3 3 5 defense

To help me get over the GRIZ terrible let down, I watched the Nebraska/ Colorado game.

Nebraska's 3 3 5 defense absolutely dominated CU's offense and contained their playmakers.

It was a 3 3 5 clinic. Nebraska would show 1 thing and execute an entirely different play. They pressured CU all game! Nebraska looks like they're about to be a contender again.

I hope our coaches watch and learn from Nebraska. They run that defense as well as team.

Last year we had players who grew up in the 3 3 5. Hill, Janacaro, Flink, Cotton, Walker, Gubner, Edwards are all gone and this years backers and safeties are transplants with no idea what their 1/11th even is. For two games the defense seems lost in assignments and the horrible tackling and angles show bad technique. This defense does not even remotely resemble last years. To make matters worse Meyer went out with what looked like a knee issue. Sorry but this defense is not where it needs to be-not even close.

A lot of those transplants CAME from 3/3/5 programs…Vaho. Otelewski, to name a couple.

I can't believe anybody would argue against the 3-3-5 scheme we have ran here in the last few seasons. It's been amazing, especially considering the type of players we have available and that we recruit.
What we need to change IMHO is trying to break in a new transfer QB every single year.

The last few seasons the Griz had Dante Olson, Jace Lewis and Braxton Hill. Hopefully Riley Wilson will take over that role, but what I don’t understand is why Riley would be in stance playing DE at times. I think he needs to be on his feet and mobile at all times.

Last year we had an offense that got enough first downs to keep the D from getting gassed. Our TOP this year is ridiculous.

The Griz have competent people running the defense and quality personnel so things will improve as the season goes on. I'm not a huge proponent of the 3-3-5 defense but I'm fairly sure the lack of success at this point has to do with performance instead of scheme. They lost so much talent/production from last season there was no way there wasn't going to be a drop-off...at least early. I believe this staff will figure out many/most of the issues by this Saturday and there will be a vast improvement. Please try to remember that the defense that took you to the Finals wasn't firing on all cylinders at this point last season.

Good grief - give it a rest...every single thread...same thing.

Yes, anemic 2nd half offense was the problem. D1 coaches make timely adjustments to put players in position to execute efficiently. BH and coordinators did not. It was just a very poor showing.

OC did not adjust and neither did DC won could not stop their 2nd half +1 scheme.

Doesn't bode well for the cat game...

It wasn't just the 2nd half. There wasn't a single sustained drive in the game. The three TD's were all either broken plays or a trick play. The longest (# of plays) sustained drive is the one that ended in the FG.

And the last 30 seconds of that drive was some of the worst playcalling.

Yes, I get it...nonetheless...the 1st half was not the problem.

UND's 2nd half adjustments were elite. Griz adjustments were straight amateur hour.

I'm not sure UND really changed their game plan or made many adjustments all that much.

They just completely out-executed us from the 2nd half kickoff.
You're kidding right?

Their transition to the run game...including +1 schemes in the 2nd half resulted in 20 unanswered points...their defensive adjustments shut down the Griz offense in the same half with their defensive front completely dominating the Griz o-line.

Tell us you didn't watch the game without telling us you didn't watch the game...

I forgot how prickly you get about the most innocuous things lol

They ran the exact same zone read running offense in the 2nd half they ran in the first, it was just more effective because we were more out of position, just like I said. Romfo's long carries of the 2nd half (and the game) were a scramble on a passing play, another scramble on a passing play, and the dropped snap zone read he ran in for a TD. They ran 2 QB runs the whole game before their final drive, where they switched to 2 +1 QB run plays in between...more of the same zone read runs they had run all game.

So it sounds like I wasn't the one who didn't watch the game (trust me, I've watched it several times now).

I only get "prickly" when posters don't post correct information or misrepresent reality - as you have.

They made substantive adjustments and you all but say it above.

2nd half und adjustments won that game for them. Lack of similar adjustments by the Griz lost that game...

Those are the cold, hard facts.
