2025 FCS Week 1 Schedule

EWU at UIW is intriguing.
How bad is UIW this year?

With how bad EWUs defense has been lately I'm expecting it to be a bit more of a shootout this time around. My picks:

MSU @ Oregon: This isn't New Mexico, maybe keep it close for a quarter but get grounded down.

UNC vs Chadron State: Bears get one of their few wins this season.

Weber @ JMU: Wildcats will get smacked by one of the top Sun Belt teams

EWU @ UIW: As mentioned expecting a shootout, trust UIWs defense more but could go either way.

Sac State @ SDSU: Most intriguing Big Sky game week 1, I'm actually going to pick Sac State as I'm a fan of Marion's offense and trust their talent over SDSU rebuilding.

Portland State @ BYU: No sugar coating it they're screwed this season, they just look bad.

Cal Poly @ San Diego: I think the Mustangs will and need to get a win here.

ISU @ SUU: Second .ost intriguing Big Sky game for me. Bengals offense looked potent vs UNLV and they'll be playing what should have been a playoff team least season in SUU. Going with ISU.

NAU @ Arizona State: Lumberjacks are going to get smacked.

Idaho @ WSU: I don't trust the Vandals without Eck, especially with Jimmy Rodgers now at Wazzu.

Davis @ UT-Tech: Aggies smoke future Conference mate.

While I'd like to be optimistic about EWU's chances against Incarnate Ward after last week's performance, our coach said something very concerning - the team would have to lean on the defense this year. I think even Griz fans who don't follow EWU much know what's in store for the year with that comment.
Gotta imagine that this *should* be Aaron Best's final season with EWU should they have another terrible season.

I feel the EWU vs UIW is a 50/50 game this season based upon UIW performance this past week. The game will be won the team who is more hungry. I feel the teams are basically balanced this time of year.

That'll be the dream, unless there's other contract shenanigans lurking, as Eagle Nation found out when we thought Best's contract was supposed to be up last year.

Very much agree, as I said earlier, I might have gone to this one if I didn't have to be in Houston this weekend. I think that it is more of a statement on whether UIW is what they were expected to be rather than a test of what Eastern might be.
If UIW loses, they will go 0-4 in ooc with UTSA, NAU and ACU left to play. Even if they run the table from there, 7-5 won't get them into the playoffs. I don't see SFA, Lamar or SELA being much this year and they don't play McNeese. They have all the SLC bottom feeders ahead though with East Texas A&M, Houston Christian, Northwestern State and UTRGV.

Not to blast any ones picks, I just want to point out that I have heard several people on Social media and e-griz state that Sacs talent may out do SDSU because they are rebuilding.
SDSU may be rebuilding however they have a foundation. Sac st is new construction.
Lots of talent that has never played before, a new offensive scheme, a new coach, lots to put together for game one. I think SDSU forces too many three and outs for SAC and then grinds the Hornet defense with their o-line and running game.

It’s also in Brookings as the season kickoff so I expect it to be one of the more hostile environments they will face this season.

According to Sam Herder on Colters show tonight, reports out of Sac State are that the offense doesn’t look as dynamic as they thought. If that’s the case then SDSU’s defense could have their way with them.

Most definitely... UNC has earned the right to be a laughing joke with the pain that has been inflicted upon us... doesn't change that I still cheer for them. I have become a huge Big Sky fan over the last 5 years only because of the way the P4/P5 has been handled becoming a monetary powerhouse. So I cheer for Big Sky over any opposing conference any chance I get... disappointed a lot of the time but still cheer for them. This weekend it was ISU who had the win but gave the disappointment. I also am a MWC fan which is really crappy the way those PAC traitors left the conference... was awesome this weekend to see the future PAC traitors get asses handed to them and Hawaii to get the win.

As for other Big Sky podcasts. I listen to Samuel Akem pretty religiously. If you know of any other guys from other schools that you feel are worth listening/watching ... please do put it out.
UC Davis, Hero Sports, Hack City, The Bluebloods, Tubs at the Club (Vandals), Jackrabbit Illustrated (Jackrabbits pod) all good listen during the fall.

