The Griz had a dominating 11-game streak heading into the game in Bozeman, and the Bobcats had some of the saddest fans around.
• As the first half ended, MSU was whistled for having too many men on the field, which gave Montana one extra play. The Griz scored a touchdown on a long TD pass by Brian Ah Yat to end the half.
• With 22 seconds left in the game, MSU took a 25–24 lead on a three-yard run. Bobcat fans everywhere rejoiced that their sad long losing streak was finally ending. At 25–24, the Bobcats had to try for a two-point conversion, but are stopped on “the one-inch line.”
—So, had the Bobcats gotten another inch and scored the conversion, the Griz would have then had to go for a touchdown to win the game.
—Note that the Bobcats had failed on three extra point attempts prior to this, which would’ve given them a 28-24 lead after this last touchdown — and would have forced Montana to go for a touchdown to win the game, instead of a field goal.
• The 1997 Griz team was one of the worst in the country for kickoff returns. So, what do the Bobcats do? Kick it out of bounds, of course, to give the Griz the ball on the 35 yard line — and no time expired on the play!
• Ah Yat throws a huge 46-yard bomb to Olsen to get Montana into field goal range.
• With 8 seconds to play, the snap is fumbled but recovered.
• With 4 seconds to play, Kris Heppner sets up for a field goal attempt. The ball is snapped, and he kicks a 38-yard field goal as time expires, giving Montana the 27–25 win. Sad Bobcat fans are even sadder.
