2024 Montana opponents’ performance on 10/19

There has been a lot of talk on how far behind the curve Montana has fallen this year. But the 2024 record so far (minus the infuriating Weber loss) may indicate something different:

Missouri State - The Bears absolutely drubbed Indiana State this weekend 46-21. It seems Missouri State is on a bit of a tear right now following last week’s 41-7 beat down of #15 Illinois State.

North Dakota - This week the Hawks took UNI to the woodshed 31-7. Yes I know Montana lost this game…nonetheless UND has proven to be a quality opponent in 2024.

Morehead State - The Eagles actually won this weekend, besting Presbyterian 14-7. Yeah it’s a non-scholarship league, but Morehead has managed a winning record so far.

Western Carolina - These guys don’t suck. They hammered a much weakened Furman team 52-20 and Gonzales is really starting to shine. I think they beat Mercer next week and have a shot at the So Con title.

Eastern Washington - Loses 48-38 to UCD. I watched this game and they came back in the second half to give Davis a scare. But ultimately Eastern’s defense is awful and even the seizure-inducing field didn’t in help them with a W.

Weber - Weber, Weber. The cats took Sac St to double overtime before losing 51-48 in Sacramento. Still not sure what to think about Weber, but their offense might not be totally awful.

Northern Arizona - Overcomes an early deficit to win 30-26 over a not terrible Idaho State who is accustomed to playing in domes.

Overall every team Montana has played with the exception of Morehead is playing decent football, and Western Carolina and Missouri State are playing excellent football. It’s been a weird start to the season, but I think Montana has faced some real tests so far. I’m optimistic

Good try.

A post I made a hour earlier:

The schedules we’ve played aren’t even comparable.

Missouri State: is 5-2 in the MVFC (3-0 in conference) and their ONLY other loss is FBS.
North Dakota: is 5-2 in the MFVC (2-1 in conference) with their only loss to likely #1 NDSU and we led them 24-7 at the half then inexplicably shit the bed.
WCU: is 4-3 and undefeated since losing to UM. They’re 3-0 and in first place in the Southern Conference, and their QB just put up 620 passing yards—in ONE game—against Wofford.
Morehead St: is 4-3 and 2-1 in the Pioneer.
Eastern: may be 2-5, but they followed up our game by putting 35 on Sac (W) and 38 on Davis (L)
Weber….ok, they suck at 3-5 and losers to UNC. Were they our “NAU” game this year?
NAU: 4-4 and 2-2 in conference - they’re no slouch again this year.

So our combined opponent record is 28-24. MSU’s opponents’ combined record is 19-40.

We lamented our performance against some of these teams early, but it turns out our OOC was a LOT tougher than we gave them credit for, and it wasn’t just them playing their Super Bowl against the Griz. THey’re actually pretty good teams this year. We know EWU is ALWAYS a shootout (hell, we hadn’t wont there in 14 years) and the D came back and played lights out against NAU.

So, I ask again: Was Weber our “NAU” game this year? We’re gonna beat UNC and CP and come out of week 9 7-2 and then we finish with Davis at home, PSU at home and then at the ‘Scats. 9-3, a seed and multiple home games is not out of the realm of possibility.

Good post AZ! If everything goes as planned, November 9 against Davis has the potential to be a huge game. They have their bye next week, and then they host UNC before coming to Missoula. They could be ranked as high as #4 in the country by the time that game rolls around since South Dakota is most likely going to lose to SDSU next week. The Griz should get into the Top 10 this week with Nova and Mercer both losing to unranked teams.

I’m confident the team worked on things over the bye week and will have a chance to perfect any schematic changes against UNC and Poly before Davis comes to town. Should be an exciting month of November!

You need to remember, we’re idiots for thinking that the Griz can be good. Face it, we suck.

As noted by Villanova and Mercer's losses to unranked teams, we can't look past UNC, Cal Poly SLO, and Portland State --while these are probable wins, they aren't slam dunks, and the upset snake is still lurking in the weeds for overconfident teams !!!

I love the optimism. Hope it is correct. Do the Griz actually have the personnel on defense to get it done? I hope so, but I remain very skeptical. In my tiny little brain, I look at two things. Is the quality of opponents and the end result an indicator that the U of M can win the BSC and a national title? Quality of opponents and the end result with each would tell us the answer is no at this point in the season. Dominant wins over competitive teams isn’t happening. Lots of 4th quarter heart attacks.

Good try.

Hauck said it himself last season, that the teams he builds aren’t designed to pull away and run up huge scores. This year’s offense might be a bit different, but the idea is to come away with a W however it may happen. Most worrisome to me this season has been special teams play. The back-breaking returns just haven’t been there and kick return coverage hasn’t been spectacular.
