I think it is time to give JJ back Alpha's moniker of "Playmaker".

Welcome back JJ. Good to see him making a lot of big plays out there.
Why is this staff so "stuck" on Tully and Hermanson (sp?) at safety? Come on Mick, open up the safety job to all for the 1st week of camp! Maybe pushing Tully and Hermanson for their position would improve their play too. I just don't understand how they can continue to get bad results, and continue to see the field?
Because maybe they're still the best we have. I don't know why people are assuming that if we put someone else in, they're going to automatically be better.

Also, you're getting mad at the wrong person. This is on Gregorak.

I don't know if Gregorak or Delaney has the prevailing decision in playing time here. I am not for sure, anyone would be better. I do believe their inconsistent play at safety certainly justifies opening it up. At the very least the coaches need to do something different to find results at safety. Whatever they have been doing since the end of the 2011 season, just has not been working.

friend of mine who attended said,,,Gustafson was either a great redshirt freshman qb or we have a terrible safety issue....

he was going against the 2's, don't make any more, or less of that. ;)

As always AWESOME summary Brint! :thumb: Excellent overall thoughts and commentary and we now know what needs to be addressed over the summer in order to get ready to get Griz football back where it belongs--BSC championships and FCS title games!

I joked in a previous post about Hermanson and Tully having naked pictures of Delaney. But seriously, your question is valid. Why are these two such "sacred cows". The coaching staff brought in the D1 drop down for safety help. Let's see what he can do. It's not like a current starters are Ed Reed and Ronnie Lott. Come on!

Who are the injured guy(s) who can play WLB? That would free Van Ackeren to move to SS which sounds like is needed.........

I think KVA will stay at linebacker. They just moved Richards to TE, there are 6 linebackers on the roster (Coyle, JPK, #37, Kose, Owen, Lebsock). They recruited 6 defensive backs and 1 linebacker.

7 with Lippert

Sometimes there are guys that perform way better in practice than they do in games. I've seen that with some guys, especially DBs. They can cover and tackle, but when they have to put it all together on game day they struggle. Not sure if that is the case here though. I think they are probably just our best safeties at this point. For younger players playing time is earned on the practice field. If you get it done in practice and show that you can be an asset, you'll get opportunities, especially if the starter is struggling. I don't know anything about the dynamic between Ty and the safety group though, so who knows...

I for one didn't think we'd get him back. So stoked now and looking forward to fall.

Would it be a good move to move Jordan to safety and let Kose play lb? Jordy is faster and a better tackler. It might give the NFL a look at his future in the backfield. Just thinking outside the "box".

for some reason memories of the nickname "the hermey-badger" pop up when reading these reports.

Can't argue or dismiss JJ performance in this scrimmage, however it is refreshing to see someone like Gustafson in the wings.

This kid is the real deal also, and if he ends in up this fall as he has shown in the spring, he will be the #2.

Not a JJ type of QB, although at 6'-7" and a rifle for an arm with the accuracy of a scoped rifle this kid has a future.

This kid is a great acquisition for the Griz, and in the event god forbid JJ goes down, with some modifications of the offensive scheme and nothing drastic the team would not loose a step with Gustafson at the helm.

Was most impressed with the WR corp, kids that can catch the ball and do something after they get in.

This teams talent and chemistry, will make the coaching staff look good.

It was the offensive night, however the defense just might be the strength of this team.

The safeties don't deserve to be dissed. Hermanson and Tully played fine. Rominger had a nice pick. Most of the coverage issues, at least in the top part of the depth charg, came from corner play, not safety play. Also, the defensive play-calling in short yardage situations, like 4th and short, was aggressive, with blitzes coming and the secondary in man coverage. If you don't get to the qb, and the defense wasn't in most of those situations, there are going to be more completions. In addition, there were completions by the 3rd team offense, because the defense was not blitzing the 3rd team o, until very late in the scrimmage. This doesn't mean that safety play doesn't need to continue to improve.

Yea, North Dakota thought so too! Great to hear the kicking game is coming around also. Coaching staff has a few months to fix a few holes or have App state fix it for them.

What does ND have to do with how safeties played last night?
