2013 Schedule is out

This sounds like excuses(well reasoned and written) by a "unnamed source within the athletic department." Why won't the new AD come out and say who approved of OPSU? Poor choice. Schedules do change, OPSU, so I wouldn't gas up the bus just yet.

Falsehoods:

1. OPSU is in an NAIA conference. The conference they were affiliated with no longer exists. They are an independent DII program with free reign to schedule any team they please. They have been NCAA DII for ten plus years and compete in the Heartland Conference for every other program except football. If Western New Mexico and Lincoln had not left the Heartland Conference, they would be playing in that conference now.

2. OPSU is about the worst DII program in the nation. Speaking of independent DII programs, there are four currently: OPSU, North Greenville, UNC Pembroke, and SD Mines. UNC Pembroke and OPSU dominate the statistical scene within the independents. UNC Pembroke and North Greenville were playoff teams in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

Facts:

1. You mention Western State and Chadron State. OPSU beat New Mexico Highlands in 2010, who defeated Western State the same season. In mentioning Chadron State, there was a reference to CSU-Pueblo (the #1 program in the nation the last two years - end of regular season) beating Chadron State this season. In 2010, OPSU played CSU-Pueblo (9-2) to within a called-back returned punt for a touchdown (illegal substitution, not an illegal block or hold). Outgained them (CSU-Pueblo) in yardage and gained more first downs - shot themselves (OPSU) in the foot with 160 yards in penalties.

2. Beat NWOSU last year by overcoming a 21 point deficit in the 4th quarter. NWOSU is the fourth most #1 ranked team in NAIA history behind USF, Carroll, and either St. Xavier/St. Francis. USF crucified UND in 2009 or 2010, while still NAIA.

3. OPSU has been capable of beating Dixie State the last four seasons. Didn't Dixie State come within a field goal of beating Griz/Cats within the last 3-4 years...um, the glory years???

Fact: OPSU is 4-6 this year playing 7 NAIA teams, their 4 wins were all over NAIA teams,

Facts:

1. OPSU was 21 points away from 8-2 in 2012.

2. Last year, OPSU gave away 21 points on special team mistakes to Missouri S&T, who led 31-0 at half. Second half, OPSU came tearing back, on the back of special team play, to outscore MST 21-3. A botched onside kick kept OPSU from late tie. MST beat Lindenwood, and Lindenwood humiliated Northern Colorado, and Bears played Cats almost dead even.

A lot of transitivity here, but the point is, given the right circumstances, Griz may not be that disparate from Ag, especially when the third head coach in as many years gets to do his own recruiting, starting in 3, 2, 1...

This year Idaho State lost to UC Davis by only one touchdown. Most likely due to a silly turnover. UC Davis played MSU down to the wire - almost dead even. MSU beat Sac State who beat Cal Poly. Cal Poly beat Wyoming who beat Idaho. Idaho was within a touchdown of LSU right before halftime. LSU dang near knocked off Alabama. So it stands to reason that Idaho State, with zero D-1 wins is dang near the best team in the land.

The point is not to use transitivity to claim a program which is not the best actually is. No. The point is that playing a DII team, which is not truly garbage, is a benign thing. OPSU pounds some NAIA programs, and they struggle with others. Those pounded were likely grateful for the chance to compete with an NCAA program in an attempt to move their program upstream. Those OPSU struggles with will soon be pounded with the help of a program like Griz.

Man some Griz fans starting to sound like whiny cat fans. Ahh man have to play NDU 3 times away get over it. As for OPSU they get a chance to play the Griz not something most get to do. As far as six away and six home games I’m just happy to play twelve games total.
