#1 Recruit in Nation flips on Florida St to play FCS for Deion

This is all about an HBCU being a great fit for that young man.
And that's awesome.
I honestly think Montana can play better than even a lot of the P5 schools when it comes to marketing for top athletes. I hope Hauck & Co. take a shot at a bunch of 'em.

I can't agree with anything here.

I'd kinda like to see Jackson State participate in the playoffs next year.

Me, too. I don't think they'd get past the first round, but I'd love to see them in it.
If nothing else, their drumline would kick every other band's ass.

I don't expect people to agree with me, but that first line is undeniable because that's what the kid said when he spoke at his press conference. He specifically talked about how HBCUs are a fit more kids should consider.
If you don't think Montana has enough to offer a kid who might consider a P5 school, but who might actually be a better fit attending UM, then I can't help you. But I sure hope Bobby gets the team to a place again where they're playing every week in December so he can say, "Hey, kids, sure you could live in Lincoln and play for a 1-8 team, but UM offers (this degree) and you could live in Missoula and be on ESPN four times in the fall and be a man among boys and still go to the NFL." One out of every so many might just take the shot because it's a better fit. Pipe dream? All I know is you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

First, I ask you to look up the financial package that JSU was able to put together for the kid that is going there because HBCUs are such a great fit. Second, do you think that Bobby doesn't do the things you noted? UM will never be in the same ballpark with NIL resources as a Pac12 school.

Are you suggesting he picked Jackson State for financial reasons? Can you link to that? I'd certainly be surprised JSU out-did FSU in the financial department. Happy to be surprised by that info.
I think we're talking at cross purposes. You're discussing NIL... I don't think EVERY kid is focused on NIL. I don't even think ALL of the top recruits are entirely focused on NIL. Kids focused on NIL are not the ones to target, that's not who I'm talking about here.
Sure, Bobby does the things I noted but I would bet they don't even bother taking a shot at some guys because they have the attitude that "we're not in the same ballpark." So? Never know until you ask. I'm not saying blow the recruiting budge just to ask every 5-star recruit, but I bet every now and then they'd find a kid, and his family who would actually PREFER their son play in a place like UM as opposed to entering the P5 grind and get chewed up and spat out before he's even a full adult. I'm suggesting putting a bit more effort into those potential "yeses" is all.

There are varying reports that Barstool Sports, whom Sanders has a very close relationship with, has stepped up with a very lucrative package for said recruit. As for NIL, of course a majority of players have an interest, it is an opportunity to make some money for playing football.

I've been a resident of Earth for decades, and a fan of sport for just as long, and I had never seen this before right now. I just have to say: Holy Shit. It's the most incredible song/video of all time. Thank you so much for posting it, sincerely.

Bwaaahaaa hahaaaaa!!! Snortle!

Well, maybe since "capitalism" is now involved in college football, maybe it's time for the NFL to start farm teams like baseball, etc. Let the kids who want to compete in the NFL go to a farm team. We could still have genuine college football (w/o the "capitalism") at our colleges, and get this stupid marketing stuff out of college football. Face it: College football is corrupted by "capitalism," which has a rightful place in our economy, otherwise.

I perused Barstool, and there's certainly a lot of FSU fans making a lot of claims. But, Barstool's veracity aside, there's not one verifiable link to a claim and evidence that this kid picked Jackson State for financial reasons. But, hey, maybe it's true. I don't see how that adds up from an HSBC, but if Tom Brady can make a dollar putting college athletes on his sportswear company, than anything is possible.
But my point, which perhaps I made poorly is that I think Montana has A LOT to offer a top recruit with values that are a bit out of the box, as Travis Hunter said his were. And, while I'm disappointed at the immediate jump to "it's impossible, you're nuts-" type of thinking. I remain a person who says, "Why not? What can we do to make it a reality" instead.

I see what you are saying, and in a perfect world it might work. But limitations within the athletics department make it difficult to sink money into the long-shot high-level 4 or 5 star recruit and force you to focus more on 2-3 star guys. Jackson St currently has something to excite some of those 4 and 5 star guys, that schools like Montana don't have, and more than likely will never have, in Sanders.

HBCUs are not FCS They have their own Poll, all american list, national champion.
I would love to see them just jump in 100% to FCS but until they do I don't consider them or IVY to be FCS.
They would get rolled by almost all FCS palyoff teams. (might beat BSC champ sac st)

Uncalled for!

No, they wouldn’t. Unless that means they’d beat UM too.

SAC went toe to toe and played a close game against a Finalist from last Spring who is now at the very least a semifinalist in the Fall. And with a W over Montana St. this weekend they’ll be a finalist again.

You can try to pretend the past 2 games against SAC didn’t happen, but SAC > UM the past 2 full seasons. Prior to that, the Griz own and dominate no question. But to say that Jackson State might be able to beat SAC while omitting UM is either very naive or disingenuous.

It was a joke good lord fellas settle. A little humor at the expense of your team winning one of the top two conferences in FCS and losing in the first playoff game. I would make same joke if was any other BSC team.

Given the circumstances the last couple playoffs I get that they are a little touchy about the subject.......

Probably some truth that the kid may like the atmosphere but there are undoubtedly some benjamins involved. Portnoy and Barstool are hooked up with Draftkings, the online betting outfit engaged in fierce competition for state online sports betting contracts. Portnoy likes to poke a stick in the eye of guys like Roger Goodell so what better way to do the same to a (not so much lately) player in the upper tier of big boy D1 football than by financing a big name prospect going to a small time program with an NIL deal. Right out from under their nose. Throw Deion into the mix and it's a marketing coup by today's standards, evidently worth a mil or more to their show runners.

Would love to see a couple of the teams from the better FCS conferences schedule some OOC games with some SWAC teams. Would love to see Montana schedule a home and home against Jackson St.
That would get College Gameday here!

Not a bad idea, since they would count as D-I opponents. And, while such a game wouldn’t be a guaranteed win, the chances would be pretty good. Going back as far as the 2015 season, current SWAC teams are 20-68 against FCS teams outside the SWAC. I’ll take those odds.

When I was checking records, I was reminded that the Griz hosted Mississippi Valley State back in 2016. It wasn’t pretty: 67-7 Griz. (MVSU ended up with negative rushing yards.)

Well in 2023, both the Griz and Jackson State have September 16th open....sooooooooooo

I guess "Neon" needs a few more of those guys. Right now, South Carolina State out of the MEAC is kicking some SWAC fannie, 31-10. That glittery 11-1 record for Jackson State tells you something about their level of competition ... SC State came in at 6-5 but still looks like the vastly better team, overall.
