1 week from fall camp: position battles

with the coach having a lot of experience with running backs, do you see us sliding in two tight ends and just cramming the ball down everyone's throat and passing for surprise?
Mick said in Billings that they will run a lot of two tight end sets; jokingly, he said he'd love to run 3 and 4 tight end sets. It will not only facilitate the running game, but the short quick passing game that he also plugged and which was on display in the spring game. Expect to see more QB under center with 3 step drops. I think this offense will do a much better job controlling the ball.
I really don't see why the spread doesn't come out more in heavy sets. Honestly, if you're going to do a -1 yard throw and then run just line up both receivers on the same side of the field and if they bite hard on that send the rb or te the opposite direction. At least if we wanted to run then we could really hammer that ball down their throat.

Nice thread! It gets the juices flowing in the morning. I am so ready for football to begin. More running game would be fine with me. I appreciate that the coaching staff will adjust to the strength of the players available to them this season. I have faith in this coaching staff and I am excited to see the heart in these kids. :thumb:

BW, will you be going to fall camp and tweeting again???... cant wait to watch football again! lets go GRIZ!

Of course! I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else!

Brint:
Better take a little time this year to come by our tailgate for a beverage of your choice. Least I can do for all the quality information you keep everyone abreast of. What is your drink of choice so I can make sure to include it in the truck?

Coyle is listed on the team roster as starting Mike LB. What information do you have otherwise?

If so that's great, I'm a fan of Coyle's - not taking away anything from Stuberg. Brock played really well in Tripp's place in spring ball but I just presumed in the 4-3 the LBs would be JP/Stu/Tripp with Owen/Coyle/Holt rotating in a lot.

Now in the 3-4 I'd expect him to start as an ILB.

BW, time to change the focus to QB battle. It is officially a full out battle now. Good luck too JJ, in what he has to battle now.

Yeah.

Well we've got a good runner in McKinney, a better thrower in Smithwick-Hann, a transfer who I think is Robbie Picazo who is a pocket-style QB, an unknown in Brady Gustafson, and a wild-card in Kemp who could get another shot now.

It's totally up in the air.

I would not be surprised to see 3 or 4 qbs taking 1st and 2nd team repetitions. Camp just very interesting. May the best man win.

As I see it based upon the 3 that I've seen throw, here's what each would need to do to win the starting spot:

Trent McKinney; really needs to show improvement reading through his passing options and his throwing. When I say throwing I'm thinking on two points, medium/longer passing and ball placement in shorter throws. McKinney seemed (at times) to rush things and would throw some knuckle-ball type passes that the WRs were having a hard time pulling in.

Shay Smithwick-Hann; Continued progression in the zone-read, sure he ran it in high school but at this level he doesn't really deceive/fool a lot of defenders. Needs more zip on his pass, throwing arcing rainbow passes 50 yards down field only works a few times per game.

Gerald Kemp; Biggest issue is the short passing game, Kemp can go into Roper-mode and start throwing off his back foot. He over-throws a lot in the short game and his placement of passes is hit and miss. Not sure if it's fair to point it out but durability is a concern as Kemp was banged up for a lot of the 2011 season and then carried it forward with a new injury 1/2 way thru spring ball.

On the other hand, here's what I see each could bring

Trent McKinney; the spring game showed he's got wheels and can run the spread-option well. His biggest foe on the field was himself as he had two long runs where he slipped and fell or else he'd still be running, lol. Trent has a quick release and when he's not forcing throws he operates the hurry up "Fuji" offense pretty well. In terms of IF this team now goes big time run-heavy, might as well have Trent get out there and run that offense. Probably keep his number of passes under 15 - 20 per game.

Shay Smithwick-Hann; Shay is the best passer overall that I've seen. He hits WRs/RBs/TEs in stride on short/quick routes pretty well. Saying he can't run is too blunt of a statement, he has some quick moves and ran the spread offense in HS - so it's not like he's a pocket QB trying to learn the spread system. Shay is also in his 3rd year now on the team, he's familiar with all of his WRs and has to be an emerging team leader. Shay could run this offense like a 2007 Cole Bergquist did - coming into his own, throwing for 220ish per game, less than 30 attempts per game, and running for a 200-300 yards on the season. But obviously relying on the RBs to do the majority of scoring and big playmaking.

Gerald Kemp; This could be Kemp's break, I'm not sure where he stands with the team when he reports but considering the log jam at WR and the need to get the best QB now that JJ is gone - Gerald might just be that guy. Kemp was ahead of SSH and McKinney entering spring ball. We all know he's a tremendous athlete, a fast runner, and pretty good in the zone read. As a senior he could emerge into an on-field leader and hopefully the summer suspension (and hopeful re-instatement) has given him a wakeup and helped his outlook. Also, I still go back to the UNC game, Kemp played pretty darn well in that game, probably some of the best I've seen him play which leads me to think he might be a gamer that sometimes isn't "up" in practice but knows exactly what to do come gametime. Houston Roots was kind of that way last year, he was solid but not great in practice, come game day though he really was the 2nd best playing corner in the Big Sky last year.

BW, I believe you are pretty accurate with your opinions on each QB. Personally, I am pulling for Kemp. I admit it, I am somewhat biased here. If we get a transfer, all this could change.

Who do you see as a frontrunner in the latest twist of "Griz of Our Lives?" My money is on Shay. Even though he is defiantly not as shifty as McKinney, he can run and has surprising quickness. I like his arm strength as well. Seeing that he has had a bunch of time in system, he should be the most up to speed on how qb the Griz. Kemp is a great athlete, but he is damaged goods; I don't see this team rallying with him under center. Shay seems affable, confident, and has a cannon for an arm. Of course all I have to go on are Brint's reports and whatever video I can get on GoGriz.com and YouTube.

If Kemp has been properly humbled by the very public suspension and press and comes to camp hungry I expect he'll be the frontrunner as camp opens.

If not, or if the coaches want to keep him at slot WR, then I'd guess Shay as well.

So is Kemp on or off suspension now?

Not sure if he's off of it but he's going to report for fall camp and i think he'll be practicing pretty soon into fall camp.

Well that clears up a lot :?

I would venture to say that Gerald Kemp has been the most discussed Griz player on this board the past three years running. The discussion has remained much the same. One group thinks he is the best athlete ever at QB and has gotten screwed over by the coaches. They argue he is to talented not to be on the field somewhere. The other group holds the view that he passes the "eyeball" test but all his brains are in his feet and he couldn't throw a beach ball in the ocean if he was standing in it.
I do not know Gerald nor do I know anyone who does. He may be a great guy, a hard worker, etc. but I have to wonder what the coaches know that we don't. I don't buy the coaches are screwing him. They obviously want something from him that he has not produced as of yet and perhaps the consensus on staff is that he won't.
Personally, I am for the QB that gives us the best chance of being successful this season. I don't care who it is either as I will pull for them game in and game out. I trust this staff to make great personnel decisions. Whether Rosenbach turns out to be a great coordinator remains to be seen, but I am absolutely sure he can coach up our current group of quarterbacks despite their lack of experience.
Even with all the program has endured as of late, I predict an excellent season and another deep run in the playoffs. The demise of the Griz as wished for by our Big Sky opponents is just that, wishful thinking.
