Your QB also had nothing to do with our three man rush getting on him with regularity. The QB also had little to do with our stuffing your running game all day.uofmman1122 said:What does that have to do with the 2023 iterations of UC Davis and Weber State? You beat our awful backup QB by 3 points. Congrats.
You guys just replaced the best coach you've ever had. There should be healthy skepticism before expecting people to think you won't skip a beat.
There is always a little uncertainty with a coaching change, but usually that comes with a complete change in the staff. We lost one guy. He was one of the best FB coaches ever at WSU, but still just one guy. His replacement was on staff and all of the rest of the staff stayed on. Things are not changing. There is no expected drop off in Ogden. You would be wise to not discount our prospects. We will know a lot more after we play our first league game with the Bobs. We win that game and everyone's opinions will change over night.
Having a backup QB that was no threat through the air made the offense pretty one dimensional and predictable. Not too hard to stuff the run when you can load up the box on first and second down and come hard on 3rd down without worrying about a screen, draw, or scramble with an immobile QB. Not being able to sustain drives directly contributed to lack of TOP and more time the defense is on the field. They wore down and you’re guys were able to run the ball and grind the clock. I think O’Connell ended up getting banged up at the end of the first half if I remember correctly. Shit rolls down hill and you can see the trickle starts with the QB and the flood gates slowly opened. However, injuries are part of the game though and quality teams need to be able to overcome them. Catching us at home after 2 losses, especially the way the Sac State game went down had more to do with the loss than one QB.
As far as your two big plays. One was a busted coverage by our all American Corner. Doing exactly what he was coached to do. That was a great bit of film work and coaching on your OC’s part to identify and exploit it at a critical moment. I don’t recall the other off the top of my head.
