Is there an equivalent of BWahlberg for the Basketball Board, to publish an overview of the upcoming season? I saw a few regulars at the gym during July- it would be great to hear from them, if they are on this board.
I'll provide my observations to get things during started:
Travis wants to play fast, possibly with 2 point guards. Based on that I'd guess our starting lineup will be:
Oguine, Wright, GFeller, Breunig and Krslovic. Dunn will of course be back in the starting lineup as soon as possible.
Oguine fit in immediately and looks to me like he is going to live up to the hype. He's quick, fearless and can score from the point. He handles the ball well, and while it is a big ask to expect a true freshman to run the point- he looks up to it. He will be an immediate fan favorite. While it is early, I do think he has the ability to pick up the early season scoring slack from Dunn, but I'd expect a drop-off in defensive intensity.
Wright can help with the ball handing duties and has shown the ability to score in streaks. Bradshaw could get this starting spot too, but I think Wright's ability to share the ball handling with Oguine makes him a better fit at the beginning of the season. Bradshaw would be a solid 6th-7th man and he has shown the ability to make contributions when he plays with confidence. I can't say whether Wright or Bradshaw helps us more on defense, but that could be a key in determining which one starts. We have a very hard pre-season schedule which might mean TDC experiments with the starting line-up a bit, and I can see these two both getting a chance to earn this spot.
GFeller and Breunig should lead the team in points and minutes. Both have developed a lot in the off-season. Both of these guys present match up troubles for the opposition as they have become versatile scorers. Look for Breunig to improve on his 17 points per game last year, and GFeller to pick up many of the shots and points that went to Gregory last season. GFeller gets my early nomination for Rule's Jordan Gregory Award as the most improved in the off-season. Breunig is as versatile as any player in the league, and I am anxious to see how TDC uses him this season. Moving him to point-forward at critical stretches last season was brilliant, and helped us secure a couple key wins.
Krlsovik is solid in the middle and looks to have developed offensively, with improved footwork. He showed signs of his offensive ability last year, but his biggest contribution is defensively. He looks stronger this year, and anchors us defensively. He isn't as athletic as Breunig, but he is fundamentally solid and has a knack for being around the ball and creating turnovers.

Depth:
We are going to need strong pre-season contributions from 2 players beyond the 6 listed above. Those in line to provide these contributions are Lopez, Boehning and DeJong. Boehning is our only true center and I see him playing key minutes in stretches where we go big (like vs Gonzaga). He looks much stronger than last year, so it appears his red-shirt season helped him. Lopez plays good defense and rebounds well for his size, but I haven't seen him be a scoring threat yet. A good start to the season could provide him more confidence on O, which could help take some of the pressure off of Breunig, GFeller and Oguine. DeJong is athletic and could be a good fit for an up-tempo game.
I don't have any insights as to whether the other players will red-shirt or not, but believe Rorie will really help our new point guards develop which will be critical once we get into the Conference schedule. The competition at the point next year will be intense! I had the impression Moorehead would likely redshirt when he signed, but maybe things have changed due to the loss of Edmonds and the injury to Mario.

There are still almost 3 months until the season starts so things can change between now and then. I'm impressed with the improvements the coaches have developed in the players. Player development appears to be a real strength of our coaching staff, which bodes well for the future of the program.

The perfect equivalent for BWahlberg is you, Long Gone! Thanks for the excellent first-look/ pre-season perspective.... posted at the perfect time (the day before football season practice starts). Hope this is a nice, long thread with insight from all of the regulars.

A couple of questions for anyone who might know:
• With the departure of Edmonds, it seems to me that there are two at-present undesignated scholarships. One will surely go to Rorie, when he registers for school. Does the second scholarship go to DeJong? If not, is there an un-announced additional player anyone's heard about (who might, of course, address the depth issue). Not a word from any source regarding Trevor Spoja. Is he a walk on? or a scholarship frosh? Or is my counting off?
• I knew that Dunn had undergone hand surgery, but assumed he'd be ready for the start of practice. Any news on his status?

