“Move up” history

A friend and I got to talking about a move up, and he insisted that at one time Montana had a chance to move up but the board of regents would not allow UM to make the jump without MSU. Is this true? Was Montana in fact invited to make the jump to FBS and denied by the board of regents?

Montana was invited to the WAC and explored such a move, determining it didn’t make sense at the time.

There is no requirement from the BOR that both programs move up together, although many feel it would be best.
