Two good articles on Taylor Walcott & Hayden Craig...solid players

I think solid players is a pretty big understatement for these two. These guys are two of our top 5 recruits IMO. I think both will play as true Freshman and both will be starting next year (2013).

Thanks for posting these

There is another nice tidbit buried within Walcott's article about future Griz Tyrone Holmes - another excellent prospect.

The South's defensive line dominated, led by Eagle Point's Tyrone Holmes, who recorded 3.5 sacks and 7.5 total tackles.

The South pitched the first shutout in the Les Schwab Bowl since 1988.

"I think the main part was that we came together as a team," Holmes said. "We had great team chemistry and great coaches. "This game really meant a lot for the South players to show who's best in the state."

Sweet. Cant wait to see all these guys in griz uniforms. I know this isnt directly related to the topic, but how do you think our recruiting might change with Pflu gone? That was Pflu's forte IMO. Not that i did'nt like Hauk's recruits, just felt like Pflu was bringing in maybe a bit better talent.

The answer to that depends on if Engstrom allows Delaney to become the permanent Head Coach, at least through the 2013 season. If the coaching staff's status is a mystery during the season, this will hurt Griz recruiting. Maybe even significantly. Interim Head Coaches are never a good idea. Pflugrad was the right man for the job, IMO, and Mick Delaney is the right man for the job now. Give Delaney a contract through 2013.

Recruits choose schools because of coaches. You can talk about campus and academics all you want but there are a lot of great campuses and schools. Recruits build relationships with the coaches who recruit them and it's pretty tough to commit when you don't know if he will ever even coach you. I would argue that coaches are the number 1 reason why most college football recruits choose their school, at least nationally amoungst the BCS conferences.

To me the bigger issue is do we still have contacts in Oregon....

Wonder how much we've talked to that new Sheldon QB

Good observation. I haven't thought of that yet, but you're right. With Pflu, Beers, and Smith gone I don't know if we have someone with Oregon connections. Maybe the Dline coach.

Lurch? Aric Williams played at Oregon St. Heard some (maybe just a few) Oregon high schools/coaches were irked at UM for firing Pflu, and indicating they weren't going to recommend UM to their recruits.

Well there you go. Except Williams is the primary California recruiter. Roots, Canada, Nate Harris all talked about Coach Williams when they committed

Who was the primary recruiter(s) for Walcott, Holmes, Craig, and Johnson?
Beers and Gragg probably. I was being an idiot when I forgot about Gragg. Pflugrad is a family friend of Johnsons. The position coaches always talk to the recruits too, obviously. So who knows who the "primary" guy is. I just remember those cali guys talking about williams. I think Baker does most of the recruting in Arizona

Baker showed Walcott around Missoula. Baker does AZ and northern CA. He also goes to So CA at times, although someone else covers So Ca. I think it's Longhi (sp?).

That's my fear....been a good pipeline out of OR the past couple years...hate to see it dry up like the HI pipeline did for quite a while...

As for recruiting areas, I am hoping the loss of Pflu will not hurt Oregon a lot. Fortunately, Robin is still an advocate of Montana football. Probably just not a fan of Engstrom, and whomever made the night mare happen for Pflu. Also, we have great coaches/people still on staff with strong Oregon ties.

On the brightside, we are adding some presence in TX, IA, and midwest. Those areas certainly cannot hurt. We tend to get stronger in more areas every passing year.

The annual Les Schwab Bowl is typically reserved for the top high school football players from the biggest programs.

Someone forgot to tell Dayton's Hayden Craig, the first player in the Les Schwab Bowl's 65-year history to attend a 3A school.

Yeah. He might be good.
