2015 Griz D = One of FCS Best!?!

PlayerRep said:
I started saying several months ago that the D would be as good as last year, and had the potential to be better. Now that practices have started I feel the same, and am starting to think there is more potential to be better than what I had thought after spring ball. So far, there has been strong play out of the backers, D-line and secondary, and there seems to be considerable depth. Gamboa had a couple terrific plays in space today. Too bad he won't be on the field in the first game. There are alot of guys making plays from the secondary. Coverage has seemed to be good. I can't tell how consistent the secondary has been, tho

You were wrong then as you will be during the season

You would probably disagree if someone called you a contrarian.

Is the Defense that good or is the Offense that far behind?

well the D was pretty good last year and all things for me pointed to it being better this year...so I don't think its just based on what its doing to our offense the last few days. Our corners are big, tall, athletic, and possibly go 2-deep without any drop-off. By all accounts the 6'4" safety transfer from AZ will contribute immediately and is physically someone we don't see much at this level, we have a whole bunch of really good linebackers, Ty and Legi are back again, almost all of the defense returns from last year, we lost Takai but essentially replaced him with Kidder who was out last year and has All American potential. We lost Hermey and got Manu and Yamen. Whitted appears healthy, so we have a solid two deep there as well. I could keep going but at some point it makes sense why our D looks really good. It's kind of been building up to this for awhile and the addition of Yamen might have been the cherry on top. I'm not sure why anyone would be surprised. I would only be surprised if they weren't that good.

Yeah sorry for keeping it real

"We'll find out in three weeks against an offense that dominated us last year..." Not trying to start an argument but I dont feel that the defense got "dominated" by NDSU last year. No doubt that NDSU had a stack of run yds... however, alot of yards came late after the D was worn out from being on the field too much. Griz D was very competitive earlier in the game.

You DO realize that wearing down the opposing defense is the specific strategy and how the Bison beat just about everyone else, right? Our defense consistently gets off of the field quickly and lets the offense slowly, ever-so-slowly, pound the opposing defense. The entire strategy for the last 4-1/2 years has been based on this principle. That's why it was so awesome for some of us Bison faithful to witness the last drive in Frisco last year. It was unexpected...at least from me.

It will be interesting to see how our team stacks up this year. Given the strategy above, and the fact that our defense will be quite untested when they arrive in Missoula, Frankly, I don't think many Bison fans really see the significant potential gaping hole that the departure of our safeties and linebackers will cause. I'm pretty worried about it. I can't help but think that our offensive output might be somewhat compromised due to the change of strategy needed. But heck, if this great offense can keep on the field, it'll help the defense keep rested.

Frankly, I'm not sure what to think about this year's Bison team. It is going to be fun. I'm glad to have a ticket to Wash-Griz in 3 weeks!

BTW - thanks to those that welcomed me last year when I happened to be in Missoula to watch the Bison-Griz game at a bar downtown.

Good post. Do you think this may be the best offensive line the Bison have had? They sure seem to have all the pieces in place.

Yeah, they're really big, fast, smart, and mean MF'ers. At least one draft pick but a couple of other guys that will turn some heads. Andrew Bonnett is a beast as well. Our TE's and WR's are all great at blocking as well. Obviously, Wentz is a stud and his backup is also very good. I think that the only real question on offense will be at RB. I've never been sold on Frazier and Morlock is okay. The real question to me will be Lance Dunn. He's just a redshirt freshman but certainly looks the part. He tore up our defense in the spring game. He will eventually break through but not sure if it is reasonable to expect him to do so on his very first game. That said, my slow 44-year-old, fat self might be able to get 1,000 yards with this blocking talent.

FWIW - I'm concerned about the kicking game. Our punter will be our kicker. That'll also mean that we'll have to break in a new holder since he had those duties last year. Not sure if this is the best thing for the future.

When I watched the game at Red's last year, the guys next to me were pretty funny, praying every time the Griz kicking game was on the field. Is that going to be improved?

(Sorry if this is thread drift since this thread is about the Griz D. Mods can move or delete if need be...)

I thought about moving this thread into the "Sane Discussion Forum" but I couldn't find it.

Yeah, Mods? WTF? Why are you allowing ACTUAL football talk in this forum?

Football talk and with a decent oponent visiting on our site. EGriz is becoming a nice place to play.

Or it could be it's because the season is ON. I was worried we were becoming a Mo Club advertisement.

Odds are with N. Dakota. However the Griz might be up to the task. We want to come out growling and snarling and smart. We need to make few mistakes and if that happends we could pull off the up-set.

As I stated previously, we don't have a forum for that...

To be cliche, it's all about adjustments. Major adjustments to a new offense and during the games. I totally respect Mick-he was my hitch school coach (I sucked), but his adjustments throughout the season and and games were marginal. We have a coach who...well...we don't know yet. We have a new offense. The defense is going to be faster and better-especially the secondary! A great secondary will help the d-line in coverage sacks! I don't agree with posters saying our d-line is weaker.
The offense will obviously have to gradually catch up! But to come out and say the offense will suck-like most posters are saying-is really ignorant and pessimistic! Yeah, it's a new scheme-but, it's a new scheme the whole BSC is going to have to learn. Our time of possession may be less at first-MAY BE-but to assume the offense won't be there is, basically saying, we have no faith in the new regime! I'm so f&@$ing tired of the negativity!
Truth-be-told, my son dressed up in his Griz gear today-eight years old-and we were playing catch at Bonner park. He jumped up to catch a pass, came down on his right hand to break his fall, and broke his arm in two places-ulna and radius! He says every year, "the Griz are gonna be great!" Optimism! Just a kid, but friggin' cheers, no matter what. He's a fan! The pontificators that frequent this place-me included-are cynics who second guess every decision, and have nothing better to do but write to hear themselves think. Been a tough day-hanging out in the emergency room for 4 hours, watching my sons arm be reset! Woke up talking about the game. That's a football. Thanks for letting me vent.
