People are always anxious to "teach someone else a lesson." It's like somewhere along the line, someone put John Calvin in charge of schools, athletics, society and that if you can show that society is willing to hurt someone enough for judgment mistakes and youthful stupidity, "breaking them" will somehow send a message to someone else that minor transgressions have absolute consequences even as they watch on TV and see rioters burning and looting stores and getting invited to the White House.

"Three strikes and you're out" laws ended up putting people in prison for life for grabbing a piece of pizza.
"Zero tolerance" policies have similar ridiculous effects.
