MBBALL 2026 Big Sky Conference Transfer Tracker (New and Improved 2026 Model!)

Two things:

It would appear we've completely given up on HS recruiting (and maybe that's just the way it is)

And we have so much roster turnover now it's very difficult to root for any of these kids. Basically a whole new team every year. Sad, really. Certainly changes fandom...
Yeah, I am to the point that I glance at the score and not much more. My interest level as pretty much fallen to zero.

The games are still fun to attend, for sure. My Kids enjoy them. More so when they win (haha). I wish the students were in to it more. Very little student atmosphere. Student section is pathetic.

Whether its freshmen or the transfers they bring in, the quality of the student athletes Travis and staff are recruiting are phenomenal kids. Being close to the program, I am highly impressed.

If I ran the program as a coach, id push the administration to go all in on the student attendance and making game attendance more family friendly. Until we're gettung close to consistent capacity crowds, lets basically give away tickets to kids. When Dahlberg is rocking with students and great attendance, its as fun of an atmosphere as it gets.

We can’t be done…right?
Travis says they are done recruiting for this year. We've filled 14 of 15 roster spots.

There was a part of me that thinks they were waiting to see what the NCAA said about extensions to a 5 in 5, which might have allowed them to bring back Taylor. But the NCAA said that in any move to a 5 in 5 model wouldn't grandfather in players from this year. Would only be eligible for players 26-27 and beyond.

There are breadcrumbs they are still recruiting to see if there is a good fit for the program. They absolutely won't fill it if the staff doesn't think they'll benefit from the added player. I think they'd fill it if someone fell into their laps.

What I suspect happened to a lot of DI low majors is the market was so absurdly out of wack that you were almost obligated to try to wait it out if you wanted access to certain types of players. Several teams in our conference still likely have multiple roster spots open. NAU has nearly most of its team to fill. Staff could be sitting on that last roster spot to see if a high major type kid drops that fits what they are looking for. That is purely speculation though.

Where did Travis say we were done at?

I have seen some highly rated P4 programs go into a season with less than 12 scholarship players. There is not a lot of great ways to play 15 players. Many coaches like to keep at least one spot open all summer, just incase the right player comes along. Once you have a roster with what you need for a solid rotation and good backups, you only want to add someone who will elevate your program. Otherwise, go with what you have. 12, 13, 14, or 15 players? It's hard to have more than an 8 to 9 man rotation. The rest of the team is there in case of injury or to fill in as the scout team. With 15 players, it's a good bet that 5 won't see the floor.

See bolded above. I think that the Griz also want to try and spread the $ around to the 14 players, as opposed to adding a 15th guy, that like Oldrunner said, is not very likely to see the floor.

This is a good take and it is the reality of college basketball and usage.

Roster building at the college level is a crap shoot at best and has become so much more of one than it ever used to be. You don't know what you have (with HS players in particular) until they show up. If you are UNC or Duke, you know your talent depth is superior to 90% of Division 1 programs but it gets a lot more volatile the deeper you get into depths of D1. You have to run out the guys who give you consistent chances to win basketball games. That used to come down to gut feel, but it is in the metrics.

So whether your usage is focused on 7 or 10, there is going to be a point where you are getting less and less from the cohesive group. The depth is there in part because teams need bodies and break glass in case of scenarios, but its hard to image of running out 15 players at the college level. You are simply better off metrics wise having a shorter rotation.

10th thru 14th won't see much time either.
If your second five were as good as your first five, then I could see a legit ten man rotation, with 11 and 12 getting spot play. That is a huge IF, and even then 13, 14, and 15 never see the floor. Having 15 players does provide for more marginal players to get a chance at it. There may well be another kind of one and done player. What used to be the walkon player.

I kept getting the vibe that Montana had a silent commit out there, but as we drag on into May I don't think that is the case. Looking like at the moment they'll have 14 on the roster. I don't think that is criminal, particularly if that is a) all you have in your budget is for the 14 you have on roster and b) you rarely if ever play the full bench and c) you are convinced that no one is top of the rotation good.

Most of the guys UM had been connected with have committed. Miles Goodman who I thought would be a good match, is still out there but there is absolutely nothing to suggest Montana is actively recruiting him at this point.

I do think it's criminal because we only have one big guy on the roster. What the hell are we supposed to do if Mpiana were to get hurt next year? Go Lady Griz style and run the 5 out because we have no post presence at all? If they intentionally leave the last roster spot open when they could have brought in an additional big man, I'm gonna lose my shit.

Definitely an issue for this roster. We don’t even know if Mpiana can play too.
