3/23 Scrimmage report

Thanks for the report Brint. BTW how many fans were in attendance?

Maybe 300 to 400. There were a lot of high school players there too, it was "junior day" but they sit on the other side of the stadium.

Our offense is terrible.

We will be under center 83.7 percent of the time.

Delaney can't coach.

Boogers.

Etc.
agreed....
I think you guys are going to be pleasantly surprised this coming year. We were damn close to a pretty good year last year despite going against a strong head wind. Look for things to be much improved.

I think the reason you saw virtually no passing game in that scrimmage, is because we only have one real college QB on the squad (except for perhaps Gus). JJ. McKinney and SSH should not be playing QB at this level. They would be challenged even in high school to play that position.

So, gamboa that good and quick or we just not good as we want to be :?: :?

Gamboa is extremely fast. Check out his 100M times from his senior year.

one more: how was Van? any videos of scrimmage or was it not allowed?

I didn't watch the whole scrimmage so I only saw about six of his carries. I had very low expectations of Van coming in here having been switched from RB to I believe CB at Marshall and some injury issues, but I was very impressed with his speed and cutting ability. If he stays healthy we got a steal. I think it was Wahlberg that compared him to Orenzo Davis from MSU. I would agree with that comparison and probably argue that Van has better speed. We should have another very talented backfield this year with Canada, Counts, Van, etc.

I think Hammer and some of the other posters are closer to the reality of whats happening at this time. After all, in the Scott Gragg interview thread it sounds like a tweak of the offense is whats up.

As a reminder heres what he says:

OFFENSIVELY, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE ON THE FIELD NEXT YEAR? WILL THERE BE MANY BIG CHANGES?

“You look at the skill sets of our quarterbacks, and many of them were recruited for the read-zone-option style of offense. So we’re not going to move that to the sideline and adopt a whole new offense. What you saw from us in an up-tempo read-option is certainly going to be a component of what we do, and will always be a part of what we do.

“With Kefense and myself, with our pro and traditional sets, you’re going to see some of those flavors too. Definitively we’re going to play with 11 guys (laughs). Our quarterback is going to hand the ball off occasionally, he’s going to run with it occasionally and he’s going to throw it occasionally. But to the novice onlooker or fan, it’s not going to look that different. Maybe to someone that is very familiar with Oregon Ducks-style football or however you want to label that trend, there’s going to be some subtle differences.”

IF JOHNSON HADN’T RETURNED, WOULD THAT STILL HAVE BEEN THE PLAN?

“We had our playbook finished about three weeks before Jordan’s trial even started. And I think that’s a credit to Mick, a credit to Kefense and a credit to the program that we were going to remain focused on what we do. That’s what was best for Jordy and that’s what was best for us. So we’ve maintained that focus.

“Now knowing that (Johnson) is back and he’s with us, it expands our playbook more than it limits it, so we can add tweaks knowing that he’s back there.”

I don't think anyone has video of this scrimmage. None of the TV stations have clips online. The Missoulian article online doesn't even have a photo. There's no video on Gogriz.com

Van was the best RB on the day. Canada had one nice burst but the play was very conservative.

Anyone care to venture a guess of how much weight Holmes put on in the offseason? I am so stoked about this kid. I hope he can be a beast against the run this year too. This kid has a very high ceiling and can become an all time great GRIZ.

Thanks for the report!! I really think Counts is gonna have a huge impact this coming season. Hopefully TM picks it up a bit before it all starts. JJ and TM mixing it up will hopefully make a big difference.

The only thing I didn't like about Van was hearing that he didn't hit the hole hard. I've never liked RB's that dance around in the hole, so hopefully he gets better with that. If he can, it sounds like he'll be a pretty dang good back.

The instances were very limited. Hitting the hole hard did not appear to be a problem in the few I saw.

I'd posted that as well, as soon as the ball was in his hands he was dancing/cutting/shifting - which worked sometimes, esp when he didn't have a lane, however there was one play I recall where the right guard pulled to the left, came thru the gap - hit JP - and Van had a wide open lane (at least it looked that way) instead he cuts back to where the guard left and gets a few yards.

However - he covers it with his speed. In a few plays we saw he turned nothing into something. He's got a great burst to do that and that's something I don't see much in the FCS. He's a change of pace from our usual 1-cut back that we've had over the last decade. I like what I see from him - haven't seen him catch a pass yet though, I assume by playcalling and situation more than by purposely not throwing to him.

yes, Delaney has shown his brilliance as a master strategic planner and organizer in the past. This is just carry over of his genius ways. Good call on that one.

I just spit coffee all over my keyboard! Thanks

Great comment as usual Stubbins. You always hit the nail on the head with regards to Delaney. It's not like this head coach has anything to prove this year, right? LOL. Some on this board act like he is Urban Meyer
just tossing out the balls after a championship year. Make no mistake, Booger is in the Cross hairs this season!

Again I need to thank Brint for bringing us an in depth take of the scrimmage. He does so damn well I must say I have forgiven him for being a democrat. Any more stuff you can post is always a good read. Thanks again Brint! Go Griz.

"Run through the hole... not to the hole." - Marshall Faulk

It's all based on the type of scheme you're running. Zone blocking schemes don't want a RB hitting the hole hard because the hole can develop anywhere on the LOS. Once a RB finds the hole then, yes, run through it hard. Now when you have 3rd/4th down and you need a yard, then yes line up and hit the hole hard. Too many times I have seen RBs find cutback lanes because they allowed the zone blocking scheme to develop. If you want a RB to hit the hole hard without letting the zone scheme develop, it could be the difference between a 2 yard gain versus a 10 yard gain or better. :twocents:
