OK - first the mandatory question about why the _____ we try and play any sport in Montana in the spring, but that is a discussion for another day.

Who will be the teams to beat in 2011 in the Montana Legion Season?

Any thoughts? Both AA and A?

No idea on Legion but as far as spring...I umpire MSU-B baseball and I can tell you one thing...it's be fukking miserable.

A couple weeks ago I had a 3pm double header, froze my nutz off the 2nd game. Needless to say, last weekends DH's started @ 1pm.

Back to Legion, Missoula loaded again?

FYI, NW Regionals in Billings the next 2 years.

Missoula is good but very, very young. Helena, Bozeman both hit the ball well. Pitching will be their potential weakness. Butte is better than in the past.

Great Falls is good. Not having Olson and Bleskin hurt some, but they will still be a force. I haven't seen or heard much about the Royals, but they are always solid. No idea about the Canadian teams, as they are still playing high school baseball (what a novel concept).

The team to beat this year is clearly the Scarlets. I believe they only lost 2-3 kids off of last years team. Should be interesting this weekend when Missoula goes to Billings. Billings should win those, but it is baseball. Oh, and then there is that 2-4" of rain that is supposed to fall between tonight and Saturday night. How well does Dehler Park drain? :)

I worked 1 GF/Scarlets game and a GF/Royals DH. Billings teams won all 3 that I worked. I think the Scarlets swept and the Royals won 3 of 4 vs GF.

These are the only 3 Legion teams I've seen this year.

W/ that said, I think GF will be there come the end of July. Good kids, great coach.

The Royals only have 14 on their AA roster. Benjamin will be back once he's done w/ college. They lost 4 of 5 at Rapid City--not a huge surpise, RC is GOOD. I think I read in the Gazette that all but 1 guy on the Royals roster can pitch.

I believe the Scarlets are undefeated. They will be solid--very fundamentally sound w/ very good pitching/defense. Once again they'll rely on their speed. Small ball!

I doubt you'll be playing at Dehler this weekend. 1) I doubt there will be any baseball played & 2) If there are games this weekend I'd be willing to bet the powers to be @ Dehler will have the games moved to Pirtz (Behind the mall).

I haven't been following much legion...How is "Hollywood" Anderson and his Butte team doing this year?

Butte is doing ok this year, ups and downs...swept the defending state champs (Missoula Mavericks) once in a double-header, but then has lost some games they could have won.

Butte only has 2 dominent players, power hitting short stop Matt Berg and college pitcher Bryon Baker. 1B/P Buzzy Davies can hit and pitches ok too. The rest of the team is, in general, kinda young. In fact one pitcher in the rotation is 15 year old Kieffer Hepola.

Butte hosts this years state tournament. Butte may (or may not) do "ok" at state, their problem is no depth at pitching behind Bryon Baker.

Hollywood is still Hollywood.

State AA Tourney Matchups 7/27/11
10am Helena Senators/Great Falls Chargers
1pm Billings Royals/Medicine Hat Monarchs
4pm Billings Scarlets/Kalispell Lakers
7pm Missoula Mavericks/Butte Miners

Holy smokes, Missoula came out of nowhere to win the west. :thumb:

Yeah, the Mavs went on a run. Still could play better, but seem to be peaking at the right time.

I am not sure the times are right. According to the bracket at http://www.mtabbaseball.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; the Mavs and Scarlets are in the same bracket. That shouldn't be the case. I think the 3rd game should be the Royals game.

I can't imagine the organizers from Butte intentionally put both #1 seeds in the same bracket with Butte?????

Yeah, that doesn't look right. I'm guessing Butte's playing the last game opening night since they're home.

Brackets are right now. Mavs and Butte play the last game on Wednesday night. And the Scarlets are on the other side of the bracket.

It doesn't sound like Pistorese will be ready to go against the Scarlets for Kalispell, as he pitched a complete game on Sunday. Too bad. That would be a fun matchup to watch.
