2023 Non Conference Schedule

We have no buisness playing Ferris State, nothing against them but I'd rather play an FBS team on the road then a D2, hurts us for the Playoffs

Also hurts with attendance... If people are going to skip a game it's going to be this one. Who wants the expense of travel for this opponent?

It may hurt attendance, but it generally doesn't hurt ticket revenue.

This is based on zero fact.
My understanding is that games against D2 opponents don't count in a FCS team's record when the playoff committee is counting up win totals for who gets the at-large bids. If I have it correct then playing D2 teams could hurt a teams playoff chances.

Not saying we shouldn't or should or anything, just saying I think that is how it works. Apologies (like a true Canadian) if I'm wrong.

Sask, scheduling a D2 doesn't inherently hurt. If a team ends up be borderline to the point the D2 is the deciding factor of whether or not it gets into the playoffs, then I would suggest that scheduling the D2 isn't their biggest issue.

An example of double talk. In fact, scheduling a Div2 can hurt your chances of getting in, so why schedule one?

Why, because they couldn't find a FCS opponent. Scheduling a D2 is a last ditch effort to fill the date. When it comes right down to it, scheduling a D2 isn't much different than scheduling a FBS in 99% of the cases.

With 130 schools in FCS, hard to believe Haslam can’t find one to schedule.

You really think Haslam scheduled a D2 with FCS options?

I'd still take a road FBS opponent with a payday over a Home D2 school, especially against some regional MWC schools like WYO, BSU, USU ect.

I think Spanky expects a FBS, NDSU, and SDSU every year. Anything less is soft.

I wouldn't necessarily want that, personally I feel it should be more like for example: WAC/Southland school, FBS game, San Diego/Pioneer

Well what it “should be” and what it “actually is” are many many times two very different things. I mean we schedule two MVFC teams and a Southland team and it’s viewed as “soft”. There’s no winning, honestly, with some people.

Haslam is going to schedule 6 home games every season because of finances. He has no problem playing an occasional FBS game, but it won't be at the expense of a home game.

Yeah have 0 issues with this seasons Non-Conference schedule, I just don't see how we (Montana) routinely considered one of the best FCS programs can't get a pure D1 lineup, we should be able to not schedule D2 teams. If finances are an issue then maybe try to set up a series with some of the bigger FBS programs, granted not to the level of EWU.

The only way the Ferris St game goes away is if they could find a FCS school that would travel to Missoula. Trading a home game for a FBS is a non-starter.

Well to be fair EVERY FBS game is in lieu of another home game, really.

To be fair, it is in lieu of a FCS road game. 2 home OOC games is a staple.
