally and completely awesome.

It all started in 1980 when I was born, no explanation needed on why I have no memory of the first game on my watch. I heard the cats won that one 24-7 but what is in the past is of no use to me.

Now on to 1981, I remember the day like it was yesterday it was October 31st at Reno H Sales stadium. I was not in attendance because my parents were low class sons a bitches who never took their kid anywhere. Boy do I remember Larry Donovan, Mike Van Diest, Joe Glenn and Marty Mornhinweg leading the Griz to a beatdown in Bozeman 27-17 over Sonny Lubicks cats. I knew I was going to love this game for the rest of my life. Cats got rid of Lubick and hired some guy named Doug Graber. I was 2 years old when I met Naseby Rhinehart, good dude, hope he enjoys his retirement.

Moving on to 1982 I was walking, drinking milk from a cup and digging what Reagan was laying down against the commies. The Griz once again Coach Donovan, Marty Mornhinweg and Brian Salonen crushed the cats in Missoula 45-15. So far in my young life the good guys are 2-1 Coach Graber got fired after one year and the cats hired Dave Arnold.

1983, 1984, 1985 sucked. I was running the neighborhood, riding my tricycle and raising money to buy out Larry Donovans contract to little avail. My Griz lost the first 3 years Arnold was the coach at state. Finally Donovan left and we hired the legend Don Read in 1986.

1986 I was 6 years old, thinking about a career in the Army, wondering what that goo inside Stretch Armstrong was and if it caused cancer. I noticed I was developing new and elite, social, physical, and academic skills. I didn’t know it at the time by later in life I realized I was the reason Montana football would kick off “The Streak” Owning the cats was like crack cocaine to me, better in fact. From 1986 to 2001 my Griz DOMINATED state, we won 16 straight games, outscoring them 572-260 in that stretch. Legendary coaches under Papa bear were Bob Lee, Robin Pflugrad, Bob Beers Jerome Souers. ELITE QBs like Brent Pease, Grady Bennet, Brad Lebo, Dave Dickenson, Brian AhYat Drew Miller, John Edwards. What an incredible time to be alive. Montana was gifted Earle Solomonson as a head coach for state, he never won a Griz cat game. Then we got Cliff Hysell after that guy! He never won a game against Montana either.

Blowout after blowout year after year, the names, Pease to Rice, Farmer Duce, Tim Hauck, Kirk Scrafford, the Kalafat brothers, Rick Erps, Shalon Baker, Wells, Douglas, Manzanarez, Guernsey, Travathon, Boomer, Crebo, Toone, Bouchee, Goicoechea (Im 14 no way I am spelling that right) Gragg, Bodie, Erhardt, the legend DJ Colter in 95 and his brother Kurt Colter in 2001 Denneheys, Paffhausens, Dallas Neil, McElmurry Heidelberger, Huntsberger, Pacheco that redheaded spawn of speed and satan Jimmy Farris, Olsen, my mind is spinning with all the winning, the history, the pride, the tradition of the Montana Grizzlies will NOT be entrusted to the timid or the weak.

Sadly Don Read would retire in 1995 after winning the first National Championship in school history against Marshal 22-20. I was 15 and I believe to this day this event is what started me drinking.

Mick Dennehy would replace him from 1996 to 1999.

1998 was the closest MSU would come to a win in the brawl when the Compson Twins covered the song Perfect Day and the cats still lost 28-21

Joe Glenn was hired in 2000. Joe Glenn would win the second National Championship in school history against Furman 13-7. That last garbage TD Furman got still pisses me off.

Ok so now I am 20 years old, trying to figure out what to do with my life, I don't want the military career, still haven't figured out what the hell that goo is inside stretch Armstrong and then 2002 happens and the shitty kitties break the streak 10-7. Now a logical and sane person would relish the fact that of the 22 Griz cat games I had been alive for, my Griz won 19 of them. I am not sane nor logical, I was reserved to the fact that the Griz would never lose that one sided series for the remainder of my life. And now the cats have their longest winning streak in the series (one in a row) since 1985

This is not acceptable in any way.

