The season has officially come to a close, so with that, welcome to the 25-26 Griz Basketball Schedule Tracker. I will once again take the reins on unveiling all 31 games for next season, and this year for the first time in 3 years, we are starting off with one known opponent as Northern Iowa will come to Missoula on Friday November 14 in the return game of a home and home series that originated this season in Cedar Falls in a game we were an absolute no show in. Here are some things to note about next seasons schedule:

  • 31 total games comprised of 13 non-conference games and 18 conference games with the start of the regular season commencing on Monday November 3 and concluding on Monday March 2.
  • 18 game conference schedule that comprises a double round robin of every team playing each other at home and on the road. Conference play will begin on Thursday January 1 and will conclude on Monday March 2. Typically, the only difference we’ll see is they’ll invert the schedule. For example, we played the cats at home in the first half of the schedule, so next year we’ll play them at home in the second half of the schedule. Same goes for everyone else. Last years conference schedule was released on July 18, and I suspect it will be around that same time again.
  • 13 non-conference games that will comprise of home and home games (UNI), 3 game MTE (likely at home again), money games (likely 3-4), non-D1 home games (likely 2-3), and the 2 Summit League challenge games (vs. NDSU, @ UND). The Summit League games will be played on Wednesday December 3 and Saturday December 6.
  • As for money games, I would once again expect to see about 3-4 but I’ll say 3. This year Oregon, Tennessee, Utah State, and San Francisco were all money games. Oregon has kind of become an annual opponent for us so I will not be surprised if we see them again next year. Another one to keep an eye on is Texas. Rumors are circulating that Texas is going to hire Sean Miller as their new coach. We routinely played Arizona when he was there, then we played Xavier in his first season there, and I think there’s a chance we could be playing Miller again if he goes to Texas. I also think we’ll play at least 1 Mountain West team again and my early prediction is a team that we haven’t seen in a while (Boise State). Wouldn’t be surprised to see San Jose State pop back up again next year, maybe an Air Force or possibly Nevada who we saw two years ago.
  • As for mid majors, we already know Northern Iowa is coming to Missoula, but who else might we see in the MTE? I think we’ll see at least one Big West team this year, perhaps another Summit League team outside of our two challenge series games, maybe another WAC team like perhaps Seattle U or Southern Utah. If we host a 3 game MTE again plus UNI and whoever our Summit home opponent is, then that would already put us at 5 D1 home games. That would be more than we had this year and then we would only have to schedule two non D1 home games instead of three next year. Unless Decuire wanted to play 8 home games in the non-conference, then we could see three but I’m not totally sure he would do that.
  • As for road games, unless they were to add another home and home that starts us on the road next year, I have no clue what we could see for mid major road games besides our one Summit League game. Maybe Decuire would take a road game at one of the Dakota schools perhaps? Perhaps another WCC team? We’ve seen Santa Clara, Gonzaga and San Francisco in recent years. Maybe we see like a Pepperdine or a San Diego or someone like that? I’ll be interested to see our mid major road games next year.
  • The last 2 seasons we’ve hosted Tech and NWIC in Missoula. Tech has shown quite the interest in wanting to play us over the years as has NWIC, but that’d be really lame to see both of them again next year. I hope we shake it up and go with someone different next year like Carroll or Rocky. That’d be fun. The non-D1 games are usually the last games added to the schedule as they like to nail down all the D1 opponents and then fill in the remaining holes with NAIA’s or whoever. I will say I do like playing a non-D1 in the opener as I think that’s a good way to knock the rust off from the Summer and get your feet wet. So I suspect our opener on Monday the 4th will come against a non-D1.
That’s all I got for now. I’ll do my best to keep everyone updated throughout the course of the offseason. Expect a full non-conference schedule by end of August, early September. If anyone hears anything at all, please feel free to pass it my way. Enjoy the offseason everyone!

Update 3/31

As the month of March comes to a close and the College Basketball season ends one week from tonight, there's a couple things I want to point out to people. First of all, don't expect any announcements of games until end of April at the earliest. We need to at least get the tournament over with and then in the subsequent days is when some announcements of games for teams across the country will start to come out. Last year we got 2 announcements in the end of April. We'll see how comparable that will be to this year.

Another thing to keep in mind when it comes to scheduling is recruiting. Last year the Griz were recruiting all the way into July. When that happens, scheduling tends to take a back seat to roster construction for obvious reasons. Short of something catastrophic happening, I see no reason why DeCuire and the staff will still be recruiting that deep into Summer. Especially since we've already had one transfer commit in March which tracks well ahead of last year. Plus there won't be as many chairs to fill as last year, especially if Sawyer and Kai are both back. If that's the case, they have the potential to wrap up the recruiting pretty quickly this offseason. That would then give DeCuire and the staff much more time to build the schedule. If you remember last year, we only knew of three opponents through the end of June which was pretty lackluster. The bulk of the announcements came in July and August. This year, I think there's potential to know more opponents in May and June compared to last year.

