The Griz need to pick up it's overall team speed for next year. They have lost a lot of quickness and speed, the last few years and that needs to be addressed. While the Griz may indeed play/start Hasquet at the small forward I still think they need some athleticism and speed at the small forward and guards. The Griz also desperately need to find from within or from recruiting is a solid, dependable three point threat(s)
To be fair the Cats need to continue to upgrade it's talent to the D-1 level. MSU's #1 need for next year is to get another true point to back up or push Durham, and I think we got that with our North Dakota Mr Basketball commit, and a JC big guy to replace Morris, and we got that with Mbunga's commit/signing. Now we need 3-point shooting, much like the Griz.
The Griz desperately need find a 3-point threat? While I think every team would like to improve their 3-point shooting, it's not like the Griz were that bad from the 3 point line. I think they led the league in made 3-pointers and were about middle of the conference in percentage. I know they had at least one really good night behind the arc in Bozeman.
I don't think the Griz are in that bad of shape (3-pt wise) with who they have coming back. Hasquet is an effective 3-point shooter. Rundles showed he can be a threat hitting .478 behind the arc -- 2nd in the conference behind Sir. Martin suffered through a bad shooting slump at the beginning of the season, yet still finished among the league leaders in made 3's and 3 pt percentage. Staudacher was a great shooter in high school hitting over 50%. I think he will develop into a decent 3 point threat. I disagree that the Griz are desperate in that area. However, the Griz desperately need to improve their 3-point defense.
I do agree the Griz need to find an athletic quick recruit at small forward. The Griz need to find somebody who can penetrate and draw fouls. That's something that Mathews and Criswell were reasonably capable of doing. Rundles has shown some flashes, and might develop this ability.
As for Weber St. no one can't discount them after what they did this year. However, Patten will be a pretty big loss. And everybody will be gunning for them next year. I think they kind of surprised a lot of people this year.
And for MSU, I agree about getting another point guard to help Casey. As for the lack of D-I -- how long does Huse get to upgrade the talent level? I mean if Weber coach Randy Rahe can bring in a dozen new players in one year and win the league, how come Huse can't? If he's half the coaching talent that some seem to think -- a lot of Cat fans were saying Huse deserved the coach of the year over Rahe -- shouldn't Huse be able to upgrade the talent at MSU like Rahe did at Weber?
