2023 Non Conference Schedule

Spanky, I think this is less about whom they have played and more about how they have played and the lack of execution. Good teams will win no matter the opponent.

Helena, do you think this is true in an individual sport? Tennis, for example.

Yes, but not to the same degree. There is a big difference from a team sport, where you are only as strong as your weakest link, and an individual sport.

My view is that in a sport like Tennis, it is more important to play more top competition in the season, including early. In football, it is better to play easier games earlier in the season to learn and develop, to make adjustments, to develop depth of non-starters, and to come out of it healthy. At some point, it is important to play top competition, but not necessarily early. In FCS football, with playoffs, as Bobby has said for years, he wants his team hitting on all cylinders by early November. He doesn't like his team having to get up for big games early, and potentially peaking too soon. When the later season is on and competition is better and winning becomes more important, he will then ride his top players, like Chase Reynolds. Earlier, he would want Chase to be fresher, and not to get dinged up.

Ok wise guy, it isn’t unusual for teams to cancel and reschedule which you could know. Regarding the home and home with Dixie State, it was ridiculous to have made the commitment from the day it was made.
It would be extremely unusual (and incredibly shitty) for a team to cancel their entire OOC schedule less than a year before the games are supposed to be played, and we likely won't be able to find 3 quality opponents to also cancel a game each so we can be accommodated.
Not to mention the stiff buy-out financial penalties.

What about the travel costs to St. George, Utah?

So if I understand you, when you play a schedule of Crème Puffs, you shouldn’t be shocked when your team plays like a Crème Puff as we did in the Idaho game.

St. George has an airport. Plus it's just a hop, skip and jump from Vegas. It isnt nearly the trouble to get to that SUU was.

Yeah, but it's super creepy. It's the kind of place where you want to tell people to blink twice if they're in trouble.

No arguments here

Helena, I agree that good teams should play well no matter the opponent. However, there is a tendency to play down to the level of the opposing team, then when you play a good team they aren’t accustomed to a higher level of play.

Spanky, I think kids in this program over the past few years are accustomed to big games and a higher level of play. I guess we will find out if Idaho was a bad game or if the Griz aren't as good as people thought. I am more curious to see how they execute than what the final score ends up, as that will be more predictive to the rest of the season. But I call bullshit on your theory that you must play better teams to be better and believe that execution is the difference between being above average and being great. The Griz executed poorly against Idaho.

I fully support his bullshit theory that playing preseason cupcakes does very little to help a team. Theoretically the only benefit is getting your young players quality time on the field. However, since it is the preseason, the starters are typically left in for most, if not all, of the game so they can develop a rhythm. That said I fully support your statement that the Grizzlies played very poorly versus Idaho while the Vandal's QB was playing lights out. It was the team's first test of the season and they failed it. Time for redemption tomorrow night. Go Griz!

The last two years we went to the national championship, we played D2 teams in both years and had weak opponents outside of that.

EWU has played the toughest schedule of any FCS team so far (a schedule that Spanky wants us to emulate), and they're fucked 6 games into the season.

Good teams tend to be good regardless of their schedule. I very much doubt a tough schedule can take an okay team and turn them into a great team.

Here’s the problem, many times when scheduling you dont’ KNOW that 3-4 years down the line those teams are going to be cupcakes. I mean, FFS we scheduled two MVFC teams this year! When this schedule was finalized I’m sure most fans thought it was gonna be a brutal path/schedule.

I don't think it matters much. The conference is tough enough right now. That was not always the case, but the grind of the conference schedule this year will prepare the Griz for the playoffs...should they get in.

The BSC is half good teams and half cream puffs. It's only a grind when the unbalanced schedule disfavors you.

Good point. Guess I should have clarified...this season.

While this is true, there have been years where it wasn’t close to half/half. More like 70/30. Back when it was Griz, Scats and EWU, and then everybody else. And with those two teams being Griz annual opponents that’s how you get the likes of SUU winning conference titles. With Weber, Sac and now Idaho leveling up, it makes it a bit more difficult to dodge ALL the good teams, but your point remains. Some teams get easier schedules than others.

And i hate that.

We have no buisness playing Ferris State, nothing against them but I'd rather play an FBS team on the road then a D2, hurts us for the Playoffs
