My guess is he was some type of student manager (video, equipment, etc.). Might have even been a cheerleader. They basically give out a ring to everyone connected with the program. Given the description states that "they" beat Furman and the Griz went 15-1 etc. indicates he was probably not a player or he would have said "we" went 15-1 and beat Furman. I know its hard to understand because most Griz fans refer to themselves as "we" when they speak about the team, but unless you played it really is weird to say "we."

It's too bad that you are having financial problems and have to part ways with something from your past that likely has some meaning to it. I hope things turn around for you and everything works out.
