Going through life without getting arrested is a pretty easy thing to do... or at least you'd think it would be
hmmmm, you must not have been in college in the 60's. I can still smell the tear gas, feel the racist hate, and remember more than one jail. Good times.
Odd, I was in college in the 60's ... down the Bay from the Berkeley riots, and watching our own versions. No jail time, not even a warning from an angry cop. Did not take a lot of brains to stay far enough away to not get caught up in the police sweep when they got tired of dodging bricks and Molotov cocktails. I do remember tear gas, and lots of hate going both ways. I also recall sticking some poor smuck under the shower -- clothes and all -- to try to get it off. Helped fix a few scalp lacerations -- worst was a girl who got hit in the back of the head by a half-brick thrown by another protester. I suppose there might have been a "harboring a fugitive" possibility in there somewhere, but no arrests, no jail time, etc.
So yes, it is not that difficult for most ordinary people to go through life without getting arrested.