Would they tip their hand on any advantage they have? Does Sac State seem like they are above subterfuge? One thing is for sure, the go-go offense doesn’t play on the defensive side of the ball which will need to drastically improve.

I was surprised they didn’t do more to address their defense.

I am calling a massive upset weekend with 9/25 teams winning. I expect 5 of the top 10 to lose, maybe 6, but probably 5.

I expect the big Sky teams will go 3/6 games. Let the trolling begin.

1 North Dakota State-Easy win
2 Kittens - Lose Bad
3 South Dakota -Lose bad
4 South Dakota State - Look like they will be upset but then win by a field goal or less.
5 UIW (0-1) - Lose again
6 Illinois State - Lose Bad
7 Montana (0-0) OFF
8 UC Davis - Win easy
9 Rhode Island - Win
10 Tarleton State - Lose
11 Mercer - Win
12 Idaho - Lose
13 Villanova (0-0) OFF
14 Lehigh - Lose
15 Sacramento State - Look like they will upset SDSU, but then lose by a field goal or less
16 Abilene Christian - Lose
17 Jackson State - Win
18 Western Carolina - Lose
19 Northern Arizona - Lose
20 Southern Illinois - Win
21 Tennessee Tech - Win
22 Monmouth - Win
23 Stephen F. Austin - Lose
24 Stony Brook - Lose
25 Richmond - Win

Other Big Sky Conference Games
N. Colorado - Win
Weber St - Lose Bad
Cal Poly - Lose
Idaho St - Win big
PSU Get the life crushed out of them and Brigham Young drinks from their skulls.

What are the massive upsets?
1. Don't be surprised if NDSU struggles at The Citadel, remember they should have lost at ETSU but got luck to recover an onside kick and score twice inside the last two minutes to steal a win in Johnson City, TN.
2. Bozeman will lose at Oregon, that's not it.
3. South Dakota falls at Ames to Iowa State, not there.
4. SDSU will win against the new staff at Sac, okay.
5. UIW will find a way to beat EWU wearing them out in the nearly 100 humidity that will feel more like 103 or so at game time. That wouldn't be a massive upset if Eastern won though after last week in Thibodaux, LA.
6. Illinois State fall in Norman to Oklahoma.
7. Griz don't play, that is upsetting, to have an open week to start the year.
8. UC Davis should more than handle Utah (I want to know what's technical about it) Tech
9. Rhode Island should have no problem with Campbell
10. Tarleton State loses to Army
11. Mercer should handle Presbyterian, or any other team that would fall to Northern Colorado.
12. I'd like to say Idaho beats Wazzu, I'm just not feeling it for them though
13. Nova is also off, the only other FCS team not to play in week 0/1
14. Lehigh is at home for Richmond, and they are picked to win the Patriot League so I am going with that to say they beat Richmond, still not a big upset if Richmond wins
15. Sac St - did that
16. ACU will possibly give Tulsa a scare
17. Jackson State beats Hampton, and then watch out because a SWAC team beat a CAA member
18. Western Carolina will not lose at home to Gardner-Webb, still not a major upset if the fall
19. NAU falls to Arizona State like every other year between Arizona taking them down in the other every
20. SIU wins against Thomas More, whoever he is
21. Tennessee Tech does the same over Cumberland, not to be confused with University of the Cumberlands, as if it makes a difference
22. Monmouth should be able to win at Colgate
23. SFA won't win at Houston
24. Stony Brook loves long distance trips where they lose and this year that is San Diego State
25. Richmond - did that

We disagree on a couple of games, but I just don't get who are the huge upset you are call.

Not top 25, but due to familiarity of playing them before the tragedy and turnover they endured, Northwestern State just picked up their first win since 2022 by beating Alcorn State. 70 Freshman or Sophomore’s on their roster. Good for the Demons.