The other thing I wanna mention is the majority of the time, the stuff we uncover for the schedule tracker comes from members of the media who follow scheduling very closely. Whether that comes from people like D1 Docket, Rocco Miller, Made for March, etc. I have one source that has told me that when they recently filed a public records request, UM Legal Counsel informed them that they are looking into a way of streamlining the availability of game contracts. What that means is because there is so much demand for game contracts not just for Basketball but also for Football at UM, UMLC is considering creating a webpage on the UM website where anyone can go online and view game contracts as they become available. If that ends up happening, then schedule tracking will become so much easier as anyone of us will be able to see the contracts as they get uploaded online. Will this actually happen? I'm not so sure it will, but it would be a massive help for uncovering the full schedule throughout the offseason. That will be something I'll continue to monitor for everyone. This was just coming from one source that I talked to. Who knows for sure how much he actually knows? I'm not entirely sure, that's just what he told me.

Other then that, it will probably be about a month or so before we get any new scheduling news. I'll continue to keep everyone updated as we move through the offseason. For now though, let's get that roster solidified! Go Griz!

As of March 31 here's what we know:
November 15 vs. Northern Iowa
December 3 vs. Summit League
December 6 @ Summit League

Just a quick update for everyone. To nobodies surprise, there is no new schedule news so far. We're still in April and teams are still working on rosters and recruiting. The good news though is the transfer portal closes tomorrow, which should subsequently lead to a significant slow down in recruiting in the coming days and weeks. As that happens, then teams will start to turn their attention more to scheduling, and I believe we will begin to get our first few updates on the schedule in May.

In the meantime, I thought it would be fun to take a stab at what next seasons Big Sky-Summit League Challenge series games will be. Then when they actually come out this Summer, we can see how close I came. The number one criteria they use in determining the matchups is regular season standings from the year prior. So keeping that in mind, here is my uneducated guess of everyones matchups:

1. UM - @ Omaha, vs. St. Thomas
2. UNC - @ St. Thomas, vs. Omaha
3. PSU - @ SDSU, vs. NDSU
4. ISU - @ NDSU, vs. SDSU
5. cats - @ UND, vs. USD
6. Idaho - @ USD, vs. NDSU
7. NAU - @ Denver, vs. UMKC
8. EWU - @ UMKC, vs. Denver
9. Weber - vs. Oral Roberts
10. Sac - @ Oral Roberts

I'm not even gonna attempt to predict which night who would play where. I do think the Griz will host on Wednesday and play on the road on Saturday as it appears that they invert it year to year. Other then that, I'll keep everyone posted on any new updates as they come in.

Go Griz!

Just a quick update here as we approach the end of May. Just like last May, things have been really slow. There have been no new updates and that appears to be the trend among all of College Basketball as so far, only 2 D1 teams have announced their full non-conference schedules. That tracks well behind last year.

This Friday is the Butte GSA golf tournament which I will be participating in. I imagine DeCuire and his staff will be in attendance, and if they are, I'm gonna try and get some schedule updates and maybe even an update on Joe Pridgen's status from them and will report back with any new info I get. Even if they aren't able to tell me who the exact opponents are, I imagine they would at least be able to tell us conferences they are from and then we can boil it down from there. I suspect once we get into June, information will become more readily available any way. Last year we got flooded in July and August with updates and it's looking like that will be the case again, but I'll see what I can muster out of the staff on Friday. For now though, here's what we know:

November 14 vs. Northern Iowa
December 3 @ Summit League (prediction: Omaha)
December 6 vs. Summit League (prediction: St. Thomas)

Just straight up ask one of the assistants or even Travis - there’s no reason they won’t be straight up with you.

It’s not that I don’t think they won’t tell me, it’s just sometimes they can’t say who the team is until the contract is signed. Despite knowing that they’ll be playing that team. I have no doubt he’ll tell me the confirmed ones, but they may drop tidbits about another team that hasn’t signed on yet. That’s what I meant.

Update 6/4
The Summit League matchups have been announced and the Griz draw both North Dakota schools. We will host NDSU on Wednesday December 3 and play at North Dakota on Saturday December 6. The Bison finished fourth and the Hawks were sixth in the regular season standings. That’s interesting how they arrived at these matchups. Good on the conferences getting these out much earlier this year. They didn’t get them out until mid August last year. BTW my guess was way off. I had us penciled in for Omaha and St. Thomas.

Updated non-conference schedule
November 14 vs. Northern Iowa
December 3 vs. North Dakota State
December 6 @ North Dakota

I’d much rather play those other two. Tired of the same ones

To be fair we haven’t played UND since the 21-22 season so it’s been 4 years since we’ve seen them. plus now I feel confident we can win at least one road game in non-conference this year lol. NDSU at home will be fun.
I'll give you that. I guess it SEEMS like we played UND more recently than that. St. Thomas would've been a good game. UND being a former conference member probably makes this less enjoyable for me I suppose. hahaha