Journal-
Unfortunately Mario is out for most of the pre-season. I got that at one of the practices, so it is reliable.
I believe Spoja is a walk-on but don't know for sure.

According to Verbal Commits, Jakub Nizioł (from Poland) has commited to the Griz. Does he have the thirteenth scholarship? Will he be here for the 2015 season? I have not seen anything official on him. He did just finish playing for the Polish U20 National team.

I just moved back to Missoula. Between my new job working me hard with a lot of hours, helping my brother remodel his place, and getting situated, time has been hard to come by. I will be checking out open gyms, practices, etc when time is available.

Longgone, great pre season prveview. I will add more thoughts after I have I watched them play some open gyms. As for a few questions asked. I spoke to Mario Dunn this summer, he assured me he will be 100% come 1st practice. He told me the DR thought he would be a go as soon as mid August to early September. Dunn was pretty jacked for the season to get here, and has a Will Cherry like confidence/demeanor.

I hear great things about Gfeller's off season. Expect him to have improved ball handling, and finishing in the paint to be improved.

I can tell you the staff and players I spoke to this summer, absolutely love Walter Wright's game. He is capable of dishing out a lot of assists, and scoring. Basically he can take over a game offensively quite easily, at least that is what I've been told.

Oguinne starts the season more of a wild card. His minutes and role will depend on how quickly he picks up the college game and learns the games of his teammates. I expect Travis to use him as a combo guard. I feel his minutes will increase gradually with the season, very similar to how Cherry, Jamar, Dunn, and Krslovic were brought along.

As for Niziol, there is a reason the GRIZ have not officially announced him yet. I warned everyone there needed to be some further decisions made when his GRIZ future begins. That will likely be up in the air for a little longer. I don't know the specifics, but am guessing his status will be determined by the progress of our other SG's and SF's. Also, it is common for Euros to take an extra year for their game to better prepare for Div 1 basketball. Euros don't rush their player development, and are a little more patient. Also, I have a feeling a lot will be riding on how much Gfeller can handle for minutes and production? Secondly, will Lopez and Moorehead be significant contributors when Gfeller needs rest? Ideally, Niziol gets another year of developing his game, without using a redshirt year this season.

Right now, my guess is that Niziol will not be part of the GRIZ until 2016, and Dejong will get a scholarship for this season.

Right now, I am thinking how well Gfeller and Boehning do this season will be the biggest keys for the GRIZ. Will Gfeller be able to become an all conference player this season? Will Boehning prove to be a key paint defender, rebounder, post scorer, and physical presence this GRIZ team so surely needs him to be? If those 2 can answer "YES" to those questions, then the GRIZ will be a conference title contender this season.

I cannot wait to get to see these guys play in the open gyms. Be patient though. My life is pretty chaotic right now.

here's what i'm excited about this year.
1. oguine: period. the most heralded recruit in ages.
2. wright: another key recruit.
3. gfeller and krslovic. every year one or more of the underclassmen has a breakout year, and really improves his game. gregory did it every year. of course, micheal ray did it big time years ago, and krysko was way better as a sophomore than as a freshman. hopeful one or both of these guys does it this year.
4. breunig. a professional career beckons. there's incentive for a big senior year.
5. a surprise! (bradshaw? boehning? bradshaw? moorehead?

From a Missoula sports journalist friend of mine: Dunn has had a second surgery on his hand, will be out for sure until January, and will probably redshirt.

Your information is more current than mine. I spoke to Dunn in mid June. Wow, that does change a lot of things. It sounds to me that Bradshaw will be much more relied on than most were expecting this season. Fortunately the GRIZ are loaded at the point. That puts Wright as the main PG, with Oguinne, and Bradshaw getting time as combo guards. If Dunn is out, that allows for Breunig to be a point forward, which we did a few games last season with him.

I hope to see these guys play sooner than later. :thumb:

I've expected alot more from Lopez. He had a pretty good high school resume coming in playing with and against some pretty top lever talent(Dante Exum). I would hope he is one of those guys to really elevate his game this year.