In 2003 we hire some new guy named Bobby Hauck who immediately loses to the cats his first year and puts a bad taste in my mouth. Granted he would recruit some future legends like Hilliard, Dow, Carpenter, the killer Bs Bagley, Biermann, Bergquist, Balogh, Joyce, Troxel, Wilson, Johnson, Ferriter, Green, Selle, Colt Anderson, Sambrano, Lebsock, Chase Reynolds, Dan Moore, JD, Quinn, Horn Hillesland, Opperud, Mariani, Ochs.

Hauck would finally beat the cats 5 out of the 7 years he was here. My personal favorite was when my Griz hung the cats legacy number 41 on them in 2007. Those hillbilly cowboys steal everything from Montana.

The year is now 2009, I am 29 the Griz cat record in my lifetime is 23 and 7.

Completely unacceptable. How did that program get 7 wins? Uggh

2010 is where my drinking starts to increase a lot, Robin Pflugrad was hired, seemed to have things headed in the right direction then Royce Engstrom happened. Frankly, that POS is worse than the cat program in my opinion. What he did to the university I attended and my Griz football team is unforgivable and I hope he burns in hell. Thank god my therapist has got me talked off the ledge and softened my thought process so I can express myself in a way that is much calmer than previously thought.

Oh and Dan “fucking Moore” that's it that's the bright spot from that douchecanoe Engstroms tenure

Now we have Mick Dennehy as head coach 2012-2014 and he beats the cats 2 out of 3 which aint bad but its still not good enough. Jordan Johnson, Ellis Henderson, Matt Hermanson, Canada, Strahm, KVA, Wagenman, Schye, Todd etc.

2015- 2017 Fuck you Bob Stitt. That is it, that is more than he deserves. You sucked so bad I don’t even care that we beat NDSU his first season. Worthless mutherf…er. The only thing that balances it out a bit is Rob Ash was coaching at MSU as long as he did.

2018 Hauck 2.0 great, super, more of the same, can’t wait

2020 Fuck you covid, you're a dick.

40 years into this thing and my Griz are up in the series 27 - 13

Names during Hauck 2.0 Gubner, Rausch, Lee, Deck, Flowers, Ah Yat, Davis, Humphrey, Fouch, Graves, Toure, Welnel, Ostmo, Ford, O’Connell, Gilman, Davis

The last 13 years have seen our program slide off the cliff as the cats have won 7 of them. Coach Hauck wins a lot of games in the BSC but this Griz cat game and National Championship games are definitely not his thing.

Thank god Montana legalized pot and I can buy gummies to help deal with life. It started out so good, like choking a prostitute, you grip tightly until they almost flatline then you have to let them get some air back so you don’t go to prison. We need to get that back this weekend (choke em and don't let go) and I am very confident we start a new streak that surpasses the previous one. I am thinking like 25 straight. 2025 is looking like a damn good year for the Griz.

Its nice to know I am now 45 and will never have to witness another cat victory in this severely one sided series for the rest of my life.

What else can I say but FTC, and I hope Vigen signs a 10 year contract at state.

The pride and tradition of the Montana Grizzlies will not be entrusted to the timid or the weak. GO GRIZ!

I can’t wait to watch my kid play on Saturday, GO GRIZ!

Yea, how could that poster have been banned for saying such reasonable things?

Again, have never seen the mods ban anyone here for opinions they don't like. I know at least one Mod that disagrees heavily with my opinion. I still like to drink beer with him when he allows it.

I don't think 45 games is that big of deal. I would wager several egriz regulars have more than that. I can confirm one.

Just wondering if its worth the read before i dive in.

I see others stating what im assuming is career games attended? Never kept count but opened Wa Griz for my first griz game ever in '86 and only missed a handful of games through '09.

Oh, and about seven road games.

I barely skimmed it, but it seems like mostly drivel along with a disgusting sexual violence reference that is only loosely disguised as humor couched in braggadocio. Par for the course when you consider the source.
Thanks for the Cliff notes version. Im thinking I'm probably good with just your notes and glad i asked before going down the rabbit hole😊👍.

Born in 1980, but full memory of the game in 1981, which I was at. That's about as far as I got and not surprised with what you detail.
